Would like to say that I have happily shared my African American connections as I’ve found them in records dating back to 17th-century VA and MD, and 18-19th-c in NC, SC and TN. I hope that it has helped someone find their family too!

I know it has been a year since this was posted, but I would be grateful to know what sources might be available that addresses people from Grainger County TN being in Rockcastle by the first half of the 19th-century? My family seems to had been involved in exploring the area as surveyors chain carriers and with the Donelson Flotilla, etc. Our Payne’s of Grainger were that family who began moving into Rockcastle about the time of their father, the Patriot Isaac Payne, died in 1827 in Grainger TN. The had inter-married or closely associated with the Rucker, Coffey, Hayes, Donelson clans- which coincidentally suggests this Payne family was part of the better known Paynes of Virginia- where all of their kin above are known to have lived. Yet we have reason to believe these Paynes had originally come from the Maryland/Pennsylvania/Delaware border area just prior to (and likely result of) the coming Revolutionary War. I have confirmed the Maryland Regiment they had been attached to was transferred to the Southern Command. Evidently first in Virginia and later at Orange County, NC. Other clues seem to be an association with the spread of the Baptist faith in these areas. History is fascinating!

My Grandfather, Calvin Ezra Queen was a member of Red Men. My grandfather said you had to be a descendant of the Boston Tea Party... that's all I know.
