This is great, but it's not quite the right procedure. The procedure is Open Cover -> press Back/Cancel together -> Then press Back by itself. The reason the video says you have to try several times is that you're basically trying until you accidentally do it correctly. Surprisingly, resetting got several extra months out of my Black cartridge and I just now reset my color cartridges. It makes me wonder if there really is any actual difference between the Standard, High Capacity, and Ultra High Capacity toner cartridges from Brother or if they are actually the same exact cartridge running down the same exact production line receiving the same exact amount of toner -- and only programmed to tell you they are empty sooner. I seriously got MONTHS extra out of my Black cartridge doing this trick. We'll see how much extra time I get on the color ones now!

Thanks so much for this video! I just bought this printer today and was on the phone with Brother to ask them a bunch of questions and this was one since I had a previous Brother printer and KNEW the low toner light would keep popping up. Since I just got it today, I have not tried it but I will. And a couple in the comments said that you only need to press the back arrow IMMEDIATELY after pressing both back arrow and the X and the toner menu pops up immediately. THANKS to you and those who gave the additional comments.

Yes, you open the lid, then press both buttons (return and cancel) at the same time, release both, and then quickly just press return button. Regards.

You have to press the red x and back arrow buttons together then quickly press the back arrow after by itself to get to the menu..

It worked! Thank you so much! I also had to do it probably around a dozen or more times - then I closed the door and opened it again, and after one or two more tries, it brought up the reset menu. It saved me the hassle of a call to Brother support! I'm letting my toner supplier know about this video, as they were unable to help me solve the problem over the phone. Thank you again!

Thank you so much for this video! I am also glad that you and others warned me that it could take several tries to bring the menu up. It ended up taking me about 40 tries, but it worked! It is very annoying that Brother printers tell you your toner cartridge is empty when it clearly is not and is printing just fine! This video saved me money by not having to buy a new ink cartridge!

It’s a good guide just a tip for anyone who does it make sure to remove the toner cartridges first and look at the roller on them and make sure it’s in good condition. If it’s starting to wear out and you reset the toner levels you risk the cartridge leaking toner. It happened to me once and it was a pain to clean it.

I just wanna add that the cover must be completely open all the way down , if not, it doesn't work , I tried the procedure 30 or 40 times before of realizing that, the cover was open but not completely so the procedure didn't work until I opened it completely, thanks for your information friend it was really helfpul

Thank you. My Magenta needed replacement and the replacement showed empty. So I got another replacement and it showed empty too. This reset worked and both new cartridges are fine. YOU ROCK!

Confirmed this just worked perfectly. Bought some aftermarket toner cartridges. All worked perfectly but for some reason one wasn't reseting the ink level to full. Did this. Worked after 1 or 2 clicks. Up and running. Awesome!

After the "back and cancel" buttons you have to press "back" alone to get into the reset-menu. so the procedure is: - press "back & cancel" at the same time - release both buttons - press "back" alone - release button ... voila ;-)

Thank you @Beauchamp François for the helpful hint. I am using latest firmware ZC 1.27 on my brother L8900 CDW. It was not working for me as well even after 10+ tries. Couple of things helped me Leave the cover open and also PULL OUT the drum a bit We always need to press the "return" and "X" button simultaneously when the "Close the cover" menu is shown. Thus, I followed the steps below when the drum unit is pulled out 1. Press "Return" and "X" simultaneously when "Close the cover" is shown 2. Immediately press "Return" with-in a second 3. Press the "Cover is open" yellow sign top left of the LCD screen Repeat these 3 steps until you get the toner reset menu, and then proceed happily. I got the reset toner menu in 4th attempt.

I bought my brother printer in August of 2018. It came with the starter set of toner cartridges. I'm still using that set of cartridges and have used this trick twice to reset the cartridges. I'm beginning to think the starter set contains the full amount of toner but his program to shut down prematurely. I have a set of full-sized cartridges in the closet which I haven't touched yet.

Corrected Method: Computer cannot be sending print job to printer, and printer must not be in "Receiving Data" mode to reset toner. My notebook was sending large print job when Yellow signaled "out of toner". Notebook was still sending more pages, and printer was still trying to receive pages. Dozens of attempts to reset failed. To dolve reset problem, I shut my notebook off so it couldn't send print job to printer. Printer still showed it was trying to receive print job. I pulled power plug from printer, waited 30 seconds, then plugged printer back in. On startup, printer was no longer trying to "receive data", but Yellow toner was still out. Then I followed the procedure here, worked first time.

Thank you for this video you seriously saved my ass today. I changed the yellow cartridge before it was empty and the copier refused to recognize the new cartridge and wouldnt print from our computer or make color copies, it would make black copies at least though. Having a tattoo shop without a printer or copy machine is basically death, you saved my ass.

For anyone that is still having issues. This is the exact procedure to do these without the endless button pressing. Brother TN 443 Toner Cartridge Reset - HL-L8260CDN, HL-L8360CDW, MFC-L8690CDW, MFC-L8900CDW When installing a new toner cartridge in any of the following printers: HL L8260CDN, HL L8360CDW, MFC L8690CDW, MFC L8900CDW and it isn't recognized by the printer please follow the steps provided below to reset Individual toner cartridges. 1. Open the front cover. 2. Press the [Back] key and [Stop] key at the same time, then press the [Back] key again within 2 seconds. 3. Press the key of the toner cartridge for which the counter is to be reset. K = Black C = Cyan M = Magenta Y = Yellow 4. Press the [Yes] key. 5. Close the front cover and it should now have been reset correctly. Note: The above process will reset toner cartridges in any of the following printers: Brother HL: HL-L8260CDN, HL-L8360CDW Brother MFC: MFC-L8690CDW, MFC-L8900CDW

I tried 200 times or so, if not more. Everytime I pushed both buttons I had to close the front cover and reopen it because it took me out of the ¨Close the cover" menu. To save time, leave the cover open and when back to the main menu press the Cover is open yellow sign top left of the LCD screen. The X and return button trick DOES NOT work from the main menu, you need the ¨Closer the cover" message to be on the LCD screen. I tried about 4-5 times and then it worked. I reseted all cartridges of the same color not knowing which I used (it's not written on my ink) and it now works just fine. Thanks for the heads up Vtech.

Have you observed that toner level suddenly drops from 4/5 to 1/10 suddenly? I printed about 450 pages of manuals which took it from full to 4/5 full. I've only printed a page or two a day for the past month, but now suddenly all toners but black are showing 1/10 and 'toner low' messages. Why is the toner gauge so non linear?

I know I haven't used much color at all, and sometimes prints are going through with color settings, but there is no color on the document, but it seems that Brother has assumed some average amount of toner used per print. It's ridiculous to have to buy $500 worth of new cartridges when they are still full!

The reason I gave 4 stars for tech support (which I don't think this would classify as tech support) is because once you turn the printer on, it does require a little bit of start up time which may bother some who are in a hurry to quickly print something. To offset that though the printer prints very quickly. I would definitely purchase this printer again.

Incorrect!!! You should hit the cancel and return button for about 1 second and then hit the return button again. It should open immediately. The reason why it took so many tries was because he had to get lucky to hit the correct combination. Try it, you will see!!!

the Brother MFC L8690 CDW is the European model - the MFC L8900 CDW the America model . Both are absolute garbage. Brother makes the worse most unreliable copiers ... I bought by MFC 8900- for $780 had nothing but trouble and malfunctioning . It finally stopped working six months after the fact. Brother....: poor customer service, garbage products.
