One thing I really related admired about OG Leon was his ability to make jokes in the face of death. I didn't have social media at that time (thankfully) so my views on him were not influenced by anything and were my own. I compared Leon as a MC to the MCs of previous games I played like Prince of Persia and God of War. One has the power to control time and the other is a fucking god. Unlike them, Leon was a normal human being but the enemies he had to fight were not. One of the aspects I find most appealing about his character is his ability to maintain a sense of humor and crack jokes, even when faced with the most gruesome and monstrous creatures. It's almost surreal to witness a normal human being like Leon boldly stand his ground and use witty remarks in the face of these merciless monsters who are clearly bent on domination and fear. Leon's quick wit send a powerful message - that he refuses to be cowed by the horrors that surround him. It's as if he's asserting his own strength and resilience in the face of adversity, letting these creatures know that he won't be easily intimidated. This aspect of his character is not just admirable, but it also adds a layer of complexity to his persona. By responding to terror with humor, Leon seems to be not only defying the monsters, but also coping with the surreal and nightmarish situation he's thrust into. In a way, Leon's humorous demeanor becomes a coping mechanism, a way for him to retain his sanity amidst the chaos. It's as if he's telling both himself and the monsters that he won't let fear dictate his actions. This unique trait not only showcases his mental fortitude, but also highlights his ability to find a glimmer of humanity and light even in the darkest of situations. I fucking love Leon's skill for cracking jokes in the face of death. It really shows off his resilience, determination, and strength of character, making him an absolute badass

I think the remake's combat works on standard difficulty, but hardcore and professional were unbalanced to entice players to buy tickets. Professional mode objectively is not a good time without bonus, skips, or cheats. I cannot understand why in a game that is about precision aiming they removed the laser sight on all weapons to make the weapons more imprecise. Imagine if Dead Space removed the lasers, gave the weapons a ridiculous amount of spread, doubled the movement of the enemies, and then expected you to make precision attacks. You could tough your way through it but you wouldn't be enjoying it.
@thatoneguy1232

Hardcore is really fair if you’re good at the game. You know like good at aiming, making your shots counts, picking your spots wisely, avoid getting surrounded and cornered. And by the time you reach near the end of the castle, you should have most of your weapons fully upgraded. For me, I had my hand gun(SG, my favorite), shotgun(Riot Gun), and Combat Knife all fully upgraded around the mines section(Krauser was a cakewalk with my maxed knife). Reaching the island, I get my Stingray maxed out. Ammo was never an issue and I mostly kill everything on sight with a few exceptions like the opening village fight and occasionally I’ll run by the fish farm arena(can go back to collected everything later after Del Lago enemy free). I even kill Verdugo every time just because and I don’t even use magnums. I’m fairly conservative with my shotgun ammo and very liberal with handgun ammo. I only craft flash bangs and occasionally heavy grenades later in the game. Hardcore is a fun challenge I will agree that professional is pretty rough and I only played it for 100% completion. Nothing wrong with balancing the game’s weapons. We are are free to choose how we want to play. We’ve got the good ol classic all-rounder Silver Ghost which is very precise, compatible with the laser sight, amazing at crits. The Punisher is a bit weaker but has great penetration and while I personally dismissed it at first, it certainly still has its advantages and place. The Red9 is wildly inaccurate and pretty slow but in turn packs a hefty punch. Blacktail is also powerfully and pretty fast. The Matilda is basically an smg with its stock. You get to choose your style and I find nothing wrong with that. Why would you want every gun to pretty much be the exact same? Why even bother with other weapons if they all could use the same attachments? I like what each piece offers. Enemies are smarter and more aggressive and efficient. Why is that a bad thing? The player also has increased mobility. Positioning, timing, aiming. Name of the game since day one.
@AngryCosmonaut

@@thatoneguy1232The problem with the higher difficulties is that they readily expose the flaws in the combat system, which is the the opposite in the OG in which PRO showcased how tightly tuned the combat system was. If I'm nailing headshots and limb shots there should be feedback from enemies. I shouldn't have to shoot an enemy 5 times in the face or limb before they stagger or drop their weapon. At that point why not just remove stagger from the game entirely? I'll take some limited mobility over mediocre, inaccurate weapons every time.
@thatoneguy1232

@@AngryCosmonaut I never had an issue with hitting staggers. It’s not 100% guaranteed, which is fine imo(wouldn’t want the game to be too easy like the og), but more often than not, I hit them. And I have two main handguns. For challenge runs I use the Red9 which gets staggers less but still just kills the enemy outright. On regular playthroughs I use the starting SG and I guess the laser sight helps with staggers and crits. And again, by the castle my handgun is nearly or fully maxed out. For Separate Way things are a bit tougher for me. The Blacktail I don’t get as many staggers but Ada also comes with a tmp so I guess that’s not a big issue even though I personally don’t like smgs.

You know, other than the sections where you were separated from her I never had much difficulty keeping her safe. The game only tells you this once, but tight formation is for evading enemies while running away. If you use it in combat she's gonna catch a lot of collateral from all the attacks coming at you. Loose formation is best for combat, then use a little situational awareness. She usually backs away from you, so if you're facing the bad guys she'll stay behind and you form the line of defense. TBH I feel like trying to claim either game is better than the other is kind of missing the point, at least from my experience. There seems to be a trend of RE players thinking that remakes have to "replace" the original just because the first game had that lightning in a bottle of a remake that did so. The RE Engine series has never quite been that sort of series for me, moreso a sort of modern "remix" of the originals, especially prevalent when you start in different places and travel the map differently in RE4R. That doesn't excuse every choice they've made, RE3R is still getting hell, but you can see in a lot of cases how they wanted to adapt the story rather than just do it all again. RE4's a different case because I not only got to play the original last year, but others are also able to do so. RE4 Classic is a widely available game, meaning that the importance in comparison doesn't feel as strong of a need like RE2 and 3 does. I have to emulate those games because the originals aren't available on my platforms. RE4 is just ... there. After playing RE4R I straight up went back to the original just to get the different vibe. Both games are great and they both deserve love to this day.

RE4R is not available on Xbox One, I don't entirely blame them but just figured I'd add that. You can play the OG Trilogy on PC using source ports, the OG PC ports are abandonware at this point and run on the most potato of potatoes. I keep them on my flashdrive, all I need to do is plug in my flashdrive and they play on any computer without a need to do any installation. I should add I own the OG trilogy physical PC copies, before anyone calls me a pirate. I'm really hoping they do a solid Code Veronica remake next, RE5 still plays very well as far as I am concerned. If they do RE5 remake, I really hope it doesn't land until the next console generation at earliest, otherwise RE5 is still in great shape imo. To be completely honest I'd be much more interested in an RE0 and RE1 refresh before RE5. I don't think it needs a complete remake, but if they do, it would be cool to allow them to play with both fixed camera angles, and in 1st/3rd person. If you could switch between that, it would be really cool. If it is fixed camera angles, they can use pre rendered graphics, I really hope it looks photo realistic and has maximum brutality.

I my be alone in thinking this but after code Veronica Resident Evil hasn't been Resident Evil. All recent offerings feel like expanded RE: Revelations tales. Take me back to when it was a pharmaceutical company trying to make human bioweapons instead of focusing on abstract origins of fungi, mold, parasites & flowers... All that did was add paranormal elements to something that was already terrifying with the knowledge human experiments actually exist. The series itself is a dog's hair away from being set in the Silent Hill or Parasite Eve universe at this point with Re8/Village.

The remake is fine but it really serves to highlight the expertise that went into balancing and polishing the first game. As Nerrel pointed out in his review, the group battles especially highlight the gap in design between the two. If anything, the remake has made me appreciate the original more. A lot of small design details went unappreciated by me until they changed to “modernize” or “improve” the game.

removing the ability to shoot Luis for a bad ending during house defense was such a baffling choice to me. like I know it's not something most would do on purpose, but it was literally just a choice the player could make which had a built in proper response. it was showing that RE4 was very responsive to player actions (even in how its difficulty would dynamically increase or decrease depending on how well you were playing).

It takes me forever to beat the original because of that. I have to stop to shoot, then run backwards when the enemy gets too close to avoid getting hit since there is no parry system. I have to shoot, run back, shoot run back, shoot run forward, and on an on when there is a horde of enemies. The whole thing takes a long time and is very tedious. Also, Leon was trained by Krauser to use the knife, but in the og he never uses it to defend himself. That's the unfortunate thing about the original.

The reason I prefer Remake 2 was because it was a much slower paced game, and it was survival horror. I love re 4 OG and when I went into remake 4, I understood what I should be expecting. The problem however was that remake 4 from a mechanical standpoint is similar to remake 2, but has action elements added to it. This doesnt really work though on higher difficulties. Especially how there is an RNG on the shots placed on the heads or the sensitive spots, shall we say. With remake 2, even if there was cut content, it still however met my expectations when I played it.

But a remake THIS good is always welcome, unlike TLOU (and maybe RE3 remake). I was totally fine with most changes, and things that were cut weren't really as important (lava room, lasers, etc.). The biggest issue with Ashley is the fact that loose formation is just completely useless. It is never a good option and Ashley still gets in the way sometimes even acting like a ganado bodyguard, taking hits for them. In the og game Ashley was like an obedient dog, I dont know why people hated so much dealing with her back then and I honestly blame them for the way Ashley acts in the remake cause this is definitely the result of player feedback otherwise chances are we would still have "wait" and "follow me"
@thatoneguy1232

If Ashley gets in the way, it’s your fault. If she’s in your way then odds are you told her to back up in front of you. Tell her to come in and she will not always rush towards you and even do so while crouching if you’re aiming. That’s when you have her back up to avoid getting if enemies are close or have ranged options. She will listen to what you want her to do. If you don’t want to deal with enemies then keeping her close is the way to go but you still gotta create somewhat of a path for her. If a Ganado is in your way, they’re likely going to be in hers as well.
