Nick, i want to transmit my gratitude for your tutorials. As a man who self diagnosed his sleep apnoea and was given a Phillips dream star C-plus it changed my life and gave me a new lease of life and some really good sleep for the last 10 years. Let me share a story, one week ago my latest Phillips Dream star went into Service required mode so i packed it up and went to my local C.P.,A.P store where i was informed that my machine was had had a world wide recall and was not being made anymore. They informed me that the foam disintegrated and could possible lead to cancer. How surprised i was to hear this as i was happy and still using this machine and was not aware of the recall and was while my Phillips was off getting serviced was going to purchase another one so i always has a spare. So long story short, i am now the proud owner of a Resmed 10 Auto. Found your channel and watched your tutorials on the ResMed 10. Your approach is gentle, informative and above all extremely helpful. With your help via KZitem, i have set the Resmed up to suit my sleep patterns and have had some of the best sleep of my life. God bless for sharing your knowledge as i certainly appreciate it.

@@CPAPReviews Hi Nick. Me again doing a piggyback. I have looked at Oximeters to buy a recordable one. All of them have a disclaimer saying that they are not a medical device and the device has a reading accuracy of + or minus 2%. They also stated that that the only real accurate oxygen saturation that can be trusted is one taken from arterial blood gas (ABG) test. It is an invasive and painful test. The possibility of sleeping through this test is IMPOSSIBLE. This means that any oximeter can only give you a reading within 4% of the real oxygen saturation. This is a hypothetical situation. I get an oxygen saturation level of 95% from my finger pulse oximeter. ( This is an acceptable level for a 70 year old.) However this reading could be 97% or 93% based on the accuracy being + or - 2%. Some of these oximeters have a plus or minus accuracy of 4%, so that could be 91 0r 99%. I have seen that anything under 95% is an abnormal reading. This leaves every person with a conundrum. Do you think positively and accept that the reading is 97% or negatively and think it is 93% and an abnormal reading. One of your subscribers posted that he did not care what his ahis were as long as his O2 was above 90%. Your reply was "Spot on mate". However, 90% oxygen saturation is very close to needing supplemental oxygen. I would just say Nick, if you don"t know, don"t comment. Your comment should have been " I recommend you talk to your sleep tech or doctor and find out what reality is". Love your stuff 99% of the time but you are at fault here. We are all human and make mistakes. Wish I could have made this comment offline because I do not want to stop your brilliant work.

Sounds good in theory Trevor, but best not to continuously mix new water with old water and leave it sitting in the humidifier for long periods. It's a good opportunity to rinse out the tank and let it dry before you use it again. This will reduce the risk of bacterial growth.

@@af1966 - I had this problem too, by adjusting the climate level and the tube temp in combination, it's possible to make the water last longer while still not getting a dry mouth. For me, mouth leaks are the main cause of dry throat and mouth. A good seal on the mouth tape and a chin strap has helped in my case and saves on the water usage. Even a small leak from the edge of the tape sometimes affects the dryness of my mouth.

Great video, Nick. Quick question. I'm a bit confused by the values shown when I set the Period to 1 day. Is this last night or the night before? I ask because the AHI value shown on 1 day report typically is not the same number as what is shown in EVENTS for the ssme report. I trust I have explained the issue clearly. Hey man im really having problems with support on my new AirSense 10, ive been using it for 6 months now with no change to the way i feel, like im dying honestly with really bad palpitations, but the last 3 months ive had a really persistent cough develop and this kind of cold soreness in my nose, i also get this very pungent weird odour when i breathe in through my nose or mouth like i can taste and smell something, reminds me of a chemical crossed with smoke, any thoughts as its worrying me and my NHS providers say it should not cause these symptoms, i have an appointment again end of April with ENT but its so far away.

Hey mate, sorry to hear that but unfortunately this is beyond my pay grade and i would speak with a specialist about it. If it was me personally i would stop using the machine for a while to see if those symptoms cleared up, then would start again to see if they reappeared. If they did, i would reduce my therapy pressure levels and try different levels of humidification to see if that helped or changed anything but once again, beyond my expertise. Cheers

Great video Mate! Dropping the max pressure just above the “pressure” number has been a huge help! Great info Nick, it’s been a huge help. I’ve been struggling with mask leaks, dry nose and throat and painful bloating due to swallowing air, and waking up multiple times a night. I suspected my pressure was set too high, so using your info I gradually dialled back the upper pressure level, and keeping an eye on the AHI I found the best pressure has come down to 8. No more painful bloating, no more mask leaks, dry mouth etc and my AHI is 3 and I’m averaging 1.5 events per hour most nights instead of 8-9 or more.

Just wanted to add my thanks. Recently had a sleep study (1st June 22) after my son stated I was snoring loudly and sounding like I was gasping for breath. Finally got the report via the GP yesterday - (1st July 22) Severe OSA. Booked to see a technician on Tuesday to hopefully buy a CPAP myself. I came across your channel after researching the RESMED 10 after a recommendation from a mate who used to sell a competing product (so definitely no brand bias). You've been clear and logical and reinforced my decision. I'm a nurse who worked in ICU up until recently, (now ED) and we played with CPAP to get an understanding of how it feels for patients. I'm hoping it clears this fog of tiredness, which hopefully will mean more energy to exercise which will hopefully lead to weight loss. The biggest issue I always saw was people (in ICU) jamming the masking on too tight, to get no leaks, which lead to pressure sores and the next worse thing was ramping the pressure up too fast. (Granted this was for pulmonary oedema treatment so not quite the same use - but the therapy is the same) Thanks for this series. My only worry (being single) is how it will work dating, if and when that ever happens again.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I feel like I am suffocating when I first put my mask on. I’ve called the company several times where I got my machine from and the keep telling me there is nothing wrong. I have been going through this since 2020. I started out using the full mask for about 3 months. Didn’t like it. So I tried the pillows and found them a lot more comfortable. When I first put my mask on I have to breathe through my mouth to get enough air. Now I am excited to go home to change the settings myself to see if that works.

I have a problem that no one seems to understand or be able to help with. You seem so knowledgeable that I am hoping you can help. I wake up during the night with my mouth and throat completely dried out. It's so bad my tongue is stuck to the roof of my mouth & soft pallet, and it is actually painful to get it unstuck. There is still plenty of water in the tank. My mouth is not coming open. I know because I have taped my mouth shut completely, and it still happens. I have AirSense 10, heated hose & N20 nasal mask. Normally, the mask always has a bit of water in it. When I wake up with dry mouth and throat, the mask is also bone dry. When I wake up this way, it gives me heartburn and upsets my stomach. Why does this happen? It is so sporadic, it makes no sense. If you can shine any light on this situation, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm to the point where I hate to even go to sleep.

I will adjust my mask and tighten it a bit more. I then find myself struggling to breathe in and out at that pressure. I will turn my machine off and let it start low again as I fall asleep. I will then suddenly wake to a high pressure struggling to breathe. I am currently using a F20 mask with an anti-leak band accessory. Does changing the max pressure put you out of compliance? I'm a truck driver (in the US) so I REALLY need to know. But great video! Mine just came in the mail today, so this will be my first night with a CPAP. Sleep study said I had over 25 events per hour.

@@screamtoasigh9984 mine wasn't mandated through a dot physical. I did it on my own bc of sleep trouble. But I was referring to the pressure being too high. But I lowered it from a max of 20 down to about 11 or 12. Nobody said anything. But I love it! Can't sleep without it now. I just slept for about 14 hours. Had it on the whole time

Great stuff, thanks! Coming from a Respironics DreamStation 1, I find the Standard response setting on the Airsense 10 to be so much more gentle than the DreamStation already, I can’t quite imagine how the Soft response would be

Thank you so much for this. I was fortunate to be given a brand new Airsense 10 for free from a family member and I was told by the technician at my pulmonologists office to just keep it on autoset, but all this information regarding minimum/max pressure was never explained to me. This really helps. Also, my set did not come with a tube that has the heating chip connector. Is this crucial for it to work? I haven’t used the device yet and not sure if breathing in just cool air is ok until the heating tube I orders arrives in the mail..

Hello, great video!! I’m 21 and was diagnosed with sleep apnea but I’ve been having trouble getting used to my cpap machine. I don’t have a lot of trouble falling asleep with it on but every night I take it off around the two hour mark (almost like clockwork). I don’t realize that I’m taking it off, I just seem to do it in my sleep. It has been very frustrating! It’s also very strange that it happens almost exactly two hours after falling asleep. I tried putting rubber bands around the area that clips on so I wouldn’t be able to take it off in my sleep and I ended up waking up at the two hour mark feeling like I was suffocating and really uncomfortable. I’m not sure if it’s something wrong with me or the machine…any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Catalina, often people can feel like they're suffocating for two reasons. 1. There's not enough airflow / pressure and they feel like they're sucking through a straw or 2. Too much pressure which is making it harder for them to exhale. I recommend switching the mode of your cpap from AUTOMATIC to CPAP, fixed to one set pressure that you're comfortable with. In the beginning, don't worry too much if it's an adequate pressure, just start with a pressure that's comfortable and get use to sleeping 4+ hours. Once you find a pressure that's comfortable, you can check out your data on www.sleephq.com to see if perhaps you need to adjust those setting higher. I've done a bunch of vids on sleephq so check them out. I hope this helps my friend. Good luck. Nicko

I will never go back to the sleep clinic about 25 miles from me. The night they did my pressure test, they gave me a nasal mask and no chin strap. I was blowing air out of my mouth all night, they set the Pressure to 13.5 and I had to wear my mask so tight, it left marks on face until about 5 PM the next day. I have not used my CPAP machine in over 2 years, I say Screw them!

If my CPAP machine has reduced my sleep stoppages to almost nothing, why am I still waking up with my head uncomfortably filled with sand/snow/cotton? Is this simply a process by which my brain is getting used to the machine, it taking time for the machine to repair my brain from five years of apnea, or indicative of another brain abnormality apart from the apnea?
@sportshistorybuff319

Thanks. Is this meter something that plugs in separately from the CPAP, or is somehow connected to it? Do you mean there is such a thing as the mask not leaking enough?

It is so great to actually now understand how it all works. All I need to do now is find your Video on how to clean the machine the way it should be done. I would like to say thank you once again. Keep up the good work & Videos. Kind regards, Lynnette.

Thanks NIck, very clear explanations. I find that my 95% pressure is 12. I don't set my upper limit at 20 but I do set it at 13 not 12 because on Oscar I find that at times (5% of the time) I can go as high as 13. If it has to send a pulse of pressure to 13 it might have a better time of actually clearing the apnea and 13 isn't that much higher than the average.
