Spent time asking swimmers at Olympic trials which non swimming exercises helps them the most. Many of them, especially the sprinters, said cleans. They also happened to be high on the podium as well. There were also some high finishers that said burpees so there’s that 😂

I’ll take a more direct jab at some of the coaches that are very anti-oly lifts that also tend to not really push strength numbers on other exercises (squats, deads, presses etc) in their athletes - none of them are ever really all that strong or muscular themselves lol I kinda feel like they shift their training to emphasize speed, agility, and plyo work mostly bc they aren’t that experienced in long term progression of lifting and will actively vilify heavy lifting in some way to build their own brand that preys on athletes/clients who want to be validated that they don’t need to lift heavy to improve their athleticism. That all being said heavy is a relative term and I’m not saying a 130 lbs female volleyball player needs to pursue a 350 lbs back squat but I’m generally in agreement with you that becoming stronger in the weight room is an important element of fitness for everyone and shouldn’t be neglected. And telling people that there’s no benefit to getting much stronger or worse yet telling them that it will be a detriment to their athleticism is just untrue and potentially harmful

I don't think the coaches are 'anti-olympic lifts', it's just you can get the same training effect doing exercises that are easier to learn and perform with better recovery and hypertrophy potential. With dynamic effort squats, benches, and deadlifts with bands combined with heavy dead stop reps you get basically everything you would get from olympic lifts while being easier to learn, perform, as well as getting hypertrophy out of it.

I don't think its just the olympic lifts, I think its any exercise that takes longer than a week or two of practice to learn how to do. There are a bunch of other exercises that take similar levels of skill to perform, and you also rarely see them being done. It started to freak me out once I noticed it. I get not teaching some exercises to some athletes for time/efficiency purposes, but I would still expect coaches to know how to do a bunch of medium to high skill exercises. A lot of these people, you watch them lift, and you realize they can't move around very well.

Olympic lifts improve the efficiency of the entire range of athletic movement. I attribute them to still being able to play rugby, relatively injury free, at 44.... Well, that and spending 30-40 minutes a day with mobility. It's cool to interact with the Strongest Strength Coach on the Planet.

Yeah I don't think cleans and snatches are essential for athleticism, but come on, it's clear these exercises are the best barbell moves for increasing explosiveness and are probably the most athletic barbell movements (just from how much they ask of your body compared to other lifts)
@tv26889

They're not, dynamic effort squats, benches, and deadlifts with bands combined with heavy dead stop reps are better overall.

@tv26889 The cleans and snatches show the highest recruitment of fast twitch fibers. Intuitively, they combine the deadlift, squat, jumping, and throwing together. Dynamic effort was born from weightlifting for a reason, not the reverse. There is a reason weightlifting and not powerlifting are the barbell sport of track and field and the Olympics
@tv26889

@@cheapR1 I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree. I don't think the training effect you get from cleans and snatches can't basically be replicated by banded lifts and dead stop training. You have to recruit motor units fast enough to outpace the band tension and not get buried with the weight. You actually get hypertrophy out of those as well. Having muscle improves athleticism.
@cheapR1

@tv26889 cleans and snatches will at 70% and higher always recruit more muscle. They will teach your body how to go from 0 to 100 better than any other barbell movements. Because of the jumping and throwing aspect, they resemble sports activity the most

@@tv26889 Dynamic effort SBD does not do much at all to improve athleticism. It is just a tool to get stronger or using it to stay strong. Most people using conjugate have figured out that you have to use heavier weights than typically prescribed in order to get stronger with it in essence it just becomes a volume day. You can not just SBD and become "athletic" you have to do "athletic things". Olympic lifting variants is one of those things.

I legitimately can't understand the logic of "it's too hard". These are athletes (i.e. Supposed to be coordinated), if they can't learn how to do a clean, they're in trouble. I'm not an athlete, not super coordinated (not uncoordinated either), and it really didn't take long to put together respectable technique in the o-lifts.

Any thoughts on Kettlebell lifting? I’m 40 and I’m making the switch to kettlebells from weightlifting. There’s 2 different methodologies: _Hardstyle_ and _Soft Style._
@aegypiusmonachus

I think kettlebells are good as a sport/activity on its own. But as a tool to develop strength and power they're inferior to barbell lifts, some wrestlers and martial artists use kettlebells in their training tho (still, I'd say most of the exercices where they use kettlebells could be swapped by barbells with no problems).This is only my opinion tho and I'm not a coach.
