What does fundamentalist mean to you?
@toddstevens9667
9 ай бұрын
I suppose I could define it by reference to the 12-volume collection of essays entitled “The Fundamentals” published in the early 20th century in America. I probably believe pretty much exactly what you thought when you read the word. But I have enjoyed each of these videos by Dan. I disagree with some of them of course. But they are always challenging. Probably one of my biggest issues with them is the constant refrain that the majority of scholars believe this or that. We all know that’s quite the oversimplification. What he means is: the majority of critical scholars believe this or that … not the majority of all biblical scholars. And we all understand that the consensus was considerably different, say, 50 years ago than it is today. And, likewise, it will be different 50 years from now. As an academic myself, I understand that scholars have agendas just like everyone else. Dan and Bart have a particular agenda. Simon Gathercole and Michael F. Bird have a different agenda. But all of them bring valuable insights for understanding the Bible and what it means for us today.

A lot of it is mixing common nonsense theories from conspiracy-minded atheist circles or evangelical Protestant circles: Both are trying to undermine the Catholic Church, they're just coming at it from opposite ends. The evangelicals are trying to dismiss expressly Catholic concepts like transubstantiation or the veneration of Mary as pagan in origin. The atheists, meanwhile, are trying to dismiss all Christianity as pagan in origin or at least deceptive about its "true" origin and Catholicism, being the root of most forms of Christianity practiced in the West today, is a handy target, especially foundational events like the Council of Nicaea. (Full disclosure: I am a lapsed Catholic and an atheist, but my background is in history and philosophy and I don't stand for ahistorical nonsense no matter how much it supports my worldview.)

According to the Gospel accoring to Biff, the H in Jesus H Christ is Hallowed: "Our Father, who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name". There really is a Gospel according to Biff. I recommend it highly. It is a historical document in the Galaxyquest sense. I learned many new things from it. For example, were you aware that because Jesus was a pacifist, the non-striking form of unarmed combat he invented during his time in Japan was called "The way of the Jew", or "Jew-do", or more recently "judo"? @Dan McClellan The whole 'cretin' thing is a bizarre bit of nonsense I've encountered baffling on a few other occasions. It seems to be a simple matter of confusion between the words for 'cretin' and 'Christian' in French; 'crétin' and 'chrétien,' which are superficially similar and readily mistaken for one another. This could also have arisen from French secular and skeptic wordplay that was erroneously taken for a serious mark of disrepute flung at Christians as overt criticism, when it was anything but.
