The Victorian hymn "Rest of the weary, joy of the sad", to the tune "Theodora" by Alfred Legge (1843-1919), played by Peter Tylor on the 1909 Hele pipe organ at St Mewan Church near St Austell, Cornwall (NPOR D08358), 19/01/2020.
Rest of the weary, joy of the sad;
Hope of the dreary, light of the glad;
Home of the stranger, strength to the end;
Refuge from danger, Saviour and Friend.
Pillow where, lying, love rests its head;
Peace of the dying, life of the dead;
Path of the lowly, prize at the end;
Breath of the holy, Saviour and Friend.
When my feet stumble, to Thee I’ll cry,
Crown of the humble, cross of the high;
When my steps wander, over me bend,
Truer and fonder, Saviour and Friend.
Ever confessing Thee, I will raise
Unto Thee blessing, glory, and praise;
All my endeavour, world without end,
Thine to be ever, Saviour and Friend. Amen.
(Words by John Samuel Bewley Monsell, 1811-1875)
This beautiful but neglected hymn appears - most often to this tune - in a large number of late 19th and early 20th century British hymnals. It is interesting to note that the reference to Christ as being both path (Psalm 16:11) and prize (Philippians 3:14) occurs also in what is probably the best known hymn from the pen of the same author: "Fight the good fight".
