I buy buttermilk and use an ice-cube tray to freeze it in batches. I then put the cubes in a labeled ziplock bag and I can pull out what I need for a recipe. It only takes a little while to defrost and it works great. It does lose some of the thick consistency, but has good flavor.

Jess, just my experience for what it's worth, store bought buttermilk (the higher fat content variety) lasts me MORE than 6 months in the frig... I don't pay much attention to some expiration dates and buttermilk is one of those. The nose knows when it turns sour. that said, I am very careful not to introduce any possible contaminants from my hands or any utensils to the container and the lid. YMMV but I am sure your nose will know just like mine..

I use almost this exact same recipe, varying from all fresh to all dried herbs (or some mix of both) depending on the season. But I really like garlic (and onion) so I usually substitute 1-2 cloves of freshly grated or finely minced garlic instead of the powder (and also include the onion powder, plus a pinch of cayenne, too). I also made a ready-made spice mix (all dried herbs and powdered alliums) using powdered buttermilk that I gave in our Christmas baskets this past year, including instructions for how to mix it with mayo and sour cream. Seriously, any homemade salad dressing has such better, brighter flavors. But homemade ranch (especially with all fresh herbs) made it pretty much impossible for us to ever go back to the store-bought stuff!

I'd love to see you make a video about making buttermilk from your own dairy. You're in a perfect position to make your own real buttermilk whenever you make butter, since it's a by-product of that process. Using a fair amount just for ranch dressing and biscuits, it would be so easy tokeep some on hand instead of doing a hack with lemon juice. If it's not used up then it can be fed to the pigs. (and customers who buy your raw milk most likely would enjoy some real buttermilk)
