Very cool restoration Tony. I love how that Dake takes what used to be useless back to useful.

I bought the same style of Utica's at a local industrial supply house 35 years ago. I've used the hell out of them and they still work great. That was back in the days when my burg still had some industry. I first heard them called "button pliers" by a buddy who had spent time in a wire rolling mill. He said the name came from millhands using this style of pliers to snip off the "button" which formed on the end of the wire being rolled so that it could be fed into the next roll stand. That's good enough for me. When I sent my kid out into the world, I went down to the supply house to get him his own pair of button pliers. They still had them, but they were now unmarked knockoffs, so I took a pass on them. You're inspiring , Scout.

My hubby identified a pair of his favorite pliers from your video. When a teen, he found what turns out to be those same Cresent Tool Co. fencing pliers that you have. His favorite pliers. Nothing forged but identical markings and handle engraving. Thanks for sharing. They are so precise, they are like 10" tweezers.

the usualy method is to hammer with with the ball pein end, or use a centre punch , the problem is usually uneveness, tight spots than a nice even slight friction to the full action.,as i dont have a press, i hammer them and can spend an hour moving them to and fro and keeping oiling them till they give in

Hell Wire Works! Lol, When I was a kid I was at a flea market and this guy had what looked like a wooden suitcase, when he opened it up there was about twenty different tools all beautifully polished and held in place with leather straps on a green felt background... I was mesmerized! He said the case belonged to a tool salesman who sold tools to hardware stores! He wanted $200 for the case - that was 40 years ago!!! I was a kid and couldn't afford that but never forgot it! So now I make my own "salesman's samples". Lol. Thanks very much!!! 😃👍

Your solution for tightening the rivet is a lot more elegant than my method with a ball pein hammer and anvil. Loved these pliers as never seen this style in the UK. This weekend have been to a car boot sale and picked up 20 auger bits for £3, cleaned and oiled, very happy.

Hello Tony! You get some awesome deals at the “car boot sales”. Are they like a flea market where people sell out of the trunk of their cars? Thanks very much!!! 😃👍
@uktony1525
6 жыл бұрын
Exactly that. A large field with lines of cars and tables in front. Some people sell only one thing such as clothes, toys etc but others are genuine clear outs from sheds and garages where often the best bargains are to be found (last Saturday I got a nice Spear and Jackson hand saw for 50p). We do not get many garage sales in the UK but there is usually a weekend car boot sale within reasonable travelling distance.

yes auger bits are 'out of style' and thus can be bought cheap with good braces too, i bought a very good indeed stanley brace super cheap (proper beech wood handles) but all the features , the chuck it seems can hold anything, round and the square etc, so its actually useful

Hello Angel! I too was surprised by the Utica extended product line... It must have been crazy 100 years ago with all these up and coming tool makers trying to out-do the competition and build a better tool! Back then people worked really hard for their money and wasn't about to waste a dime! They bought the best they could afford because they wanted it to last, today things are throw-aways and people don't think that way! I was so happy the Dake fix worked! I'm glad to see the Drake did it's job on that rivet! My son is starting on his Lectrolite 10" pipe wrench today...pretty rusted in some places. Do you recommend just going to it with the wire wheel? Or giving it a vinegar bath or some such first?
@ScoutCrafter
6 жыл бұрын
Hello Christina! I just looked up the Wrench on Google! Very nice! Floating head design!!! If the wrench has a lot of rust I would use a vinegar soak just because it makes it easier to clean up at the end. The soak will take between 48 and 72 hours. If you take the wrench out of the vinegar and scrub off the rust every 8 hours or so it works much better. Then don't forget to soak it in Baking Soda and hot water rince for 20 minutes to neutralize the acid... The wrench will be in better shape then and the wire brushing will go very fast. Remember the eye protection near the wheel! =) Thanks and good luck!!!!!!!

@ScoutCrafter
6 жыл бұрын
Hello Tony! They use a Rivet as a permanent way to affix the two pieces together for the life of the tool, in a perfect world the tolerances should not change over time because of lubrication and lack of repetitive movement. All pliers should be tight but not binding. This is harder then it looks and a good amount of engineering goes into the devise that holds the pliers together. Some plier manufacturers switched to a nut/bolt design that can be re-tightened over time. Over a hundred years, like you said, I guess all surfaces can wear a little and loosen up a bit but It's nice to know that the rivet can be repressed to give additional life to the pliers! Thanks very much!!!!!!
