Hello everyone A new project, in my workshop! This time I took up an old and dead rusty axe. This axe for restoration was brought to me from the village, where it lay for many years, like a rusty piece of iron. I cut off a little extra and re-welded it, and now it's a new little hatchet. To restore the old axe, I needed to cut, weld with a welding machine, strengthen the walls of the eyelets, sand, file, remove rust, anneal, harden and release the axe. A lot of work was done and there was even a moment that I was sorry that I took it up, but I took the will into my fist and did it! I hope you like it.
The axe was rusty, so I used citric acid to remove the rust and a brush to remove the rough rust. After cleaning the axe, I cut off the damaged and unnecessary metal with an angle grinder. Then, using a welding machine and special electrodes, uoni 13/55 welded the axe into a new workpiece and reinforced the ax eyelets with the same electrodes. Then he polished the sides until the defects disappeared. Gave the axe a new shape. It's time to harden the axe, for this I carried out annealing, hardening, tempering of the workpiece. When I finished tempering the axe blade, I started sharpening it.
I used the following tools: wire brush, citric acid, pencil, ruler, welding machine, hammer, anvil, angle grinder, drill, grinder, orbital grinder, sandpaper.

Dear friends, if you decide to repeat what you saw. Do Not Forget - observe Safety Precautions. Gloves, mask, glasses, etc.
How I tempered an axe at home:
Annealing - We heat the metal to a temperature above critical. For steel U7, this indicator is760 °C. When working at home, the most important thing is to set the temperature correctly. After reaching the set temperature parameters, it is necessary to cool the workpiece slowly to 550 ° C. The cooling rate should not exceed 50 °C per hour. We leave the workpiece until the furnace is completely cooled. We clean the axe from scale and proceed to hardening.
Quenching - Any convenient method can be used to heat the tool: an oven, a stove or an ordinary bonfire. The temperature of the workpiece should reach 830 °C. The working edge is dipped into water to a depth of 3-4 cm . The optimum temperature of the liquid is 30-35 °C. The workpiece must be constantly in motion. Otherwise, the steam cushion will prevent uniform cooling. The duration of hardening is 3-4 seconds. To continue the procedure, it is necessary to prepare oil and a metal container. Please note: under the influence of high temperature, it may catch fire. As a security measure, it is necessary to prepare a piece of dense fabric. In case of fire, the oil container should be covered with a cloth, blocking access to oxygen. The workpiece is lowered into the liquid entirely. After this procedure, the axe material will be very hard and brittle. To eliminate this drawback, it is necessary to release the metal.
Vacation - In addition to reducing fragility, vacation relieves internal stresses that were formed during the hardening process. This procedure is best carried out in an oven with a temperature control function. The axe is placed in a chamber heated to 300 ° C. The duration of the vacation is 1 hour. The workpiece should cool at room temperature.
