My first car was a 4CV, my neighbor's son wreak it and they sold it to me for USD45.00 in 1963. It had a smashed front end but the engine and interior were spot on. I drove it about 800 miles to my Air Force duty station and loved ever minute of. It was a great car. Wish I had another one. Beautiful restoration. I'm doing a '62 Triumph TR3B right now and can't wait till it is finished.

REALLY nice restoration of this iconic little motor. Glad to see that you refrained from changing the wheels to crappy modern low-profiles - that would have looked totally classless. Great job!

Much admired the skills involved in the restoration and enjoyed a bit of nostalgia. I owned a '54 model back in '64-65 (until it was replaced by '58 Dauphine). They had more charisma than most cars of the time and just about anything made since but I fear the sportiness is entirely visual. As I recall they did 0 - 100 kph in about 45 (minutes). Enjoy your new toy.

I am amazed that you think you need a gadget to hold the bonnet open, especially since you have the extra rear vents. One thing that really impressed me about my Renaults (part 1 comments) was that even with the 45deg+ summer temperatures here in South Australia I never had any problems with my radiators boiling (as I passed seized Volkswagens on the Nullarbor Plain). Problem was Petrol Station attendants often mistakenly tried to put petrol in the radiator. Had to get a locking filler cap to stop them scalding themselves, as not many had seen any 4cv's "Outback, Down Under".

Le dernier modèle créé par cette marque française disparue comme tant d'autres... Peu de ces kits ont survécu... nostalgie des années 80, quand les amateurs de son construisaient leurs enceintes...Snif... HS off. Superbe restauration, cela dit.

Of course very good job! These 4 CV have a weird shape, especially with the fenders that continue into the doors. The 4 CV was the french Beetle with quite many units sold. But why this shape?

I can't answer that as I don't know but personally I like its shape. It is a bit smaller than the Beetle though.

Did this model of car always overheated that much or is just this one in particular that needs all that extra cooling?
@OldTimerGarage
7 жыл бұрын
the engine is at the back and the air intakes are on the rear wings as you can see in some pictures. The air vents on the rear bonnet are supposed to be there for the hot air to escape so in order to cool the engine further, you can either increase the air intake which is difficult or increase the escape for the hot air. That's why some people like here add a device to keep the bonnet slightly open all the time and that's why the owner of this car added the additional air vents as well.
@Darkover92
7 жыл бұрын
Yes, but not all rear-engined air-cooled cars do overheat. I think of the Fiat 500, 600, 126 and so on, or the Porsche 911; they also have air intakes on the rear bonnet.
@OldTimerGarage
7 жыл бұрын
That's true. I don't really know more about this for this specific car if I am honest. I think that it is an upgrade that is not mandatory but improves the situation. Many of these cars did run without additional air vents but some people like to add them.

Nice job but the wierdest way to restore and respray bit by. Bit like the mods all but the open boot lid
@OldTimerGarage
6 жыл бұрын
The open boot lid was more of a necessity here. Because the engine was at the back, they all tended to overheat. By keeping the bootlid open, te air flow was improved and the engine kept cooler.

Sweet 4cv. These are so Cool. I've seen these Hot Rodded with VW Engines and Front Engines. Someone will GM LS Power one of these... Sport, Non Sport, and etc... What are the difference(s)? Some have 3 Horizontal Chrome Bars(?) in the front and some have 6 thin. From what I've seen online, it's not a just Model Year change. I've seen them both ways on 1950 thru 1959. Unless... Some people are Posting Images and listing the wrong Year. I have a Heller 1/24 Scale Renault 4cv "Sport" Model Kit. Some aspects of the assembly are questionable, but it ought to be a cool addition to my collection. Not an easy Kit to get in the U.S. There are no Hinges for the Boot or Bonnet. It's not a issue, as I can add working Pins to said parts to keep them in place. Attaching the Wheels is an Issue. I don't care for the method in the Instructions. Melting the Axle Pins is NEVER a good Idea and Cementing Wheels... They wouldn't roll. It wouldn't work with Aftermarket Wheels. The Fronts will have to be Drilled out and 1/16"/.0635"/1.587mm Metal Pins used in their place. For the Rear... I have to cut the Axle from the Springs and use a new Styrene Tube in it place. Then, It's just a matter of cutting a 1/16"/.0635"/1.587mm Steel Rod to length. (Yes...There Will be Cursing). In the end, I'll have my choice of Factory Stock or (Pretty Much) any Wheel and Tyre combination I choose. I have and built the 1/24 Renault 8 Gordini, Type 1300 Rallye. What cool looking Cars. The Kit's Tyres were garbage, the seats and Roll Bar were/are made from the same Vinyl/Rubber... Yikes! The person or people that designed those parts, should be slapped... HARD. I have Extra Tyres and had no problem finding a usable set of Firestone's. (I still have a lot of them). Ever wonder what happens to retired Mechanics that can no longer stand on their own legs for longer than five minutes? We go back to where we started... Building Model Kits.
