An easier way to make the handle is to cut the shape out of the proper thickness of wood. Then route the edges. That will create an oblong width handle. I prefer thicker leather for axes.

Seems bearded axes were developed to give a large cutting area with minimal weight in the head. Some are also designed with a recess in the beard to allow a closer grip to the head to shave wood, as for tinder. Seems to be an all-purpose design. Very nice resto. You've also just taught me to sew leather without using double needles!
