I moved to Orlando to go to college in mid-July of 1998, having been there on 5 separate vacations in the 80’s and 90’s and loving it. I still live there today 25 years later. When I first moved down though, within a month or two I bought an annual pass to Universal. Couldn’t afford Disney. Me and one of my college buddies, who also had a pass and was going to school for television and film production with me, used to go to Universal right around this time SO much. At least once a week. By fall of 1998, you could even upgrade your pass to include Islands of Adventure too, and we got to go to it for a few months while still in soft opening. Heck, even when it first opened, in those days before social media, not many people even knew about it outside of Orlando. So you could literally just walk right on rides. I can remember going on Dueling Dragons 21 times in a row once. But both parks were in such peak form. And especially IOA, was absolutely brand new and flawless. It was before they even had to make changes and block things off, because of irresponsible guest ripping props off of the queues. And I remember more recognizable music playing, like the score from the TV movie Merlin, with Sam Neil, playing in the queue for Dueling Dragons. Before I guess they lost the rights for it. But CityWalk was also new, the second parking garage was brand new, the Portofino and Hard Rock hotels were brand new, the canal, the new Hard Rock Cafe and Hard Rock Live, and I saw SO many movies at the new Loew’s Universal Cineplex. I even was fortunate enough to meet and shake hands with Steven Spielberg AT the visitors center entrance to Jurassic Park. He was there getting a private tour of the whole park, having been a consultant. It could never happen today, with how much security there is. I’d be tackled to the ground. But back then people were more normal and things weren’t so paranoid. And my friend and I were on the turn Rosie O’Donnell Show when it shot in the comic book theater at Toon Lagoon. She gave everyone a free night for two at the new Portofino Bay hotel. Such amazing times. The parks feel like a big corporate mess now, and it makes me sad.

Жыл бұрын
Yes! T2 was the best when if first opened, everything about the experience was insanely impressive, I absolutely love Universal Studios, especially as we had nothing then & still nothing here now, that is on this theme park level, which is such a shame as it would be incredible to have something like Universal Studios Florida over here, every now and then news pops up that something like these parks are going to open over here, which gets our hopes up but then nothing, There was even at one point a rumour going round that a Steven Spielberg movies orientated theme park was going to open in London, but again that never surfaced

Did the entire park with ease.... was awesome (only drawback is u miss some of the ques with the videos & props.... but back then they werent AS good). Was probably my favorite theme park trip ever (been many times to all of disney & universals Flordia parks & went to Cali's last year for the 1st time). @DisneyDave I was a kid when it happened so memory is a little fuzzy. What I remember was as my family entered the park cast members by the que to get in were offering one per person one time use return tickets since several rides were down that day. Jaws was one of them. I believe we overheard a cast member say why it was closed was it bit someone. We also heard a few very scared people talking about what happened leaving the park. Supposedly earlier that day a person leaned over to far and the Bruse malfunctioned somehow and went closer to the boat than usual . These two things together lead to someone getting bit. It was in July of 1998 if anyone else was there that day I would love to know more.

I remember when we visited that same year (1997), my dad (who’s 6’8”) was chosen for the Earthquake interactive section every time we went on it. 😂 “You look big and strong sir; come and pull on this rope.” Edit: the IoA preview space is amazing! I think they should build something similar now for Epic Universe - it would really get people hyped up. I especially loved the woman saying “See you in 1999 for the adventure of a lifetime!” When is Epic Universe scheduled for? They could definitely do something similar, right?

Jaws was the absolute best & yeah I agree Diagon Alley is incredible 👍 Good to hear your Dad was chosen for the Earthquake interactive, I'm also tall (6'4") and always duck down to hide so not to stand out! 😂😂
