Very nice job Brad. I recently volunteered to repair a friend's guitar. She brought me the MOST beat up guitar, bridge pulling up, cracks in sound board.(It had been languishing in her basement untold years.) now here's the kicker, it's a Larivee!!! Mahogany back & sides, plus Mahogany neck. I think the fret board is Ebony (I can't scrape it, the woods to hard grain is extremely tight.) I wanted to slap her (but in her usual condition I doubt it would have any effect. LoL) any way I'm taking my time. You don't know how sick I was when I saw the badge. OMG Any way you did a spectacular job on that Nut & headstock. (Nuts ain't easy) I ordered a bunch of those unbleached blanks. They are decent TBH. Great playing too.(As usual) Blessings!!! I have a 1990's Gibson LP, and the old Arias, despite being bolt on, kinda sounds more like a LP. I found a guy selling some paf's from a 335, and installed those in one of them. If you can believe it anyways. Thanks for the cool vid, and jam at the end. Is that your Steve Hillage sounding atmospheric trip track during the sanding? @@TheGuitologistYeah it absolutely has to be a 71-73. You can find this exact guitar in the 1971-73 Ibanez electric catalog as the blank headstock 2350G and it has the inlay stopping at the 17th fret. Pot dates might narrow it. In the 74 catalog the fretboard was completely changed to trapeze to the 21st and removed the rounded fretboard end and the 1st fret inlay. They also added a SN to the neck plate. Along with yours, they were also branded CMI, Antoria, Mi, MANN and many others through the years. But they all remain fantastic Gibson alternatives that in someways, as you found out, really do best that era of Gibson. It’s no wonder they C&D’d them. And honestly, bolt on for the win!

It intonated perfectly with barrel saddles and what a surprise. So fast forward, I found a cheap squire that I loved the body but the neck was razor thin. Upon looking for a nice 50's style neck I said fuck it, I'll buy another Glarry just for the neck. Yes I did carve the headstocks to look "traditional" but man that Glarry stuff is not bad at all as long as you know how to level frets and setup and all that fun stuff. Looks like someone gave this guitar a frontal lobotomy! Yikes! That’s likely the best explanation judging by the placement of that hole. Or maybe it’s a speed hole like Homer Simpson once made in his car. “Surely I’ll play faster if I add a speed hole!” The player might have also had a picture frame with a photo of his mommy inserted in there to boost his confidence on stage. Or maybe it was to lighten the headstock for a neck dive issue that could have been fixed with a solid strap. You know, all sorts of possibilities! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 P.S. I forgot to mention everything turned out great because I was so shocked about that hole!

One thing I've started to notice with these overseas cheaper parts, is sometimes they're name brand stuff that maybe didn't make the cut to be on the name brand instruments. The S style body you were gifted appears to be plywood. If so, would it be a Hondo body? I owned one once and parted it out. The string spacing at the bridge required Asian pickups when trying to restore upgrade it (check spacing in order to pass correctly over the exposed pole pieces) . The saddles were specific / wider spread, as well. [in comparison USA and MIM]. A learning project that came down to what is/ was (likely) the Law-suit dodge (avoidance ploy) modifying string-spacing in the hard-to-see 1,000ths became a 'stop, start and go' process of NON-success that took the fun out of it. Pre-evaluate string spacing, in-advance, pocket size, etc. It was a plywood body. Just sayin'. Thanks

Commenting again after hearing you play it after doing the referb...no flies on that guitar...it sounds spectacular, and obviously is not getting in the way of playing it, haha! Just shows with a little TLC how good those guitars are, and really are a great option for someone who doesn't want, or can't, spend 2 to 3K on a USA Les Paul.

Talk about holy moly awesome video Brad. learned a lot about wet sanding from just watching. Are you gonna take a cheap cheap Amazon guitar out of the box and onto a stage? ✌️😁

Could you have send the top of the headstock with a block to have a more straight finish?

Always use a sandick block for level surfaces like that, makes the result much more consistent

I'd never drill a hole in my guitars, especially one of that quality but it would be cheaper to just put a long screw in the wall and easier if you didn't live near a guitar shop back in the day, I can see the convenience.

I've gotten necks from Temu and AliExpress that I think must be overflow from the plants that make Squier parts.

I think you're right in a lot of cases. In the case of these neck though, I don't know what Fender product they would have gone on really.

I’ve never understood why people like to hang their guitars on hooks through a hole in the head??? There seems to a lot more of those guys around these days!! Like you said, maybe they got a hole in their head too??

I'm thinking that hole in the headstock was to hold something like a sparkler a la Kiss.

Never thought of that one. If so, I take back all that i said! Maybe it held some kind of Roman candle that would fire explosive mortars at the audience. Badass!

I had an old Elektra 310 or 320 MPC Les Paul. The sustain was unbelievable. Beautiful guitar! Elektras were great for the money. Gibson players hated me, lol.

If Temu has sanding blocks get one , this would have been easier and done a better job.
