Ive been working on my nishiki recently since covid-19 and shelter in place got me bored as hell. Such a nice bike :) can't wait to ride it after I finish the upgrades I made, always such a giddy feeling

Quality tunes, nice vid quality, interesting backgrounds, pretty girls, informative video. Nice job. I too just bought a Nishiki International. Needs some spoke tuning but decent shape. $40. ...now I’m considering restoring it. As someone said, “What one man can do another can do.” Thank you for the inspiration.

Scott Moore I did this in a small apartment in New York City (although I did have some more space to work outside and in a workshop), but this could all be done pretty easily without many tools or a large workspace. I recommend it, bikes are a great hobby and fun to fix up. Thanks for your comment.

@@porterfielddynamics do you still have your nishiki road bike the blue one, do you still ride it
@porterfielddynamics

@@GabrielLopez-nd5fc I have it yes, but it's no longer blue as you hopefully can tell by the video. It's sadly too small for me (I'm about 6ft) so I don't really ride it, I tend to ride my single speed just because it fits me better. I still need to find a front derailleur for it, but because I don't ride it I haven't felt like putting any more money into it than I already have.

Excellent and definitelly inspiring video for everyone who wants a cool bike, but stores are screaming "sold out!", but there is in garage old touring/road bike waiting for a new life. In my opinion, vintage steel roadbikes has more character than modern ones.

Nicely done! The clear coat makes the bike look great and up to date. I have the same bike I've ridden all over the world on. It's in great shape but maybe time to do something like this. I like the clear coat.

I recommend! I was going to try and paint it blue, but the raw steel tubing and brazing just looked so good I had to leave it as is.

It looks like removing the paint is the most difficult/tedious part of the restoration? I have a 1983 Nishiki, paint is still in very good shape but I love the finish on yours.
@porterfielddynamics

Yes, definitely was the hardest and most time consuming part. I was originally planning to fully repaint as well which would have been even more inconvenient. I loved the color of mine, so if your paint is in good enough shape and you don't want to make your life harder, I'd say just leave it :).

@@porterfielddynamics thanks yes I was thinking to just touch up the problem areas as they are not too bad. Still have this bike, how is the clear coat working out? Some say you have to be careful of rust as it is one less layer of protection.

Fantastic! I am looking into refurbishing my 1980's 4130 Nishiki. I'm concerned about finding replacement parts. Could you recommend some sources? My bike shop wrote it off as not worth it to them. Thank you!!!!

Sorry for the late response. I modernized mine, so didn't have a problem finding new parts, but OEM parts may require some extra ebay searching.

Just wondering, I just bought a Nishiki prestige for $ 20 bucks at goodwill store it looks like new except the tires are dryed out and could need replacing, the only reason I bought it was that it looked new, are they worth anything now ? 11/30/19

Dave Scheer Old Japanese 10 speeds generally aren’t worth too much, even in pristine condition. This bike restoration wasn’t done for a profit, instead it was an important bike to me and I wanted to give it some love. With that being said, some cleaning, a little bit of maintenance, and the right buyer, most bikes like that can sell for 2-3 hundred dollars, maybe more maybe less. It really depends on who you’re selling it to. I’d say if you got the bike for 20 bucks, it’s worth doing some basic maintenance to and replacing the tires/tubes. You’ll probably be able to fetch a bit of a profit on Craigslist or eBay, especially if you keep all your expenses to below about $100 which shouldn’t be hard. Good luck, have fun!

Robby Yudha Phasa , I bought the bike , it just needs a front tire , it's in great shape it must have been hanging in someone's garage all these years ( the tire is dry rotted and split ) and they figured they weren't using it and donated it at goodwill store , I just cleaned it up and have been looking for a good deal on a front tire . 😊

@@davescheer5038 well good to know you bought it. Old bicycle for me is like a simple time machine. What frame is it? Is that the old 27 or 700c?

Robby Yudha Phasa , it looks like a 27" but the rear tire say's 700-23 ? I'm not a racing bike enthusiast ,I bought the bike cause it looked like it was in great shape and it was only twenty bucks, after I bought it I immediately took it for a spin in the parking lot everything worked perfect ! I was in aww , it wasn't a week later that I went to good wills main store and a sales person was putting bikes in the rack she had a like new trail bike the chain was broke it to was $19.95 ,it needed a new chain and I had one at the house ! Score ! Needless to say the wife wanted to know if I was starting a bike shop . 🤔
