Its a nice outcome (well done) but why didn't you use a former (a support) inside the helmet to add strength and shape when applying the putty? To be honest I am a novice in metal repair, stabilisation and restoration. If it can't be welded, fettled or soldered it's beyond my capabilities so I hope you don't feel my question is being critical of your technique.

That would have been way better just rust treated and left as was, and made into a lamp, so the light could shine thru.

probably not, the helmet in the old state would probably have rotted away in a few years. due to this restauration it is a perfect helmet for people who like to do reenactment so it is actually worth more probably

thanks for the video, I have a relic helmet so rusted , every time I touch it small pieces fall off, is there something that I can spray on it just to stop it from falling apart?

I think it would be best to spray it with mat clear coat spray. A thick coat should be enough to stop it from falling apart.

I would have used fibreglass on the inside first to create structural strength ,but seriously its just a piece of junk ,I noticed you used the word glory ,this rubbed me up the wrong way a little bit ,there wasn't anything glorious done by the Germans,
@patrickperry6945

I’m in agreement with you. “Glory” seems an odd choice of word. But, on the upside. With this fellow using only auto body compound to “restore” this item I wouldn’t say it will be very enduring.
@okandmanniska1183

You kind of people don't understand what bringing german stuff back go glory means, stuff back then used and issued by the germans was far more stylish and modern plus the way you said there was nothing good done by germans during ww2 is a cringely incorrect. Some germans were evil, yes and some weren't and lots of them were drafted at a threat their whole family would be murdered plus most of the war criminals got justice but lots of US warcriminals didn't same with UK and USSR. So yeah also it was in good enough shape to be restored, most of the time these helmets are in worse shape than this and still restore them! 😂
@patrickperry6945
Жыл бұрын
@@okandmanniska1183 I think you misinterpreted what the guy said. He didn’t say their stuff wasn’t good. He disagreed with the word “glory” to describe it. The German ppl, during WWII, had superior technology, I would agree. But that didn’t make the stuff glorious. The goals of the Third Reich should certainly be discounted. I suppose, upon reading this thread again. Restoring a German item from that era can be described as being brought back to its glory in a physical sense. But nothing more.
@okandmanniska1183

@@patrickperry6945 the goals of the the third reich most certainly shouldn't be discounted, of course the concentration camps and stuff, but jet fighters and machine guns that revolutioned the world and rockets designed by a future Nasa engineer are definitely not be discounted, all those men were made in the wrong era and lived through the wrong era, if they were the same age as they were after the war whenever they made their inventions they would be glorified and stuff all because of their countries history, but yeah, alot of the german stuff is offensive to over reactive snowflakes who spend all their day on their screen getting offended by everything they see rather than being like a normal kid. The future generations are clearly the worst generations and as time progresses any military memorabilia from the 3rd reich will be ordered to be destroyed.
