Nice work resurrecting the old peavey. I found an old hand forged felling wedge a couple years back but can’t decide the best way to clean it up without completely losing its character. I think maybe taking a wire brush to it, then running it through electrolysis might be the best way to go. Probably keep it as a mantelpiece.

I'm guessing that the peavey was forgotten in the woods back in the days of two-man crosscut saws!

I've always wondered what the spike tip was used for on one of those, since it's the hook that does the important stuff.

The Spike tip is mostly for using as a pry pole. Was more useful back in the days when they ran logs down the rivers.

Hi, Pete! Just found your videos and really enjoying them. I love that clamp design you built and nice resto on the peavey.

Nicely done, Peter. I have a Peavey that someone cut the handle off flush with the metal. I’d thought about drilling it out but didn’t know how long the spike was. Now that I have an idea I may go ahead. I have that same Craftsman lathe and understand its limitations. Thanks for sharing!

Here is a tip- I couldn't figure out how the handle was held in place without any screw holding the tapered ferrule on the handle. The trick is to have just a bit of wood stick out of the tip of the ferrule. When you drive the spike in, it will hold it fast similar to the wedge of an axe handle. Notice how I din't do that here, and I had problems with it falling off!

Peter Collin so are you saying you shouldn’t have drilled the end of the handle?
@petercollin5670

@@fryefoto No. I should have tapered the point end of the handle thinner so that it would stick just a little out of the tip of the ferrule.

Nice job.was the windmill making that screeching sound?

Yes. I had done a job about 9 years before, near that same windmill, and it was whistling back then.

3:09 Sliiiick ! Anyone have recommendations for REMOVING a chunk of old handle still jammed in my peavey head ? Old man told me to throw it in a fire and burn it out.

Went a bit short on the handle there. Don't these things usually have a 5' handle on them.

I have a store bought one that is just a few inches longer. I maxed out the bed of my lathe. Not much else I could do.
