restored means to bring back to its original condition... so, your joke doesnt really make sense.

Yes, MrTomaat23 is quite correct. This video was uploaded in badly 480p video presentation. Should have done in 1080p, so why not ???

Now, just 12 years after this was uploaded, a third of the storage on that giant server bay they showed can now be stored on a little micro SD card. Insane.

Good video about the Lowry restoration process! John Lowry himself died in 2012, the same year his process earned a technical Academy Award.

I'm actually bringing some very old family footage from the late 30's to a specialist to have all of it converted to dvd. Some of the film negatives I have seen and it looked as if they were in the very early stages of fading and rusting. I'm extremely grateful that 2 films in their original tins from those days did not turn to powder from decay, so those will be restored as well. The process of film restoration is amazing; I cannot believe how far we have come with technology. It's unreal.

ᏰᏗşιℓ Can I ask what country you are based in? Yes, much of the detail can be saved from old films, but it helps to scan the film at least at 2K -3K to begin with. If your films are family footage from the 1930s, than chances are the person who shot then was economically privileged, and/or a professional camera operator. From the late 1940s - 1970s it wasn't unusual for "Home Movie Enthusiasts" to make 9.5 and 16mm films. Certainly by the 1960s the bases of these stocks were largely stable, although so much depended on the developing "soup" the film was subjected to. Digital de-artefacting aged film is quite another matter. There are applications to do this, and they do it very well. From my experience a range of digital apps and plugins are preferable to create well restored/ re-mastered clips.

Peter Solomon I am based in the US, and the films I am speaking about are from my father's side. I had not met any of the people in the films he has saved, however, I am informed that it was his father who recorded most of it. My Scottish side. If I were to tell someone exclusively about my father's side, it would be that my grandparents were immigrants (both his father and mother were 1st generation Americans) According to my father, his family had money and one of the main things they did was record themselves and do vaudeville. I'm sure the family paid a lot of money to get a personal recorder in the 30's. Looking at the films, and speaking with my father, it was obvious they were privileged, but also hard workers. I have personally looked at the reels and they were 16 mm.

It is extremely heartening to know that restoration technology such as this is now available. It is also fortunate that somebody had the foresight to retain what just a decade ago would have then been considered a hopelessly degraded, totally un-viewable and un-restorable can of decomposing nitrate film.

Goodness! 600 Mac Pro computers in 2009 being employed as servers to do the restoration on. That is, computers that would have cost around $4,000- $7,000 USD per unit becoming redundant and disposable by 2011-2012. I'm pleased someone has the wherewithal to bankroll this work.

Not to pick nits, but those systems were a little older (and perhaps the documentary produced a little earlier) than what you're thinking...they're Power Mac G5s. The easiest way to differentiate is that the G5s only have 1 optical drive door, where the Mac Pros have 2. Can only imagine how noisy it must get when all those hot-running G5s ramp up! :-P

sir, i want learn film restoration through correspondnce course, is it available?
@petersolomon8894
8 жыл бұрын
+ravindra rao I do not know whether such a correspondence course exists. Certainly, there exists production companies that are dedicated to film restoring. Aside from custom designed software used by staffers of people like Martin Scorsese, there are only a small number of software packages available to individuals and small studios, to do digital restoration with. The most commonly used app is the British PFClean. It costs around $10,000 USD. At the time of this post it has precious little in the way of training made available by it's developer, Pixel Farm. DRS Nova MTI is an American product, or number of products designed to assist in digital restoration of film. Prices start at around $12,500 USD for an application. The only other app I know of is Diamant Film Restoration. This is a German made application: I believe prices start at around $20,000 USD. Finally, there is Phoenix Film restoration software. This is an American product that may require an investment in hardware, also. If you look in to these applications more closely, you may find that the vendors have not updated their product, or their training in over 3 years. In addition, not every application is available for Mac OSX.
