That’s a great project. I did something similar 2 years ago. Besides sanding the plates, I left them 24 hours in a mix of water and vinegar. Then, another 24 hours in a mix of water and baking soda. Finally clean with steel wool. Once you finish, you’ll realize all the amount of rust hidden in those plates. After painting, they look way better than new.

Thank you! I love to hear about and see other restoration projects. I tried vinegar once but found I could clean off rust effectively with just nylon and wire brushes. Either way, it saves a perfectly good set of plates!

This is the best video that I have seen for weight plate restoration. Soaking in vinegar and then in baking soda and then scrubbing with steel wool and all that is good BUT if you have a good drill and these drill attachments, the job is WAY easier.

It’s my go to for black. The antique pewter is great for silver weights. The wire brushes are such a great investment. $15-$20 for the set and I’ve cleaned countless weight plates and dumbbells with them.

Love your channel and this latest on weight restoration. Couple of questions if you don't mind. 1) Why didn't you do a vinegar bath after the dust removal? I've done that with a crazy rusty nailset that fell under my deck 4 years ago and was only found when I replaced a deck board. After 24hrs just used an old toothbrush and every bit came off. 2) Where on earth do you find these kinds of deals? I'm all over the local Craig's list, Kijiji and Facebook sites. Haven't seen anything like that. Anyway, long post, keep up the great work!

Thanks man! I’m happy to answer your questions. I never use vinegar. I’m not against using vinegar but I like to paint right after I get the rust off with the wire brush. I’ve never felt like it was necessary to add an extra step in the process. I find these deals on marketplace or Facebook usually. This one was from a guy who renovates houses. The previous owner left them and this guy just wanted to get rid of them. Generally to find the deals you’ve got to check often, have cash ready, and be available to pick up immediately. That’s what’s worked for me anyway.

Not a gym guy, but something to help with rust. I use Ospho, it's a mix of phosphoric acid and other goodies. It turns the rust into iron phosphate, which is inert.

I did exactly the same, well, kinda, only thing I did different is when finish using the wire brush I wash the plates with soap and water , dry them with newspaper or a rag thoroughly and apply a coat of WD-40 but this time I let the WD-40 dry by itself, this takes days obviously but there will be no trace of rust. I also did not paint them and the rust never came back.

How many spray cans did it take to do this number of weights and how many coats did you give them? I’ve just bought 420kg for £250 ( that’s about 925lb for about $310 in your system) I’ve got about 40+ plates to do😫 thanks

I recently tried this on some old plates. I removed the rust with wire brush, primed a couple coats and then 3 coats of Rustoleum hammered spray paint. They looked great but it seemed like the would chip with the slightest bumps. Any suggestions on how to make the paint more durable?

Just paint on Ospho and you are good to go. Ospho (orthophosphoric acid) changes the red rust,(iron oxide), to black iron phosphfide, and prevents further rust.

The least amount of work is better. The plates stop rusting once you get them out of the yard exposed to rain.

Does the paint weather proof them? I have an outside setup. I feel like I should buy some new iron plates and immediately paint them. Or is this a dumb idea?
@KaizenDIYGym
Жыл бұрын
Concrete plates do well in the weather and they're pretty easy to make. Iron plates will eventually rust, the paint will chip with regular use. If you're set on iron and you're buying them new, I wouldn't advise adding paint on top of the paint that's already there. I'd use them and let them eventually chip and rust, then clean them as needed.

The nylon brush was unnecessary as the wire brush would've removed both the rust and the dust. Also, an angle grinder isn't required if you're using a drill.
