Brian, you just made my day! On Amazon Prime Day... I ordered two more (bought the first one months ago), dense foam, two-step, dog stairs for my aging Jack Russell. The first, vacuumed-sealed steps, opened right up and re-inflated in minutes. Just like the original steps I'd purchased. The second set of steps... didn't. They were badly creased in two places, and remained that way hours later. I was at my computer contacting Amazon about a return and replacement, when I thought about looking on KZitem for a solution. Your video is brilliant! It worked beautifully! Thank you so much!

This is a good question. I can tell from experience this doesn't restore the foam to its original longevity. I tried this with indoor seat cushions - the first time I steamed the cushions held up for a long time, but each successive steaming took less time for the foam to collapse again. Automotive foam might be hardier than the foam I used this technique on. But if you're thinking of replacing the foam in your car I'd say go for it while you have the covers off. The steaming is only a stopgap fix.

A MORE PERMANENT SOLUTION IS TO simply add more foam!: Add more foam UNDER the seat foam cushion: Free used thick carpet padding works well set on top of the spring deck. You might be able to add several layers, as long as the fabric will reattach without being too tight. Plus carpet padding resists the spring deck cutting into it. For the driver's seat, often 1 large sheet, then a smaller sheet just under the area the buttocks sits. Also add small strips as needed by the door where the foam can get broken down upon exiting causing the seat metal frame to be felt. Ideally when you sit in the seat, you want the seat to feel about as firm as the back does to your back. NOW for SOFA's, I've had good luck carefully removing the foam from the zippered cover. Then use a hack saw in hand and cut from the back center line horizontally towards the front. Do not completely cut through the front, so leaving a hinge, like a hamburger bun has a hinge. Then stuff the cut middle with several full sheets of thick used carpet padding. Now compress the foam and very carefully roll the fabric cover back over the foam. Take care

Does this work for the upper part? The side pads on the backrest, they shouldnt wear taht much as you dont sit on them but just lean but still, this is 16-17 + years old car, on mine they dont seem to keep me steady when I enter fast into a turn, maybe they need to be done too. It is BMW E39 with Comfort Saloon from E38
@TheSeatShop
6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reaching out Dimi, you are correct in wear to the bottom cushion is usually more common but the top does wear down over time as well. The Steam to a foam only helps with installation and not a solution to foam that has lost its density... if the structure to the foam is gone I would suggest taking the top cover off and adding a Block or Two of foam from an arts and crafts store and glue it on with some 3M spray adhesive. If you are not comfortable in doing this task as a DIY project I would also suggest taking this to a local upholstery shop. Please let me know if you need any more help or information
@dimikaza1992

I see. I have a comfort front seat from E38 with all functions but the leather is worn out. I also have my old seats which are just a regular leather but in quite good condition so I was thinking of switching the leather. The foam on my comfort seats is squashed so I was thinking this would be great but since you say it is not a solution but only helps with installation I guess I m disappointed :) Maybe I can switch the foam too from my other seat to the e38 seats, I think they are the same. How long does the swollen effect lasts?

This is not a permanent solution, this is done in upholstery shops to make the covers fit correctly. This will give you some life back into you foam but if the foam has lost its structure it will very quickly flatten out again. Your best bet is to rebuild the foam up again by removing the bad section and gluing and reforming that section back up with some block foam. Or you can just get a brand new foam which will replace the entire foam.

Hey Matthew, thanks for the comment, so steaming the foam works for about a week or so, if your foam has lost its structure it means that it will be back to being flat and you will either need to get your foam repaired or you will need to get a new foam. We do not repair foams unless we are doing R&D on them but we do sell brand new foams that are denser than the factory foams and will also have a support backing so that the seat frame does not chew it up underneath. Here is a link to most common foam for the 2008 F-150 - www.theseatshop.com/2004-2008-ford-f150-lariat-super-crew-driver-side-durofoam-replacement-bottom-foam-cushion-p7/20567/

This is a temporary fix and depending on the condition of your foam, could be anywhere from a few months to a year (maybe). @@MichaelCwll not really... we chose a steamer since it is the most inexpensive way of doing this. What you need is steam and not heat so if you have something else that releases steam at a constant rate you can try that. Polyurethane foam has a finite life of only a few year. It off gasses thus losing some of it's chemical properties to the atmosphere. It loses it's flexibility and crumbles. No way does this "restore" poly foam cushions. It only puffs up deteriorated foam. It might be helpful for a used car salesman to make the seats look better for a sale but they will flatten right out in no time.
@TheSeatShop
7 жыл бұрын
You are exactly right Jamie. That is why we developed our Durofoam line of foam cushions. The steaming is a temp fix to puff it up and make the new seat cover look better. The factory foam is junk. Our new foam is a different compound and density. If you are in the market check it out. Thank you for the comment as well. Take care.
