I paid $10.00 for an eico 950B in the early 80's. You can reform caps with that too. Advance the voltage until the eye Tube starts to close. Wait a while until it opens back up then advance it until the eye Tube closes and repeat until you reach the working voltage. Simple and cheap. I have a Sprague TO5 and a TO6A. They are one of the best but that Eico will do everything you need folks and much cheaper than either the Sprague or the Heathkit. Eico's tend to sell for much less than the others.

It is good that you resurrect these old radios ! I am of the opinion that if old parts still work and is close to their original tolerance then leave them in circuit. Broken or out of tolerance resistors, caps, micas, low emission tubes must be replaced. If you want to keep the original look of the old electrolytic caps, then pull the stuffings out of the old cap body and stuff a new cap inside. Reforming caps is a temporary solution, not to be relied on. Thanks for the video !!

For a cheap radio, that thing is quite impressive. Thanks for a good video. That radio is worth a full restoration and alignment.

Pla-Mor (own custom dial face ) AKA Truetone model D707 for Western Auto dept stores . Ballast tube is a BK55B or BK55C. K indicates the pilot lamp is a #47 most likely. 55 indicates 55 Volts and 300 mA from pin 3 to 7 with a tap for the lamp on pin 8. It receives 540 to 1725 kHz. The schematic on the bottom is a lot clearer than the one you can find on line. Not really a signal puller but it does hold its own at night! That after a new power cord and long wire antenna was added. Otherwise still original less newish E-caps and a coupling cap.

That looks like 👍 a radio 📻 that a drugstore would have sold many years ago. It would 🔝 today’s modern Crosley by a far cry 😢. That in your hand 🤚 looks like 👍 the dial light 💡 bulb 💡. Yes 👍 those troublesome paper 📑 capacitors. This is a very nice 👍 radio 📻. Your friend, Jeff.

Plamor D-707 circa 1942 according to some websites. Interesting design - thanks for sharing this video. If I'm keeping a set for myself and it works without changing the capacitors out I sometimes risk leaving them in - except for the grid coupler to the audio output and the caps across the mains input or from live/neutral to chassis. I put a fuse inline and leave the original mains smoothing caps in - if they reform OK. My set - my risk, is the way I see it. I never leave a set on or plugged in if I'm not in or near the room it's in or if I'm going to bed. As long as I'm mindful of the dangers of old tube equipment I can't see any problem with not re-capping, even if radios are re-capped and PAT tested and have all the safety features you can reasonably think of, they are still old electronic devices and have a risk associated with operating them. They just need treating with respect.

I kind of find it disrespectful that these AM stations don't even want to identify with their AM anymore. They want to just tout their FM. You don't even hear WBBM identify 780 in Chicago it's the 105.9 FM. I think in a lot of ways that's really misleading to the public. And I think that the FCC ought to make them identify their a.m.
@radiotvphononut

I agree. If the FCC would let them keep the FM translator without the AM, they'd probably turn in their AM license (which would be a big mistake).

I love these 4 tube TRF's due to their connection to the Great Depression. And that one works better than any I've ever had. I agree that in this case, there's no harm in running it with it's original components....after all, isn't that what they did when those sets were relatively new? If something went bang, they just sent it out for repair

...on just a few data-integrated rolls of film rolled up and stuffed in those old electrolytic caps, one could fit the library of congress now. That'd be a fun upgrade, just upload every-single Talking-Book into a Terabyte or two of solid state harddrive.. screw bleutooth.

@ 15:55 maybe Glasslinger serviced it 🤣 They are a fantastic person for working on old radios as far as knowledge of the circuits and parts,, but the habit of tack soldering everything kinda infuriates me, it's just lazy. IMO, if tack soldering was acceptable, why didn't every manufacturer of every electronic device made use it, they didn't ( with the exception of silver coated ceramic blocks, usually found in old Tektronix scopes)
