I'm at this place because I had such a horrible time internally and emotionally being muslim for almost 30 years. I keep thinking that spirituality would be me back to that horrible place and perhaps atheism can free me altogether from thinking soke being hates me.

My suggestion: first have a strong inner compass pointing you towards what is right or wrong, and try hard to error on the side of freedom and justice. Let people do what they want as long as they don't hurt others in the process. Second look towards science and rationality and ethics for your answers and let religion go the way of astrology and divining rods. Discard any type of supernatural claim. Believe me I was a jesus freak and letting go of virgin birth myths and a hell etc was difficult but has resulted in a deep feeling of freedom and a strong sense of self. In your case you would need to discard the attractions of dawah and the morally superior feeling of not being an infidel. Have you read "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali? Or "unveiled" by jasmine mohammad. or "now they call me infidel" by noni darwish. or "son of hamas"? Strongly recommend them

I was raised in Mormonism and was heavily entrenched for @25 years when I started to learn so much….then I became an atheist/agnostic. So, honestly, I worry about atheists circles when I see the word “spirituality” used because of the religious baggage that comes with that term. Me personally, I am absolutely fine with it. I am spiritual. Every time I look up at the stars and think of the processes and time it takes to make them; I am spiritual. As a fossil hunter, any time a dig up a piece of 55 million year old fossilized wood; I am spiritual. You see, to me, a spiritual experience is just chemicals in the body giving a person hit of dopamine. That’s not the most romantic way to put it, but it’s true. So why not find things that give you that dopamine hit that is based in reality and not myths? Don’t get hung up on definitions too much, but do try to live life to its fullest and make others in your life enjoy their times with you? Don’t know if this is the best explanation, but it is what it is and I hope you fine your legs after deconversion. I know I did ands been more fulfilling.

Things that cause harm always caused harm, whether or not it was 1000 years ago or yesterday. The social acceptability of the harm in one era does not change the objective facts of the harm. Having sex with immature humans is harmful. Always was. The slavery argument fails in the same respect. Making humans property is harmful. Always was.
@reefhog

Yes. The idea that you can argue that these things being subjectively moral in the past, but not in the present, somehow can’t be blamed on religious doctrine, is laughable. Religious doctrine is obviously authored by humans, with no gods involved. Surely an objectively moral god would never allow immoral practices to happen, from the very beginning, and certainly wouldn’t allow it to be doctrine.

Of course, it is almost impossible to comprehend faith by reason and intellect, though both attributes are complimentary to faith. Honesty and truth are to be revered and these are not in any way determined by our feelings. Debunking belief suggests a sense of superiority on the part of the one doing the debunking. By what authority is reason the way to understanding? Despite there comments I enjoyed listening.

So interesting to me, the evident struggles people have in their relationships with religious belief. Although raised in a very religious family, I can't say that I ever took it seriously or believed the claims of the church. I simply never internalized any of the dogma. My parents were wonderful people. They were moral, ethical, and tolerant. I'd like to think those life ways became a part of me. But their beliefs in the supernatural? Not one bit.
@Blackadder75

it's very rare to have such parents that are ok with the children not believing and at the same time are perfectly in harmony with their own faith. my parent are somewhat the same, very nice people, same qualifications as you give... I never believed any of it, like you. But as an adult I learned why they actually believe, (from a youth with trauma) and it comes with a lot of negative things. So even if they seem to be ok with it (child not believing) it can still cause all kinds of problems for them, they can start doubting and their whole word can collapse For me that meant I could not really talk about them on the fundamental things , because I became afraid I would harm them. So here you have another example how even in an seemingly ideal (tolerant) situation, this religious belief can lead to struggles.

Adam has it wrong! Not all muslims are literate about the Quran. In southeast Asia and in my home as a muslim child, all of us could recite (Arabic text and memorising) but none of us was ever taught the meaning, - we even had a Maulvi Sahib, an immigrant Arab. Just as well - thats what I think now. Only the kindly Meccan the prophet was known to us. I certainly did not get the full blast of Quranic wrath and phobic violent approach to non-muslims and scientific impossibilities.

Nice conversation, but I don't think this man fully understands how Muslims think about Jesus. Muslims think Jesus is some sort of Messiah, but he's not Christian. Muslims think Jesus was Muslim! In fact, Muslims think we're all Muslims, which is why they call us "reverts." Muslims think Jesus will return, but when he does he'll be fighting for Islam against Christianity! The following passage describes what this Muslim Jesus will do. From Sunan Abi Dawud, Book 39, Hadith 34: _______________________________ Narrated Abu Hurayrah: The Prophet said: There is no prophet between and him, that is, Jesus. He will descend (to the earth). When you see him, recognize him: A man of medium height, reddish fair, wearing two light yellow garments, looking as if drops were falling down from his head though it will not be wet. He will fight the people for the cause of Islam. He will break the cross, kill swine, and abolish jizyah. Allah will perish all religions except Islam. He will destroy the Antichrist and will live on earth for forty years. Then he will die. The Muslims will pray over him.

Aussie all the way here. Anything not the "correct type" of christian was disadvantaged for a long time, slowly changing in places, but anyone who "looks muslim" is now labeled, by the same power group of christians, as terrorists. As far as I am concerned all religious extremists are terrorists, not necessarily bombings etc, but dangerous beliefs, while "basic" religious people, who are not pushing it at everyone, are people. Darn it Seth the least you can do when discussing Islam, the Quran and Muslims is to at least be informed about the subject. You sound unsophisticated and so unsure of yourself and the subject. The Arabic word علقة alaqa literally means a leach or something that clings. In the Quran that description is of the fetus when it attaches itself to the uterus wall a process called implantation. It is that simple. 23:12 We created man from an essence of clay 23:13 then We placed him as a drop of fluid in a safe place 23:14 then We developed that drop into a clinging form, and We developed that form into a lump of flesh, and We developed that lump into bones, and clothed the bones with flesh. Then We brought him into being as a new creationglory be to God, the best of creator 23:15 after this you shall surely die 23:16 Then you will be raised up again on the Resurrection Day. The question is then how did this man from the seventh century Arabia with no education whatsoever know the process of the creation of the human fetus? Think about it.

There was fairly sound medical knowledge in the Levant and Anatolia at that time, and I think Mohammed travelled to many of those areas with his future wife's caravan merchant business? Two verses of the Quran that contradict each other…-- Surah Al-Anbiya (21:98): “Indeed, you [disbelievers] and what you worship other than Allah are the firewood of Hell. You will be coming to [enter] it.” Surah An-Nisa (4:158): “But Allah raised him [Jesus] to Himself. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise.” Millions of Christians consider Jesus to be the God or the son of the God , according to the first verse, even if one Christian considers Jesus to be the God and worships him, that particular Christian and Jesus will be burned in hell. But the second verse says Allah took the Jesus with himself.
@BenM61

What don’t you finish citing the text of surah 21? Is that because the answer is stating you in the face? 21:98 Certainly you ˹disbelievers˺ and whatever you worship instead of Allah will be the fuel of Hell. You are ˹all˺ bound to enter it. 21:99 Had those idols been ˹true˺ gods, they would not have entered it. And they will be there forever. 21:100 In it they will groan, and will not be able to hear. 21:101 Surely those for whom We have destined the finest reward will be kept far away from Hell. Jesus even though he was worshipped as a god not because of his doing is exonerated because of his righteousness.
