Thanks for making this video. I was shocked in my college classes (specifically anthropology) when they said that overpopulation was really not an issue. It is an easy sell because the math on the surface makes sense. However, looking at population curves and the 5 stages of population growth, most developed nations are getting ready for a steep decline in birth rates (look at Japan). Kids are getting more expensive and more difficult to maintain for 1st world countries, but as developing nations continue to grow economically we will see booms in those populations. My prof said our world population will likely cap at 10 billion, which put my mind at ease a bit. Consumerism is still an issue, but it is very comforting that we will not be experiencing first world starvation and overcrowding in the near future. Eloquent vid with lots to think about :)

Thanks so much for watching! Indeed, I’ve seen the data from UN that suggests that the population growth will stagnate by 2050. The countries with emerging economies are going through the same stage of consumption and production that many European countries experienced in the 1970s with the environmental degradation being the result. I am not sure if the planet now can take the same thing happening again, but I am hopeful that ecosystems are resilient. The people, however, are not.

Well, Europe is facing a depopulatuon issue while Sub-Saharan Africa is facing a population increase.

That's almost exactly what I said, this is a nuanced view of modern demographic tendencies. My point is that overpopulation is a complex process involving many factors like increased human life span, ageing population, overconsumption and climate change, and cannot be blamed for any single nation or continent.

Overpopulation and overconsumption go hand in hand as issues, it is incorrect to say that purely overpopulation causes environmental issues but a growth in population especially in developed countries certainly has an impact when combined with overconsumption.

I agree that there is definitely a nuanced view required when discussing this issues. However, have you heard of the Earth Overshoot Day? If you check breakdown per country, many developing counties reach planer overshoot day later in the year, since this index measures an average consumption per capita. For years, Indonesia has been in the end of the list to reach the overshoot day, and it’s a country with emerging economy and rapidly growing population. As a country, Indonesia’s impact is much higher, but the nation consumes much less resources comparing to other developing countries, and especially developed ones (US, Canada, countries of the EU).
