CJ Liu interviews Connie Zweig (conniezweig.com/) on her book "The Inner Work of Age: Shifting from Role to Soul". We discuss the elder role and how it's less about an age and more of mindset of being unattached to outcome, understanding the role of self-care and the soul, and to be in the spirit of service. As many approach retirement, we find ourselves with a bunch of expectations on our role but without a clear sense of our purpose. Additionally, we have no rites of passage. Connie describes being an elder as a developmental stage. It's when we define ourselves as something larger than ego. We are transpersonal and define ourselves as something more universal such as consciousness, spirit, or awareness. During this stage we are not in denial of death and we are not limited by time. In a way, we can wake up to our mortality and appreciate that life is short. Instead of worrying about how we look on the outside, we focus on our inner work and focus on soul. A life review process where we look at our soul mission and what is still needed for us to fulfill our soul mission so that we feel complete with our lives.
