I will always book a A380 over a B787 - it's a different league. Only one airline has configured the 787 correctly, JAL. Otherwise for the rest of us about 185M tall the 787 is just crap, the Qantas version especially. Yes, I live in Aus! My wife has today just flown from SYD on one of those wet leased Finnair A330s - she lands in 2 hrs and I'll be interested to see how that went. Hopefully good but then she connects with QF1 in about 5 hrs and just knows it will be so much better...

Qantas is wise to reactivate the A380 post covid, as demand for its long-haul capacities are needed, Australia to US, and to UK thro Singapore route. The flying Kangaroo also took 2 Finnish Air's A380, wet leased to cope with rising demands and as coverage, to its routes. No?

Love the a380....such a smooth quiet aircraft! Qf failed economy customers by not replacing the ancient entertainment screens in the recent refurbishment of thier a380s. Its a joke when compared to other carriers and the screens on qf a330-300 and 787.....qantas have little concern or care for economy class sadly.
@jfmezei

The 380 stays because even with the densified 777 coach cabin with low seat pitch and narrow 10 across seating, while it might come close enough to the 747, it still doesn't replace the 380. But this also means it is now a desirable aircraft for the coach passengers (the ones the airlines don't want) because coach seating in 380 is unequaled compared to newer aircraft like 787 777 with seats narrower than single aisle short haul aircraft. So as a marketing tool, I think both Emirates and Qantas realize that it gives them an edge with image of better service/comfort on long hauls than competing airlines on 787/777. I am not sure than the 380 is that inefficient in terms of fuel. But its 4 engines do cost more to maintain. On the other hand, having 2 787s to replace 1 380 still means you have 4 engines to maintain. And with no demand for the 380, I have to wonder if negotiated leasing rates makes the aircraft total cost of ownership competitive.

If airlines make their profits on business & 1st class passengers, then why not convert these huge planes to become 5* hotels in the sky?

The game changer with no WiFi! 😂😂 I said it before and I'll say it again. Qantas made a huge mistake switching to Airbus in general. The only good thing Alan Joyce did was recognizing the greatness of the 787, which has paid huge dividends, not just with Qantas, but with JetStar as well. Qantas should have ordered the 747-8, which would have been more beneficial, and while the A350 is good for Project Sunrise, a 787-9ER would have been better. And, the A380; should have been replaced by the 777-9, especially considering the fact that the A350 replacements also won't arrive for at least 3-5 years. I don't know what Airbus gave Alan Joyce, but he's screwed the airline long-term. Mark my words.

Airbus believed the very large aircraft (VLA) market would exceed 1000 sales. It believed it would dominate that market with a new aircraft. It figured, rightly, Boeing would not commit to a new aircraft and instead would develop the 747 with all the penalties that old design entailed. What Boeing knew was the VLA market was shrinking as airlines shifted away from hubs. It knew the 1000+ 747s built had been sold over three decades and many of the sales were replacements for earlier generation aircraft. It knew that freighters had become a growing part of 747 sales. In other words, the VLA market was much smaller than Airbus projected and A380 and 747-8i sales ended little more than quarter the figure Airbus used to justify the A380 launch. The losses Airbus suffered on the A380 must be massive. Qantas has had past form in having higher expectations of an aircraft than could achieved. Around 1980 it decided it would become an all-747 operator. Two 747SP were ordered to operate relatively short haul flights into Wellington NZ from the east coast of Australia. The 747SP only made sense on very long haul because it was a heavy aircraft for the number of passengers it could carry. Change of Qantas management the airline embrace the 767 and ETPOS as the future. Briefly. By the late 1990s it was firmly back in the 4-engine camp having rejected the 777 multiple times. Unlike every other airline that committed to the A380.
@jfmezei
20 күн бұрын
This "hub and spoke" thing is misnomer. What happened is that ETOPS was extended to remove any advantage to 4 engine aircraft, and the 777 was densified to be as uncomfortable as possible so it could replace the 747 and kill the 747. Remeber that there was a period where polar flights to Asia when Russia had opened up were only possible with 4 engined aircraft, then prefereable with 4 engines (aircraft can continue to next convenient airport, but with twin, would have to land at emergency landing strip in Russia's siberia). Any "point to poimt" had already been developped using 757, 767, 330 aircraft. But that still left a big market for 747 , especially for trans pacific.
