I also just picked up an old ground control and have been restoring it myself!! I found your series extremely educational for the restoration, and I didn't need to do an further research. I enjoyed watching and learning so much, I plan to watch a few more of your series! I also had the same problem as nismopar06 who commented below regarding the rear shock, so I found that section especially useful!! thanks again and look forward to seeing more!

Great job! I've got the 98 FSR Ground Control Comp in mango colour,. It has the Avid brakes, Judy forks, stout front hub and bottle cage at top rear of seat post tube so slightly different. Love it 🙂

Ahh nice, I actually really like the Mango coloured version, I wanted one badly as a teenager and if I spotted one in a size large I don’t think I could resist! One word of advice, I would throughly check the chainstay swing arm for cracks (most specifically the later models with the cast yoke, but this version is known to go as well).

@@MozOnBikes Thank you, Great advice. I'll give it a good going over. I bought it from the original owner and it's been stored in his studio/office most of its life. Even the original tyres with NO perishing. It's been used, But it's very clean overall. A nice find I think. It's a medium unfortunately but couldn't resist haha

That is an awesome job on your Blue 1998 Specialized FSR. Your videos are very professional and technically informative. I have a Mango 1998 Specialized FSR Comp that I purchased second hand from an older gentleman. Your restoration videos are going to help me restore my MTB. Thank you!

Ahh I actually really want the mango coloured version, I really wanted that as a teen after seeing it in a bike shop on holiday. If I come across a large mango ground control I think I’ll have to snag it!

It's definitely worth it to buy it when you find one. So far I have taken my 1998 Mango Specialized FSR comp on trails, mountains, roads, and my top speed 54 Kph downhill with no mechanical issues. The MTB frame sits high so you can see everything ahead safely and the suspension system is a 100 % awesome riding experience. I have never owned a better Specialized MTB than this one ❤.

That's amazing. I picked up a 1999 FSR comp in silver. Same rear shock. It blew a seal and lost all its oil and damping. I couldn't figure how to get in to it for the life of me. Ended up replacing it with an 165mm air shock which was a bit of frigging around to get the spacing and bushes right. Love your bike 😍 great series. Subbed 👍🏻

Hey 👋 Glad you enjoyed it, and like the finished version. I’ve got a hankering to do a few small tweaks, but I’ll save them all up for an update video later in the year. Did you manage to find one without a crack in the chainstay? Reason I ask is I’m on a Retro Specialized U.K. Facebook group which is really good, but blimey do these bike suffer with cracked chainstays around the brace next to the main pivot! Also a good group to join, I’m sure they’d be keen to learn about you shock update.

I really enjoyed this series. What i liked in particular was the way you explained your aesthetic choices and how well they worked. I think the seat post looks fine at that length. If you do add that frame protector mudguard thing, just use the velcro without the zip ties. I like the use of the drone for the final part.

Have that same bike, in a large frame. Traded a paintball gun for it back in 2000. The chainset is in need of replacing so figure I might as well do a complete teardown and rebuild while I'm at it. Now I'll just have to decide what components I want to go with.

Nice drone shots at the end. Thanks for sharing your experience with this bike, especially the fork. I'm about to attempt a rehab of a very similar Manitou fork and hearing what you had to say about it helped me out. Thanks!

I had a 97 FSR Ground Control Comp. In black, which was actually a flip flop paint from green, burgundy to black. I’d love to have it back. Still have an 01 FSR BIGHIT with the Marzochii Jr. T fork. Would really like to restore it!

Really they don’t need anything at all, the bushes should be fine alone. But on my bike, maybe due to age or misalignment there was a quite a bit of striction so when I rebuilt I used a tiny bit of general purpose lithium grease which seemed to make it a little more sensitive.

Great video and production quality. Like your component choice. I have worked on these bikes in the past. They were great back in the day. I picked one up last week that had a "Please take me" note attatched to it leaning on a tree. It appears to be all original exept for the tires. I have an Judy XL dual crown freshly serviced and a Coupe Deluxe shock, with the rebound adjust to use, and a ton of old components I have collected over the years. Too bad it is the mango color, so thinking of painting it but don't want to loose all the Specialized FSR graphics. Do you have any vids on painting frames? Finishing disassembly and cleaning this weekend. Thanks for the vid it is a great reference for re-assembly. It will be added to my stable of early 2000s Konas for my wife to ride and hopefully get her off the sporting goods store cheapy bike she is using.

Hi thanks for the kind comments, glad you enjoyed! Not too bad for an iPhone, iMovie and a cheapo drone. I actually really like the Mango colour version, I lusted after one as a teenager. I don’t really have any video on painting, I don’t have a good outdoor space without risking dusting my and my neighbours cars with over spray, and I’m sure my garage doesn’t have sufficient ventilation. It’s something I’m working on for the spring though 😉. Are your Judy XL the aubergine coloured version? That would look pretty cool on the Mango in my opinion.
@kenitsanoutragecandia3939

Not sure what it is called, or what color aubergine is, but it is dark purple-ish kind like many of the Judys in USA. I Really just love the blue color with the graphics on that bike. Maybey it will buff out good, but I have a 2001 Stinky Dee-Lux that is very similar color and The Mongo is overload to me LOL! Going back to see details on how to remove the main pivot, the large bushing is just spinning but I remenber you commenting on this. Also have gold Pro Taper bars for this. Love the Renthal Fat Bars, looks @@MozOnBikes 🔥

@@kenitsanoutragecandia3939 ahh sorry dude assumed you were over this side of the pond. Aubergine = Eggplant. I think that would look fire with the Mango for sure. Maybe purple anodised parts could look a little over the top, but maybe some red anodise could work well🧐. One thing I would recommend is carefully going over the yoke on the chainstay as on some version, actually the higher spec versions mostly they are really prone to cracking. It’s worth investigating before before putting too much time into the project.

Yup it is eggplant color. No cracks found yet. Think this guy never washed it exept with WD-40. Hand prints on the paint after washing. Purple componests wold look crazy good. Going low buck on this build, with stuff I already got, but you never know where a project is gonna end up. I remeber Installing a MRP long travel kit on a that lime greeen colored FSR with anodized blue stuff. Good times.@@MozOnBikes

I actually think there are better option out there for a gravel conversion, I’ve seen soo many of this and the generation after have cracked chainstays on the forums. Personally I’d go for a single pivot bike with disk mounts for a gravel bike.

I’m still having fun making videos, playing bike mechanic and telling a story of the bike and it’s details. KZitem seems to be in funk with my channel at the moment for some reason and I’m just not getting views. I can’t figure out why. But hey I’m enjoying it! Plenty more to come!
