honestly, it's surprising it took this long. part of it is increased income of people interested in those generations. what was a part time job when i was in college when i started collecting is now a professional career 20 years later. my buying power is roughly 100x what it was in college. Looking at prices of other collector hobbies, prices of retro games were quite reasonable if not downright cheap. it was only a matter of time until it caught up. i'm not saying WATA/HA is the right way to go, that was clearly a pump and dump, but $200-300 for rarer games that are excellent isn't that crazy for 20-30+ year old games

I entirely blame businesses like DKOldies and Lukie Games for turning cherished video game memories into a profit. I haven't been actively collecting retro games for a while, even around 2017 and later, so while 2020 absolutely DID NOT HELP, I think retro game prices were still screwed long before society shut down for basically a full year and then some. While I'm with everyone in hating this, I also think it was a long time coming. These games obviously aren't being made anymore and even without any widespread sickness changing the fabric of society, the number of people who wanted to collect retro games has always been going up while the supply of games out in the wild has been only going down (physical games rotting away from poor conditions and people flat out not wanting to sell their games). Heck, I started collecting back in 2006 and I was wondering how I could buy some absolute NES and SNES gems for $10-20 max with how cool they were and still are! These days, those exact same games are probably $40 on a good day. I truly from the bottom of my heart believe that if you just want to play a beloved game from your childhood or the past in general, emulation is the way to go. I understand the appeal of playing everything on official hardware on the real cartridges, but the hassle of setting up an old system on CRTs most people don't have and dealing with the reality that save batteries/memory cards can kick the bucket at any time make "the real deal" less and less attractive by the day. Emulation has come a long way and 99% of controllers are compatible with emulators, not to mention scanline filters getting so close to recreating the intended visuals that were never meant for HD displays. Don't get me wrong: I'll still collect games I'm truly passionate about, but collecting games to actually play is something I'll basically never do anymore

so many game collectors seem so surprised, that the supply of 1 dollar / piece attic finds isn't on unlimited supply.... those grannies can only get rid of their children's old games once, and then they're gone! most games are still going for less than what they were sold for as new, which isn't the case for many other collectible items.

I just don't like the prices. It hasn't stopped me, but I really don't care what they are worth. I didn't collect the games to sell them at a later point, I collected them to play them (which I decided to fully commit to by using my KZitem channel as a way to document me beating everything in my collection). At one point I thought about having complete collections, specifically for the Saturn, which I grew up with, and funnily enough I was the only person at school who had one, and that experience really influenced me to get all the games. Eventually, in college, I dropped the idea of collecting everything for the Saturn and just decided on collecting games that I may have had growing up and sold, games someone I knew had and enjoyed playing, games I played on a demo and really wanted but never got, games I heard about that were like really good but never had, or games I was interested in but could never get. While I was collecting in college, I had a small period of time where I obsessed over the prices, like I was prideful of the value, and I always told my collecting buddies what I paid for them vs what they were worth... then I kind of came to the realization that I honestly didn't care. I still keep track of the values, because it helps me help others wanting to get into collecting, and it also helps me get an idea on what I'm probably gonna spend on buying a new game, but I don't bother telling people what I paid for them, because then I'm kind of selling into the idea that collecting is only for the value, which is not what I want, I want the experience and the passion. My endgame with my collection is still kind of up in the air, but I don't see myself selling my collection, I don't care how bad the hobby gets, but I also don't care if everything I own becomes worthless, what I want to do is share my games with people, because then only one person has to buy the games, and everyone has the benefit to playing them. If I have a girlfriend, or maybe a kid at some point in the future, I can have an experience with them with my collection, and maybe they might not care as much as I do, but at least I'm trying to create an experience that could be cherished. As for friends, they come over all the time and we play random shit in the collection and we have fun, whether it's reliving memories, or getting excited over a game we haven't played before. And for everyone else, I'm trying to catalogue my collection here on KZitem, and sure I can't technically give everyone the experience of playing the game, but I can at least provide it visually (and yes, I am aware many MANY other channels exist that do the same thing, but it makes me feel better doing it as well and that's all that matters to me).

Basically what's happened to the Retro market is what happens to anything once enough people get into it; it's fallen to the thralls of capitalism. People now view these titles as not only something to enjoy for what it is, but to invest in and monetize and when that happened...well as the saying goes 'there goes the neighborhood'. I've been collecting for the better part of 20 years now and I've purged alot of my stuff, mostly for reasons of storage and because pretty much anything pre- HD console era can be emulated on a toaster.

Ebay is a blessing and a curse for me. When I first started collecting back in 2001, there were games I wanted which I could never find in all the pawn shops, charity shops and car boot sales. I then discovered ebay in 2004 and I was overwhelmed by all the selection: games I always wanted but could never find merely at the click of a few buttons and at very reasonable prices. Gradually though, hunting around my old haunts became both pointless (I already had nearly everything I wanted) and not fun anymore since everything was starting to disappear since everyone was selling online. Also, the prices are now beyond ridiculous. The only items I want now are all extremely rare and I usually only buy a few items every months because of this. The last really good 'haul' I got was back in 2019 for some very rare boxed C64 cartridge games which were dirt cheap and that was the first major find I'd had in a decade or so. I doubt I'll have anything like that again.

I agree that the retro game scene has gone downhill. I've sold my collections off twice but now building back up with my girlfriend. Her and I get games we're interested in together and have a collection together. She will play things she really resonates with and same with myself...but there are titles we play together also so we both can get a kick out of the story. I now only buy what I'm interested in. The whole jacking up prices for crappy games makes no sense to me at all. Also the whole "negotiating" prices with resellers has become annoying and like pulling teeth because they're not in it for selling people memories/ nostalgia but for the money. In a way it feels alot of that feel of magic and excitement has definitely faded away. The whole "reseller" stuff has gotten out of hand as well...people on KZitem who say they're gamers and love these titles and stories but continually flip product to just make a profit...just takes away from gaming in my opinion, just like how scalpers do with consoles. I have a friend now hacking and modding my NES, SNES and Sega Genesis Minis to add the entire libraries to them so I have everything at my disposal. I still have physical games from those systems but the titles that have a meaning to me. My dad always told me "You can't take it with you when you die" and at the end of the day it will either rot away, end up being someone elses or go into the trash...but memories will stay with you forever.

Ive been since trying to buy back that collection and man, amiibo hunting is not as fun as it used to be. Pretty much trying to buy any ssb4 amibo is going to run you at least $30 (give or take, depending on the character) , most of the time not even in the box. One of the main things driving up the prices of retro video games are the people who played those games as kids are now in their mid to late 30s early 40s and the games they played as kids are becoming nostalgic for them and so they are buying them up. Leading to high demand and cost for the games. Here lies the issue. They are not video game collectors so they'll buy an old system and a few games and after the nostalgia wears off in a few weeks to months they don't resell. They get put in a closet and forgotten about and taken out the market altogether. I'm 37 myself and I know I many people who did this exact thing. There are a few factors for this to back it up. One are the lockdowns. People were locked in their homes with nothing to do so rhey decided to take a trip down memory lane and relive better times. Another highlight to this are the mini consoles. Nintendo, Sega and Sony all knew the target audience for those systems and the demographics of the people who would buy them. People who grew up with the systems. I'm sure there are many other factors that go into the reasons for high retro gaming costs but the main one is first and foremost nostalgia.

There's absolutely no reason or excuse to raise their prices up. That's how much I really hope the bubble bursts about these ridiculously expensive prices plaguing the retro video game market. 😱😟

Listen, while I agree the prices are pretty expensive, it’s because MORE PEOPLE ARE INTO THE HOBBY. While collecting was niche for the longest time, it’s good to see more people appreciating the classics and finding hidden gems that have nearly been forgotten about entirely. Just because you have to pay an extra $10 on a game you wanted doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world.
@RedBandanaGaming

Extra $10 for a game? What bizzaro world do you live in? These games, especially N64 and GameCube, have gone up 10x + in price. That's far more than $10. You should really look into the prices first. I'm not talking about Xbox 360 games.

All I’m saying is that having more people who are invested in the hobby isn’t a bad thing. Sure the prices took a hit, especially with the GameCube, but most quality games are super affordable. On systems such as PS2, Classic Xbox, and even the SEGA Genesis games are still super affordable.

You are correct retro gaming use to be fun. Wata has caused a tremendous shift in the pricing of retro games. Also you see many videos by big KZitemrs getting all the great deals but they fail to mention that they live in big cities where game developers lived and worked so that is why this hard to find stuff is so plentiful because of their area. The normal average person will never find them so called great holy grails unless maybe it happens by chance. I'd also never sell my collection unless it would be paying bills or maybe keep from losing the house. Would be no way possible this day and time to collect the older stuff for the same price of what games cost today! My collection is valued at like $90,000.00 and counting so no way Id find it all again for under that price.Lastly gaming nowadays aint as fun because they're trying to control gamers making everything online so once them servers go down you lose how to play your games. Most games released today are unfinished and unplayable because being released to early and not finished at all hardly. I really dont look foward to gaming into the future because it will be "online only" and will need a subscription monthly/yearly just to play them. Gaming isnt what it use to be and its only going to get worse my opinion.

It's still fun. I mean, the prices suck balls sure. However acquiring a game I've long sought after is still satisfying. I have an end goal, and I'll be damned if I can't get there because of some high prices. Just today had a $50 PS1 game come in the mail. Sure, I could have picked it up for $15 a few years ago if I'd known about it but hey, still got it. Only so many of those left on my list. I'm in it to win it, not to give up. When I'm done with collecting, it'll be because I achieved what I set out to do. Game collecting needs to have a purpose. If it's just for something cheap to do on the weekend sort of take whatever you can find, then yeah that's over. If you seek out specific things because that is the stuff you want, then it can still be satisfying, if expensive. It's not 2009 anymore, and I'm okay with that. It was fun to just buy things for cheap back when I knew very little and had very little, but it's kind of pointless now. I'd much rather seek out exactly what I want, in the condition I want, than just stumble over a random box of cheap games that just are whatever they are. To each their own.

Best comment right there Collecting needs a purpose. It needs an end. If not, its just hoarding. You think about a theme, a generation, a specific console or a genre (or something else). A collection needs a pattern, something that sticks all the pieces together. Then you research, and finally you make a final list of what your want you collection to be in the end. And then the hunt begins. And yes, its still fun. You just need a direction, and a purpose in collecting, something a lot of collectors lack, sadly.

So what I did after I sold every game I bought a emulator player where I can change controllers on it when I feel like having the classic feel I still have every console controller on Bluetooth or usb and the great thing about the emulator player is that non of the games have problems different from cartridges, cds . I kept my ps4 but just like all consoles out of 140 games I own on the ps4 I only like 3 of them so if I did buy all these games at full price I would’ve been pissed because most of them sucks oh yeah collecting games also takes up to much space that’s another reason why I didn’t like it anymore but yeup that’s my story on why I don’t collect stuff anymore .

I like what you say, and I feel the same way. But the good news is that there are other ways to play all these games today (everdrives, emulation...). The boxes are just relics of the past, it's nice to have them at home like a small museum (or shop) but it's not obligatory.

While I love eBay and it's how I amassed my very rare collection of systems and games I think eBay is one of the biggest reasons. People can easily look up what something is going for so it's hard to get a deal on anything anymore. It's too convenient. Popularity of the culture as well as attention it's gotten on KZitem can also be to blame. With the advent of digital media rather than physical games being pushed in retail stores it's only gonna get worse unfortunately. I'll still go to gaming conventions as something to do but the last three years I've left empty handed.

Been collecting since 2005. I never went to garage sales or thrift stores. Ebay and mom and pop stores were my only options. I was collecting snes games and buying them off ebay. I saw prices on snes start to skyrocket. I bought as many as I could. They were still expensive back then. So when prices got to high I moved onto other systems. I started buying PS1 and genesis games. They were dirt cheap. Prices started to skyrocket on that stuff so I moved on the gamecube and ps2. I was always one step ahead of price jumps. I have about 1100 games. My collection is curated to my taste in games. I have very little filler. I put so much effort into my game collection I can't bring myself of sell it. They'll have to burry me with it.

Awesome! Being ahead of the curve must feel great in retrospect. When I was younger, garage sales were a big way of snagging games. I would go with my grandparents on weekends and get NES and SNES. (I don't remember if I mentioned that in the video. It's been a while since I made this.) But finding games in the wild for low prices was always fun. I did buy a few games here and there off ebay in the 360 era. Good times. The market changes and that's life. Keep up the collecting as long as you still find it fun. 👍🏻

I remember buying panzer dragoon saga on clearance for like 20 bucks at toys r us, gave it to a friend now I see it go for hundreds, yes it was a great story, graphics at the time were amazing but not what people charge now days is ridiculous. Or when I went to Portland gaming expo and was told earthbound is a rare game and almost every vendor had one to two copies, rare huh, but it matters if someone is gonna buy them , to reach their own I guess

Same thing games here. It's funny how a game the Super Metriod goes for around $70 but every game store has three of more copies just sitting there. The same goes for Link to the Past and Killer Instict. They have tons of copies and claim rarity is why the prices are what they are. I also did something similar about 10 or so years ago with a friend of mine, but I game him a CIB copy of Nights into Dreams. So I feel you on that.

When it comes to online and stores many people are greedy and at times rude. But there is one store but it's far that's the only good place for retro games near me. The people are always chill and gives me deals. I hope retro games goes down in price and deals become more common so new gamers don't lose interest in these amazing classic games. Cool video. ^_^

It's really unfortunate what has happened to the retro gaming market. It's in a chokehold by flippers who refuse to let go. There are still deals out there but they're getting bought up by flippers and very quickly which sucks. I know every market has flippers and it was only a matter of time before gaming got caught in their clutches but it sucks that games are now on the rise and some are upward towards 300+ and like you said unobtainable for most people, and I know emulation is a thing and I have nothing against emulation, that's now where most people will have to play those expensive games but there's just something nice about having a physical copy and playing on original hardware and sometimes emulation has it's issues too whether it be glitches, audio issues, constant crashes, etc that are near non-existent on original hardware. Also notice how it's a US issue. PAL, and JP games are DIRT cheap but for whatever reason NA games are the stupidly expensive ones. I'm not upset that gaming has become more popular but sometimes I wish the people who don't really care for gaming and are only here to make a profit move on to something else, like Pokemon cards or something, lmao.

$300 is not a lot for a nice collectible, which is what these items now. the hobby got bigger and thus all the low budget people who've been around for years are getting muscled out. the prices are comparable or even much cheaper than the comics, toys, diecast, gigposter, vintage computers, vintage home audio, records, etc. lets not even compare it to big boy hobbies like golf, scuba, skiing, boats and real cars. btw, flippers have been around since games have been, they used to be called stores. the internet killed most B&M stores but in their place rose entrepreneurial people doing the leg work going around finding/buying the games and then selling online to a wider audience.

the key thing that is frustrating is during the era of when everything is nostalgically hot right now I couldn't afford to have more than one console. I wasn't lucky enough to be the person that could have both a PS3 and Xbox360 for example. I had to trade-in or sell off existing equipment to put towards a new console or games. Now, being in a better financial position to have retro systems and games, the market is ridiculous. Trying to re-buy something I used to own and had to trade in for money to get a new console or buying games for a console I never had the opportunity to own back in the day are massively priced and simply not worth it to do so depending. I'm also doubly screwed in that the games I like to get for a given console end up being the rare gems or rare series (like SH or Castlevania or what have you) that go for 100s of dollars if not 1000s now a days. Perfect example, used to own Eternal Darkness and a GameCube, I'd love to re-get that system and that game but $300-$400 for just that? The price of a PS5 basically? Yeah, no. I can't justify that. So, once again, poorer collectors and people that don't care about the collecting aspect but just want to actually play something they now have the ability to perhaps buy in their adult life, they are screwed by the hoarders and the flippers who drive the prices up. It's a vicious cycle and I have no answer because it's happened in other collector markets, comics, cards, toys, etc. It ends up getting ruined.

I'm not really a super collector, but I like to get games I know, and games that look pretty. Recently I paid like $100 dollars for Cotton 2 (Sega Saturn), its a game I really wanted and was not gonna get for any cheaper than that (guy had 10 copies and the one I bought was the last one), You won't see me buying something like Wayne's World (nes) cause it's not appealing to me, but rather I would get something like TMNT 2 or Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest (which both are still very affordable) for Nostalgia reasons, and are games I like, or Super Mario 64 or Kirby 64, Both for the same reasons, what I'm trying to say is that I Think it's better to be a partial collector than a full on collector, get games you really want instead of completing your collection.

Hunter in helena, mt. The thrill of the hunt is still there. But if u look at it this way.. between the rarity of good priced games.. is like getting a wining lotto ticket.. small chances but huge rewards. Being able to walk away.. was a huge barrier for me. But, the thrill of the hunt is extremely harder to find good games at a good price.

I don’t see a problem with pricing as anything vintage thats highly desirable and becoming rarer usually does get pricey in time. I do hate the cheapskates that want a deal on vintage games… it’s the nature of the beast. It’s like going to the proud owner of a vintage car and wanting a deal and making a KZitem video of the steal you made.

I vaguely remember that, but prices didn't get ridiculous that long ago. I think they started to go up in 2016, but skyrocketed in 2020. I was still finding some epic finds in 16 and before. The economy was so good then, so many people had extra cash flow to put into other things and retro gaming was one of them.

People ruin everything for others. EVERY collector community seems to be hit by the same shit - scalpers, resellers, low stock that doesn't get replenished, limited runs on production, small windows for official purchase, companies pushing too much online exclusivity, etc. I see ppl who collect cards, shoes, toys, games, etc ALL discuss the same issues. It's just...disheartening even with the most modest and mild of expectations. Like, all I wanna be able to do is go on a hunt in the wild here and there and the hit rate for ANYTHING is like, less than 10%. And this is a reality for ALL kinds of toys - figures, plushies, cars, Lego...it effects every damn strata of toy, lol. I gave up toy collecting before I even really began due to this shit. It's not fun. It's not easy. It's not welcoming.

I love how the gaming community is missing the obvious. More people interested in a hobby will automatically jack up the price of that hobby. KZitem is 100% the reason why game collecting went mainstream. Now the KZitemrs all make videos complaining about the beast they created lol I’ve been in the mix for over a decade. The OG’s all have the games they want. It’s also likely they got them for a fraction of their current value. You can still collect smart to this day. It’s just not easy anymore. Wahhh wahhh wahhh lol

Why do people blame 2020 for everything? Retro game prices have been skyrocketing for years long before 2020. I noticed the shift in prices in 2015. The reason the are skyrocketing is cause you have these "graded" companies artificially inflating the prices.

Its not only problem with Retro games... unfortunately with Retro Videocards too... in 2020 i have found much more vintage graphic cards most costs 5-15€ uit was totaly ok. But since 2022 the prices increased and the vidoecars can't be found so often anymore so it becomes rare.... and this is one reason why the prices getting so high... very sad... but i also guess its the problem that more and more people collecting old game sold hardware like videocards and maybe there are some miners... people who buys many old game sor hardware althhought they don't need this... only to sell them for much highe rprices or waiting many years till the value will increase and they can make much more money...
