The 1995 DOS version (included with the GoG purchase) is the one you want. Steer clear of the 1998 Windows re-release (also included in the GoG purchase. It can be confusing.) 1998 gimped the music tech and broke the torpedos, modding is required to partially restore DOS version's quality.

The game will only auto-config about three buttons on your joystick for you. For the rest, make your own custom joystick scheme with JoyToKey: joytokey.net/en/
I mapped "match speeds" "change weapons" and "toggle laser link" and the next/prev targets to my extra joystick buttons. You can do whatever.
