Thank you for this excellent tutorial. I havea question however if you would be kind enought to point me in the right direction? I am currently running Hyperspin on Nvidia Shield, a rom I want to play will launch in Retroarch via 'Load Content' and using the standard 'Mame' core, not Mame 2010 etc, however if I try to launch from the game from the Hypespin wheel it will not work and just goes back to the wheel. All other roms on the wheel use the 'Mame 2010' core but the game I want to play will not launch using that core in Retroarch. I can't seem to find an Override option if I launch the game in Retroarch by going into the quick menu. Am I missing something obvious? Thank you for any help...
@otggaming3180
9 ай бұрын
I'm glad you found it helpful, thank you :) When you load this particular ROM from RetroArch does it always load correctly now using the 'Mame' core? If so, I think that would indicate that Hyperspin is telling RetroArch to ignore the default core for the game and to use the Mame2010 core when launching. I've never used Hyperspin, but I use a similar frontend called Launchbox and, when needed, it allows you to specify which RetroArch core to use on a per-game basis for situations like these. I'm wondering if Hyperspin has something similar. I know this is an old thread, but it seems like it is a possibility: forums.libretro.com/t/integrating-hyperspin-and-retroarch/718

@@otggaming3180 Thank you for responding! Ok so yes all other Mame roms load up with the 'Mame 2010' core. I actually have Lauchbox box but oddly found it didnt always work with this rom correctly though I didnt realise I can force a core per game. That would solve the issue I guess but I use Hyperspin as it comes generally fully configured in terms of artwork and front end...nice and shiny looking! I will take a look at that thread and see where it goes from there. Failing that I will revert back to either Launchbox or Arc Browser as I hear the latter is also very well regarded, though it requires time to setup. I think ultimately I am going to be using my Nvidia Shield Pro as it is the center of my entire home media setup. Whatever I discover I will repost here as well so thank you again!

@@otggaming3180 haha love it, 2nd best song he had! But yeah here’s a typical scenario. Trying to setup retroarch to play the following (as an example): NES and SNES regular games and lightgun games. Regular games need: standard controller layout that I wanna map and maybe a bezel / overlay. Lightgun games require a particular bezel / overlay, shader, and a different controller for p1 and p2 (some super scope, some justifier for example) and the buttons mapped for that lightgun game. That’s what I’m struggling with. Getting a little confused by some of the directory structure and what values can be in the global vs core vs content vs game cfg / rmp / opt / whatever file 😎 Any tips are welcome bud, thanks again.
@otggaming3180
Жыл бұрын
@@oleschoolgamers 2nd best song no doubt 👍 If I'm understanding correctly, I'm thinking the best way to keep it clean and simple would be by using content directory configuration files. Put the regular games in the main console folder ("NES" or "SNES") and then create a "Lightgun" subfolder for all of the lightgun games. Then, with a regular game running make your controller layout changes in Quick Menu>Controls and then save a content directory remap file. In the latest version of RetroArch with default folder settings it will save the remap file to Retroarch\config emaps\[core name]\[content directory name].rmp Next, if you decide to do a bezel or overlay, configure those settings and then create a content directory override in Quick Menu>Overrides. This will create an override config file at Retroarch>config>[core name]\[content directory name].cfg Lastly, you can set a shader at Quick Menu>shaders and then from the shaders menu save a content directory shader preset and that file will be created at RetroArch\config\[core name]\[content directory name].slangp or .glsl depending on your video driver. Repeat the above steps with a lightgun game running and essentially you'll end up with two sets of config files for that console - one set for lightgun games on that system and one for all of the regular games. So as an example, if you followed the above steps and you were using mesen as your NES core, with your your regular NES roms in a folder named "NES" and your lightgun games in a subfolder named "Lightgun," your config file structure would look like this. RetroArch\config emaps\mesen\NES.rmp (stores the control settings for all of your regular NES games) RetroArch\config\mesen\NES.cfg (stores bezel or overlay settings for all of your regular NES games) RetroArch\config\mesen\NES.slangp or. glsl (stores the shader settings for your regular NES games) RetroArch\config emaps\mesen\Lightgun.rmp (stores the control settings for all of your NES Lightgun games) RetroArch\config\mesen\Lightgun.cfg (stores bezel or overlay for all of your NES Lightgun games) RetroArch\config\mesen\Lightgun.slangp or. glsl (stores the shader settings for your NES Lightgun games) Hopefully, that's not too convoluted. Feel free to let me know if any or even all of it makes no sense 🤣

Thanks for the kind words! I use DS4Windows on occasion and I was running into a similar issue awhile back, but it wasn't every time I started RetroArch. It would only be on occasion and it would fix itself if I restarted my machine. It eventually cleared up and unfortunately I have no idea what did it. Is your DS4Windows updated to the latest version? I see the latest version is 3.2.7 One other thing is that I think I remember reading that the combo of Steam, DS4Windows & RetroArch can do some weird things with controller drivers, so if you have Steam installed you might try completing exiting it before you start RetroArch and see if the problem persists.

@@otggaming3180 Awesome reply, thank you. I don't use Steam and do keep DS4 up-to-date. It's frustrating, but I think it is due to Windows, DS4, RA, and LB/BB all trying to define the controllers. I've been trying to configure the keyboard for N64 games, but unfortunately the overrides don't save global input settings, and the per core remaps are only meant to be configured via a controller. This is pretty bad and frustrating for those of us who don't have a controller available and makes setup much more harder than it should be, and i have no alternatives because the only decent N64 emulator that works decently on my PC is a libretro core that only works on Retroarch.
@otggaming3180

If I'm understanding correctly what your after, what I would do is load up an N64 game, go to Settings>Input>Port 1 controls and then map each input to your desired keyboard key. After testing it out and making adjustments as necessary, you can then go to Quick Menu>Overrides and Save a Core Override and if working correctly those same keyboard controls should now load for every N64 game that uses that core.

I'm still confused about the hierarchy, which one is the highest? You showed the load order but I don't know what that means, is the first one in the order the most powerful one or the last one? I need different resolutions and scalings for just DS, so should I just use game overrides for each game? Or can I use a directory override and then use the game override on individual games? Which one takes over?
@otggaming3180

The order goes like this as far as what takes precedence: 1) Game Override 2) Directory Override 3) Core Override 4) RetroArch.cfg So for DS I would use either a core or directory override to cover the settings that will apply to all of your DS games, and if you need different settings for specific DS games you can use a game override for those specific games.

@@8-bit_Informer Okay, I got you. Thanks for the clarification! You can accomplish what your after in the Settings>Input>Port 1 controls area as you described. After you've made the control changes, the next step would be to open quick menu>Overrides>Save Game Overrides, and that should capture your input changes into a separate config file for tapper. An alternative way to do it and the way I personally prefer is to use a controller remap file. With Tapper running in RA, you would do the following: 1) Go to Quick Menu>Controls 2) Select "Port 2 Controls" and change the "Mapped Port" to 1 (this will make your second input device also control player one). 3) Now disable all of the controls in this Port 2 area by setting them to "-" except for "down." Map the "B" button to that 4) Optionally, you can go to Port 1 controls and and disable the b button there, so that only down on player 2 operates the tap. 5) Test it out and makes sure everything is working as intended and if so, go back to Quick Menu>Controls>Manage Remap Files and save a Game Remap and that will make it so that this controller setup will only load when you're playing Tapper. I prefer button remaps this way because I find it a little easier to troubleshoot specific control issues when they're in a separate remap file rather than with the rest of the config settings in retroarch.cfg and its overrides. Hope the above makes sense. Let me know how it goes :)
