Where are you at Montreat? So good of you to call, President Richard Nixon says in a secret recording now made public. He's speaking to Reverend Billy Graham. They were powerful friends for decades. Our media partner, Carolina Public Press, says the recordings were released by the Nixon Presidential Library today. That's the thing about Billy Graham. He always calls when it's good or bad, Nixon says. You know how I love you, Graham responds.President Nixon leaned on the Reverend Billy Graham in the worst of times.Jon Elliston of Carolina Public Press says the phone chat with Graham was in April of '73, after addressing the nation for the first time about the Whitewater scandal that defined his presidency.I want to talk to you from my heart about a subject of deep concern to every American, President Nixon told America that night. An hour later, Billy Graham called to console the president, Elliston says.Mr. President, Reverend Billy Graham, the recording begins. Thank you, Nixon says.I wanted to reach into my screen and hug you, Graham tells his friend after the speech that will go down in history. This conversation will serve as testament to just how close these men were, especially during Nixon's hardest times, Elliston says. Your sincerity and humility asking for prayer, had a huge impact, Rev. Graham tells Nixon on the phone. Really Billy? Nixon replies.I'm telling you the truth, Graham says. This is one of the most telling incidents in which the preacher ministered to the president, Elliston points out.So comfortable, he cursed twice and apologized. So you know they'll continue to slash away, but what the hell, Nixon says before correcting himself. What the heck.It becomes clear that Nixon was increasingly drunk, says Elliston. Graham appears to have caught him in the middle of that progression.Interestingly, on a night when the president only took calls from key advisors, Nixon made sure to take the Reverend's call.
