I have a neuromuscular condition called myasthenia that causes drooping eyelids. Somehow no one questioned it my entire life! I actually have a very severe case where I'm lucky to be alive, too. All my other symptoms were just dismissed as a combination of laziness and anxiety. (I'm white, but everyone just assumed I'm not expressive, even though the rest of my face will make somewhat theatrical exaggerated expressions, which itself is a symptom because muscles that work better will overcompensate for the near or fully paralyzed ones)
@ak5659
Жыл бұрын
My eyelids droop but aren't paralysed. I'm not sure I want to have it checked out because so far ALL of my psychosomatic conditions of my youth (thanks mom & dad!) have turned out to be 100% physical. My parents were the ones with the psychostuff, apparently.
@vaughnhaney7020

@@ak5659 Similar deal here with the parents... Same issue causes dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) which means I could never take pills. After years of my parents trying to punish me into doing it and young me insisting I literally couldn't, now I could take pills immediately after starting treatment, go figure Regarding the muscle paralysis in myasthenia: It's not the type of paralysis one usually thinks of. The muscles usually do respond slightly, they're just extremely weak and get exhausted/sore absurdly easily. Exercise makes them worse and it often targets muscles that one usually doesn't think of (like the eyes/face, diaphragm, internal muscles, etc) but can also target more obvious muscles (my legs get it pretty bad). The "partial" nature of the paralysis can make it easy to miss as people are often dismissed as lazy or otherwise "just like that"

Yeah the eyelid surgery some asian women get for cosmetic purposes was actually developed to help people with this condition (like breast augmentation was invented for cancer patients). I can relate in a way, where prejudice caused a medical condition to go overlooked. As a kid I was obese, and every time I tried to exercise to lose weight, I would be constantly out of breath. Coaches, teachers, doctors, and my parents always told me "well fat people get a stitch in their sides and get tired easily." After years of struggling against it I lost over 100 lbs and went from over 300 to just over 200, but wasn't gaining any stamina and still couldn't bike more than a couple miles. Since I had lost the weight, the doctors no longer had "well you're fat" as an excuse for my poor breathing, actually ran the tests, and boom, it turns out I've had asthma my entire life and been needing an inhaler all along.
@TallulahFoxxx

I was similar but I wasn’t overweight. In school PE, I was always dead last. Even the really overweight kids beat me by a country mile. I was just told I was “unfit” 🙄 Every time I did anything physical, I would be out of breath almost immediately to the point of pain. I was pale, listless and climbing stairs made me incredibly sore and weak. Well, age 16 I was diagnosed with Pernicious Anaemia (an autoimmune condition) and it turned out I was literally dying slowly 😂🤦🏼♀️😭 I got treatment and improved a lot but I was still having breathing issues. Everything was either blamed on me needing MORE exercise or the PA 🙄 But get this: my brother and my dad both have chronic and severe asthma. It never occurred to the doctors the condition runs in families. I also have hay fever and eczema which is considered hallmarks that go hand in hand with asthma 😂🤷♀️ At age 30 - yes, 30 - I was finally diagnosed with asthma and those inhalers changed everything within a few weeks 👏🏻

@@TallulahFoxxx Crap. I'm T1 diabetic, and that sometimes comes with other autoimmune diseases, and that sounds like me. Really pale, diagnosed with asthma, and was always skinny, but 'unfit' even before thee T1 dx. Everytime I go in for bloodwork every 3 or 4 months, my doctor mentions my anemia, and he's given me prescription vitamins for it, but it hasn't gotten better. It's been years. But it could just be the diabetes and regular anemia, I mean, I'm 33, wouldn't I be dead already? This isn't the best place to get diagnosed, doctors here are bad about missing even simple things, so I never know if they missed something because I didn't complain about it enough.

My best friend looks full white, we are both czechs, but her family comes from Slovakia, Hungary, and Ukraine, but aparently one of her ancestor way way in the past was Mongolian, because her and her dad both have really narrow eyes. Because she doesn't look asian, most of the people she has met have either made fun of her, or been asking her why she never opens her eyes, and they just wouldn't understand, that she doesn't hold them half closed, it's just how they are. Like, when she laughs, her eyes just completely disapear. I find it pretty and something that makes her even more memorable, but she has told me that once when she was in elementary school, she wore a sign on her shirt for a week, that said "Don't ask me, yes, I can see.", which is pretty sad.

@JustAdude291

Ptosis is drooping of the eyelid, meaning it sags down. Typically from trauma or weakness to the muscles or damage to nerves that control the face. Unless you had a stroke or have a neuromuscular disorder like myasthenia gravis, you probably don't have it. It would also be pretty obvious if you were born with congenital ptosis.
