An unboxing and review of Revell RAF Tornado GR.1, 1/72 scale model kit, ref: 04619. Also included is a look at the Aires Tornado resin and photo-etch upgrade set (for IDS, but works with GR.1) and War Birds "Snoopy Airways" aftermarket decals for Operation Granby.
The kit has five main sprues (three for the Tornado, and two for armament and pods), plus two sprues with clear parts. The moulding is crisp with recessed panel lines and a very good amount of detail - some of which so fine it will likely be lost when painted.
One of the sprues showed flash (but not enough to worry about) so care will be needed when building to clean up any excess plastic.
There is a large decal sheet print with plenty of stencils, though the carry film did look a little thick and may be obvious on the smaller decals.
The instruction book is very concise and easy to follow.
I also looked at the Aires Cockpit upgrade set (designed for German IDS Tornados, but fine for RAF GR.1s) which contains resin cockpit, instrumentation, two Martin Baker ejector seats, plus a small sheet of photoetch and acetate film for the HUD and dials.
I will also be using Vallejo paints and markings for the "Debbie" plane in the "Snoopy Airways" fleet used in the Gulf War (using the Air Birds aftermarket decals).
Inspiration is taken from issue 1 of Take Off magazine (published in the 1990's).
