Welcome to our newest weekly feature, #TidbitTuesday where the @MassDCR Office of Cultural Resources shares some facts about the agency's properties, history, and preservation efforts! Be sure to click through to IGTV for this 6:45 video of Revere Beach from c. 1930.
DID YOU KNOW? Revere Beach Reservation was the first ocean beach acquired for public use in America, all the way back in 1896. Designed by landscape architect Charles Eliot and architect William Austin, the beach was extremely popular, with an estimated 45,000 visitors on opening day! Amusement parks and dance halls soon cropped up adjacent to the reservation. Revere Beach Reservation was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2003.
So check out this clip of Revere Beach Reservation from around 1930 which shows some slice of life activities and demonstrations from the era such as: the bathhouse, the police station, boat races, and an excellent shot of The Cyclone -the roller coaster that existed from 1925-1969!
And be sure to check back next week to learn more about DCR from the Office of Cultural Resources!
