If you try dagger vs longsword you will find a reason to use reverse grip. If you have a rondell dagger and use it in reverse grip resting against your arm it is still possible (but really hard) to parry cuts from a longsword while if you hold it normally it is likley the person will be able to smash right through your parry (and even if you manage to stop it the and pain is no joke). So reverse grip parry could be a better choice but it's super nisch.

It can be useful for larping depending, especially since crossguards aren't particularly common on the field. The grip of the cloth and the lack of hard hitting (causing lots of deflections and bouncing which translate into quick twirls and arcs.) means that you don't need the same strength in your wrist, especially since your own weapon can't hurt you.

Honestly, reverse grip is really mostly a rondel thing, at it really is because of the caviat that is said IN THIS VIDEO: in close quarters, being able to hook staff between your weapon and your hand is valuable, as being able to stab in a non foeward direction. Great short as always!

Another issue with your reverse grips is strength and control. The natural funnel helps keep control motion in your favor where the reverse grip with any real force applied can send your blade into your own arm. Sure it's not cut off but it's also not safe. P.S. I hope you all have a fantastic day and stay safe.

That said, every dagger ever--with thr exception of sail daggers--has been designed to easily switch, both in weight distribution and geometry. So if you're in a standard grip and it turns into a grappling situation, boom, reverse grip. If you're in a grapple and manage to get out of it, boom, standard grip.

@Drew Taylor i see one special and very limited scene that it would be practical to reverse grip takedown. But you need a short and strong blade. If you get behind him and stab frew the heart from the front, he will fall in your arms and the grip of the knife can be used as a pulling handle since it should interlock in the ribbs. So you can easily drag him a way

The only viable usage for reverse grip I can spontanously think of would be to hide the blade behind your arm. I use it for the psychological aspect. I can flip it in my hand quickly into a normal grip usually mid strike or right before. This gives the illusion of lack of attack. Also as an off handed weapon you use the main weapon to hold the opponents weapon while the dagger slides home. Also an overhand strike downward is better in a reverse grip.
