I just picked up a 2020 WRX Limited and I love it. The rawness that a lot of people complain about is what makes it a great car to me. It's the last of the old school affordable sports cars and the AWD makes is that much better. ALso, I agree about the owner stigma of the WRX. I'm 50 and I plan to keep my car mostly stock except for maybe a stage 1 tune eventually, to eliminate the timing pulls. I want to get at least 10 years out of this car, so I don't want to stress the engine by pushing it too far like most tuners do. Besides I mostly like the car the way it is...I don't think it's missing a whole lot.

WRX or STI what is the difference but the STI has more power. There the same car since 2002 for the most part and that is why there awesome. If you know how to MOD a 2002 then a 2018 will be cake. But look at the bigger picture the after market is strong with the WRX and STI because nothing for the most part needs to change. I just wish they would bring back a hatch, which prevents me to leave ford ST and move to another WRX which I would love, just space is more of a need then AWD. But the GOLF-R is being refreshed so I'll have to see what the future holds. However, I would get a STi before an RS, TS and Turning RAD is garbage not to mention the self explosion of the 2.3 block in the RS. Twice, Ford replaced my buddies block within 6K, WTF Ford. Ok, later bitches.

I didn't have to drive the 18' WRX to notice the timing pulls too being in the passenger seat. My current 11' Prius pulls harder and doesn't have any timing issues. I've owned 2 WRXes and 1 STI in the past and the first thing I told my co-worker who owned the 18' WRX is to go Cobb. That's the biggest upgrade that I recommend doing above everything else. He doesn't think a $600 game controller would make the car that much better. Well, he doesn't know enough about his car.

Love your vidz and love your opinion. Quite fair. My thoughts on the current WRX (I have a 2017): Stock tune sucks. Should come as a Cobb AP already installled. If I had no option other than to drive this car stock I would have got rid of it. Trans is clunky. I have the STI short throw and I still feel like I'm driving a "deuce and a half." (Old military truck...showing my age). AC doesn't seem top notch nor does the defroster. I am pretty simple, but something I noticed. Car responds well to tunes and aftermarket parts. I think once you have hit that 325 HP mark you will have to determine whether you want to overhaul that engine, be satisfied with what you have, or move on. Love the car. I enjoy mine.

I like simplicity. Instead of fancy interior and advanced smart technology, I prefer something like the wrx which you twist the key and the engine always starts, and when you put it in gear it aways runs like a beast regardless of what's going on around it. Sure maybe spoiled teens around my age won't understand and will think that I'm either broke or stupid, but all I'm looking for is authenticity. I'm not attracted to fancy interior or luxury, instead I want to experience that last bit of fun and realism from a car while I can, before authenticity completely fades away as materialism dictates the future.

Im almost 26 and have a 2016 wrx in dark grey and I freakin love it. It still turns heads but doesnt scream for attention and attract all the subie fan boys. it still sounds amazing with the FA20, has some rumble, and drives great. i see alot of guys over 25 and over 30, even 40, driving the 15+'s . i work with three other 2016 wrx owners, all about 30 years old, that could easily afford a car twice-three times as much. so take a seat. its a great car.

A lot of recent comments asking about the car "pulling timing". This is referring to ignition timing. That is to say, how quickly the spark plugs provide spark to ignite the air/fuel mixture in the cylinder. Ideally, you want this to happen when the piston is as close to top dead center in the cylinder as possible. This is when the air/fuel mixture is most compressed, and therefore will provide the biggest bang when ignited by spark, thus producing more power. As engine speeds rise, spark plugs need to fire faster to keep up, or they'll start igniting the mixture as the piston is moving away from top dead center slightly, therefore providing less bang and less power. So a car's computer will speed up the timing (advance) to keep the combustion process happening at the ideal time for maximum power/efficiency. There are various parameters the ECU is looking at when deciding how much to advance timing as the engine accelerates.At the same time, all engines, but particularly modern turbo engines, look at many many factors that can necessitate the ECU retarding timing (pulling). The primary reason would be to prevent knock (or in response to detected knock). Knock is when the air/fuel mixture combusts in the cylinder while the piston is still on the compression stroke (upward stroke during the intake phase). This puts a force on the piston that is counter to the direction it is trying to travel in, which can damage the piston, connecting rods, etc. In an engine like the FA20, you're dealing with the higher compression ratio of a modern direct injected turbo engine, and under heavy load (full throttle acceleration at high rpm) you get higher cylinder pressures, and high heat. Those things combined can cause knock since pressure + heat can cause spontaneous combustion. The issue many manufacturers face is that they need to create a stock tune or "map" for an engine that will work in many different conditions and be cost effective. So in the case of the USA, high altitude, low altitude, hot, cold, crappy 91 octane, good 93 octane, and on and on in many combinations. They need the tune to be reliable in a variety of conditions so they aren't paying out of pocket under warranty for frequent engine issues/failures, emissions compliant because the planet, and in the case of the WRX still have good power. That is a TALL order. Some companies can get it right (e.g. the Type R), and some companies like Subaru don't totally nail it. Luckily, the after market can easily "fix" this on the WRX while maintaining or improving upon reliability, and even mpg to an extent. Savagegeese is my father. In Dimension 3911-Xfthicc, that is.

Slowmo Wow I didn’t realised someone replied to my comment a year later. Well in accordance to your scenario, I won’t expect that someone driving like a racing driver would need an arm rest. So anyone (this reviewer included) who complains about that arm rest presumably be sitting back comfortably. And how close you can sit is still subjective to your height anyway. My comment was that if a taller dude has his seat adjusted as close to the wheel as his legs would allow him, he’ll still be able to use that arm rest no problem.

The WRX is the first Subaru I’ve bought and I have virtually zero complaints period. Some people if not most are impossible to please and I feel unrealistic expectations get in the way of practicality, reliability and just raw fun. At first the shift to 2nd gear was a pain in the ass but I have now mastered it and couldn’t be happier with the WRX looks and all.

Has anyone else noticed the best cars today are usually the ones that have kept their original recipe. Ie: mustang, corvette, miata, wrx, Porsche, bmw, etc. they all execute their purpose very well. I don’t think it’s the manufacturer’s fault for struggling to maintain the same recipe, I think it’s more of the whole industry being forced to integrate new tech resulting in the loosing sight of the original purpose to be a driver’s car.

Stock tune is weird -- torque dip at 4500, power falls flat at 5700, throttle mapping is all kinds of sensitive and wonky (35% input = 100% throttle), rev hang makes it chore to drive, puttering around a parking lot slowly makes the car quite herky jerky. This makes just about every owner want to get the off-the-shelf tunes. Not a fan of the cable-actuated shifter -- feels gritty, rough, like moving it through gravel (2015-2017).

2017 owner here, Ive had the car for almost a year and still have issues with sloppy shifting and rev hang. Car has a super lumpy tune which cuts power, bounces around and falls flat in the middle and top of the rpm band. Its begun to feel very unrefined. The cable shifter is crap. Even with the Perrin Shifter bushing and shift-stop it is sloppy and rough. Aside from the long throws, My 25 year old shitbox commuter Geo Metro with a cable shift has a better feeling transmission. An Accessport is my next purchase for the car, but its annoying to potentially risk the warranty just to fix the huge flaws from the 2015-2017 batch of cars.

I tried the Perrin stops and wasn't happy. Boomba was night and day. After the car was tuned it's been great. 20K miles on it and I love it. I bought the car with the intention of modifying it so the warranty I was not concerned with. If it pops then it's just a good excuse to go with an IAG Staged block :)

I'd say this might be the only car you'll find people, I for one, saying they know it's outmatched by car X under respect 1, car Y under respect 2, with car X and Y not costing more, but they still want, desire this WRX one. Both its aesthetics and handling are so characterful and one-of-a-kind that I have no problems saying that, while a Miata or a BRZ or a Cayman or a Type-R or an i30N handle "better", driving the WRX still gives me more joy.

They give us tons of trunk space and people still complain about it. If you think about it, all the bad stuff that gets pointed out really isn’t anything that’s “wrong”. I think it’s nice that there’s nothing new, for once it’s a brand new car that we are familiar with. It’s good that Subaru hasn’t made big changes because it doesn’t really need much changed. Don’t get me wrong, everything could be changed and made better. But it doesn’t really need it. Factory, I think a wrx is fairly Goldilocks. I think that the wrx has always been a leader of making sorted cars, they’ve always had pretty good execution. It’s up to the owner to give Goldilocks some steroids....

Subaru come on get your act together. The WRX should have at least 310 - 320 hp. The STi should have at least 350-360hp or more. I remember when my STi was just as fast as a Camaro SS. Now the Camaro SS is so much faster running 12.3 @ 116 mph (bone stock with 455hp). You also have the Focus RS with 350hp that will smoke an STi in a straight line and around a track,

Can someone explain what "pulling timing" means? Does it slow down the ignition or what?
@guardrailbiter
4 жыл бұрын
"Pulling timing" refers to retarding the ignition timing. In general, advancing the timing will yield more power at the greater risk of engine knock. The ECU is retarding the timing because it is detecting engine knock. This is done for the sake of engine longevity, even if it ruins the driving experience.

I wouldn't say it understeers...sure it's VERY EASY to understeer this car, but if you live with it and figure out how to chuck it in the corner and transfer its weight around, it's very neutral. You can understeer, oversteer, or just turn perfectly and it only depends on how you transfer the weight going into the corner...
@savagegeese

It understeers. Subaru engineering has said in development they do it on purpose for safety reasons. They did the same with the BRZ when it launched. First tendancy is to push before it oversteers.

Ive had a 16 wrx for 4 years now, few new materials used ive noticed, like the steering wheel. The only thing i did not like was the infotainment system and the base speakers. The infotainment was god awful, it was so laggy, froze few times, bluetooth not connecting to devices, one time the bluetooth just disappeared. If it still made by clarion they are garbage. I switched my head unit to a kenwood dmx7705s and 6.5 Rockford door speakers.

I'm a newbie when it comes to Subaru, but I've always liked the styling, the rumble, and the immensely capable AWD. Our main daily has always been a VW GTI (2006, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2015, and now 2017), but I'm looking at long-term alternatives. I was disappointed to find Subaru went with direct injection as well, and sure enough, the forums reveal low-mileage models losing as much as 20 whp due to carbon build-up. Great review as always, I'll have to keep looking.
