Chris that was such a lovely honest report - excellent suggestions. I so appreciated the clips. It must have been very hard dealing with the 'acoustics' - as it's a planetary issue in all fields, if you know what I mean - we must rise above such things that cloudy beauty and fly with those who are flying! So pleased to meet your wife, and to see her having a lovely time with you. All super. I wanted to be with you all - just too far from NZ.

Thanks Chris for the great reaction great Job 👍👌👏and for the great video from Your Wife 👍👌👏👏And for the good explanation of the possibilities for improving the acoustics of Angelina's phenomenal voice!! Chris Angelina will only be 18 years old on January 10th, 2024. She can't be a professional yet when it comes to speaking on stage!! She has never spoken much in the last 10 years 😯 She was always shy and appropriate for her age when she only spoke 😯 the little sweet, lovable girl appropriate for her age!!! Only when she opened her mouth 😲 and sang was she that old soul voice ✨️heartwarming ❤ and so mature and strong ! powerful, in her songs with riffs and runs and melismas and her unique Vibrato 😮 a 30-year-old experienced jazz singer was singing ! Like Nina Simone! Billy Holliday Areta Franklin!!! She'll get it done in the next few live performances. She's not God💫✨️!!! She can also have a weak point!!! You're expecting too much from Angelina at the moment because she has spoiled all of us Angels 😇over the last 10 years with her singing perfection!!! Chris You can believe me, it's not for nothing that I've been a music expert for 50 years, I've experienced these situations myself!! and it always came out well in the end!!! Angelina will also make it happen. She is very ambitious with an iron will and full of love ♥️ and passion for your dream! She will experience in a few years Angelina will become a legend of the new music generation and legend since Elvis! Whitney Houston! Michael Jackson! and Amy Winehouse! Bye Chris see you in the AJ Lifestream by Tee Spicer Monday October 2nd love ♥️and peace ✌️☮️and kindness 😀 from Switzerland 🇨🇭🇨🇭🇨🇭👣👰👸🎙🎺🎷🎸🎼🔥❤️ 🔥💥💎👋💁♂️🎉

This is a wonderfully caring analysis of AJ's concert! I particularly like your idea of a segment of the evening where Angelina would sing with just a guitar or perhaps a piano. I think all of your suggestions are excellent! While I did not attend the concert, the positive responses of so many of the attendees to this performance, raises anticipations of how totally crazy good future performances might be!

Well, check out and compare The Warning, studio vs live. Ppl say they sound better live and in Mexico(home) they were already opening for bands like Def Leperd and The Killers. Bassist, the youngest sister was 12yo. 18yo now and they were the only act for the MTV MVAS awards that nailed their songs the first take. Uncle Mike should have been out looking for bands since the record deal.

Great review, Chis. I was not able to attend this first concert in the USA of Angelina's, which still brings me to tears when I think on it. I pray the family reads all the comments that your documentation has prompted, not just the ones that ones that rightly shower praise and love on Angelina. But observations by others in attendance who, beside loving Angelina, also have credentials for analyzing concert dynamics. For myself, I just think Angelina's beautiful voice should always be backed up by the best of the best, and always lovingly.

Chris, as usual you had the courage to tell us exactly what's on your mind and at the same time leave no doubt you love Angelina as much as any of us. I was seated in the LO and the acoustics did leave something to be desired. I know the band never left the stage during the intermission but it seemed as if they did tone it down a bit. So many of us wondered why she chose to play this venue and of course we found out she had performed at a private party there a year ago. She probably wondered what it would be like if the place was filled up and she got her wish! Without being critical there is so much her team can learn from this Concert. Did I enjoy the Concert? 1000%! To see her live and listen to her sing 'for all of us' is a moment I will never forget. Why do I have a feeling there are people in the industry (who personally love Angelina and her work) who will come forth to share ideas with her team on how best to present her to the public when she's on stage. Angelina will always be ready to give it her all and if the sound is projected correctly, going to an Angelina Concert in the future will be something that will be regarded as an unbelievable and unforgettable moment. Of course it should be. There is no one in the world like her.

I do not think that RR will risk putting Angelina out on tour until her album has been out for a while, and they have promoted he on talk shows, radio, entertainment magazines, etc, They will not risk half filled venues because she is still a virtual unknown singer to millions of music fans. Why is it so important that she’s going to have young fans? I think it’s great that she appeals to older people. It can bring generations closer❤ I think it’ s a qualitystamp that older people like her. Why? Because they have listened to a lot of different music and genres, and know good music when they hear it🤩 I live in Norway and have been to both of her concerts in Sandefjord and Kongsberg. Hello Cris. Thank you for this excellent record and especially for your interpretation of the concert. I agree with you 100%. Sound design must be well studied and developed by professional people. In addition to the musicians, the configuration of the instrumental set is very important. I think a bass/drums/guitar/piano quartet would be best: I wouldn't put brass that sounds very aggressive. The drums in small auditoriums must be surrounded by acrylic panels to dampen the aerial sound of the instrument and thus be able to control its volume through the sound console. Basic things, I would say. I also agree on two backup singers for many of the songs on the EP. It caught my attention that three days before the concert Angelina was in Norway and I thought everything would be rehearsed? Another thing I thought about was the cost of putting on the show and maybe that affected the result. I hope everything falls into place and this will improve day by day. I was also excited watching this video. Greetings !

Thank you Chris for putting this together. It was so nice to meet you and your wife at the Gaslight! Your videos helped me discover Angelina’s multiple talents in 2020. I loved this concert, but II agree with you that the sound could have been better. Whether it was the acoustics or the sound mix, I prefer the sound of her concert in Sandefjord (I didn’t go to Kongsberg). I loved the way she talked between the songs, even if she repeated herself. It comes from her heart and that’s what matters to me. For comparison, she stumbled a bit over her words in Sandefjord, but it was so sweet. She doesn’t need to iron that out. Her perfect imperfections, as some fans call it. It’s genuine, she doesn’t need polishing. All fans were shouting “we love you!”. Coming back to the sound in Portsmouth, yes, Unchained Melody was fantastic and mainly because the band played very softly so we could hear her so well! To be done more often, and maybe also with an acoustic intermezzo, as you suggested. Nice idea! To give another example of how good she sounds when it’s just her, I like to send you what she did in Sandefjord, one of the part I enjoyed most (sent me flying) kzitem.info/news/bejne/kX-kxZWLjml4omksi=m-GufmJiN71AnLEI at 3:40. Great review Chris. I wasn’t there but I think you make a lot of great points and suggestions. Hopefully this concert will be a learning experience. Being only 17 she has a lot of time on her hands. The hope is also that any issues are worked out prior to her tour. From what I understand, the band were local musicians so it might be safe to assume that she will have a different band for the tour. That kind of makes sense since this show was basically a one-off. She and her band need to have chemistry. I also think it’s essential that the band have a guitarist. Very surprised that there was no guitar at the concert. The guitar is important in a lot of her songs, especially the intro to Now I’m the Fool. I think this goes back to your comment about how her new EP songs should be familiar sounding. The band will need to be such that they can somehow fit with both her jazz style and her contemporary sounds. It was very interesting to hear how this concert came about. Basically Angelina was asked to perform, which is great. I had thought that her team set it up.

Thanks Chris. This was a very good , but as you qualified subjective review. IMHO, this concert was a gift to all of us due to the foresight of The Music Hall manager. An intimate beautiful setting with imperfect accoustics, a band good enough to do justice to the diversity of her music with very little rehearsal, the house sound people did a fine job given they had a few hours to do a sound check that day. The Springsteen concert probably had his own team given that they were recording. As AJ grows in popularity and Republic steps up I'm sure you will see all that you will get what you wish for and more. But remember that this was a one-of. I think that true fans should stop being so critical of the few minor glitches and savor the uniqueness of this concert. To be greeted personally by family members, to actually converse with her on stage with her spontaneous heartfelt gratitude, to enjoy an "AJ jazz take" on her original songs so soon after their release. If AJ grows to be the superstar that we hope for and expect; if her production grows to be as polished as some are demanding right now, then I think many of us will look back at this concert and long for the good old days when we could have so intimate a contact with a talent the likes of which the world rarely sees. I savor everything about this experience which will never be duplicated in an arena or stadium with slick light shows and sequenced backing tracks. Perfection can seem very cold and impersonal. This concert was "perfect imperfection" and I personally don't know if I ever want to see that go away.

So well said Robert. Your insightful comments comport with my experience. The theater was beautiful, but that doesn’t necessarily translate directly to the acoustic abilities of the space. From where I was seated (four rows back, but off center from the main orchestra section), the acoustics didn’t seem all that bad. I was surprised to hear the audio of those that posted videos including those videos filmed by Chris. The audio seems considerably poorer than what I recall, especially the overpowering drummer. Robert, it sounds like you had a wonderful experience. I shared in your overall positive experience, and your sentiments too. My only regret was missing the pre-concert get together. @@peterhormell1511 I sat upfront near a speaker column. I always carry professional sound attenuating ear pieces to protect my hearing. I was probably hearing what hall sound guy heard in his head phones. The hall did have bad reverberance, more like a hollow echo than a lush decay. That can really muddy the sound rather than enhance it. AJ had a better reverb in her parking garage. They could fix this by hanging sound deadening accoustic panels and adding reverb on their main speakers. I'm sure they don't do this because it would destroy the beautiful baroque visual appeal of the hall's interior which also adds to the experience of The Music Hall.

One question I am still asking, is this not the responsibility of Republic Records as part of her promoting contract don’t really know what they are obligated to do, but I hope they are going to do more than they seem to be doing to promote her next year once her album comes out

@@petercarter3981 Even though Sara was live streaming to Rob Christie, Universal Music/Republic Records/Capitol Records, while the concert was going on, it was the responsibility of AJ's manager, uncle Michael Astar to make sure that the band and sound system were all up to par so AJ could put on a show for her fans that came from everywhere. We all know what Angelina Jordan is capable of, she is like nothing any of us has ever experienced in the past, and to think that the band walked all over her heavenly sounds is just sac religious.

Great review, Angie...! And, I must say, I agreed with every single word you said about the show: the acoustics, the not so good capture of the voice on the microphone, the excessive percussion in many moments, the lack of the original EP's arrangements and the expectation of a potential young audience and how to produce a show with that in mind. I even imagined that she would appear, at some point, with some outfit/costume used in the EP's videos, like the one used in "Now I'm the Fool", that is, in the style of the EP's songs. Regarding the excessive lines between songs, I also agree with you, but perhaps this was, for her, a show that was like a meeting with her oldest and most faithful fans, the Angels. The idea of a section of the concert with a more intimate instrumentation (voice and acoustic guitar..... or voice and grand piano) is also brilliant. Greetings from Brazil...!

This probably explains why the lack of quality (how much you pay for the event the more you get) but that didn't stop Angelina she still accepted as the nice person she is. Probably another artist would have rejected because they prefer their image rather than the love for their fans. Angelina is the real deal and she really wants to spread love. She knew this wasn't going to go well beforehand, that's why there's a short clip of her backstage before heading out where she took a deep breath and looked nervous. But she still did it. Thanks Chris for your insights and critique on Angelina’s performance as I was not able to attend. Not only is her singing gorgeous, it is also profound and complex and has brought me through some difficult times. She is not just a performer but an activist who incites people to feel compassionate. I, too, am a bit concerned about the older demographics wishing that younger people were more aware of her music and being which might come with time. I noticed that a number of interviews surrounding the concert featured older white males almost exclusively. Something else that concerns me is that we all seem to expect or even demand perfection from every aspect of her work from arranging, composition, performance and stage presence which is untenable and inhuman in that it exerts so much pressure on Angelina and that is not sustainable. She is, after all, only 17 years old and with this history of experimenting with music and it is that experimentation and providing space for it that is essential for any great artist. Much peace and love to her and all of her fans.

To gain a younger audience I think it’s important that they hear her newer material. As much as we are blown away from her early covers and jazz songs, i just don’t think they resonate with most younger people. They might even just shrug their shoulders at I Put a Spell On You and My Funny Valentine. They just don’t hear or see what a lot of us do. I admit that I was probably the same when I was younger. I may not have appreciated the details and nuances of a singer like Angelina. It was all about the song. Some have posted that they have presented Angelina to some younger people and get comments like “she’s ok” or they “like the way she sings but not what she sings”.They associate her with the old songs and don’t think of her as a contemporary artist. She needs to somehow find a way to relate with her own age group or at least those in their 20s to 30s

Chris: Great to meet you at the Gaslight prior to the concert. A few observations: The concert was sold out. A dozen different countries and 27 states were represented. The musical hall MC said he had never seen anything like that in the venue before. AJ fans are passionate, to say the least. For example, a women next to me had flown in from Peru. For most of the concert, I sat on the front row left of the stage -- maybe 20 feet from AJ. I was immediately next to Sara (her mother) most of the night. She recorded much of the concert. She was literally the only person allowed to record. (BTW she is an amazingly gracious person. We had a great discussion.) When AJ asked that everyone stand up, "come up front" and gather around her, that was very much at odds with the venue's idea of how concerts work. Basically, I think her career thus far is at odds with how the industry works in general -- and it seems that she and her family are okay, at this point, with that. Sara seemed genuinely astonished that people would fly in from a dozen countries to see her daughter -- and after all this time, I'm not sure that anything but isolation from the industry could create that impression. I told Sara that I thought AJ was one of the most naturally gifted singers on the planet, and she seemed literally astonished that AJ could fill a 1k-seat venue. The first thing that became very clear was that the band (alto sax, keyboard, bass, drums) that worked with AJ was completely new to her. The second main point was the venue acoustics, in particular the mic, which was not anything near AJ standards. Overall, the audio was essentially terrible. AJ was phenomenal, but the band often was not in sync with her. The keyboardist was just okay; the drummer was not. (I can go into the band at length if you're interested -- they were brought in from the Berkeley School of Music in Boston.) The saxophonist was brilliant, but he competed with AJ for attention. She applauded the sax player more than he applauded her. As I'm sure you experienced, enforcers at the venue we’re brutal about videos and pics. They had pin lights that they would shine on fans using their iPhones. A couple of fans were almost thrown out for recording. Because of the band issues, the best performances were covers -- the band obviously knew them well (e.g. "I Have Nothing" and "Suspicious Minds"). They were much less familiar with AJ's originals, including (unfortunately) "Million Miles" which is my favorite AJ original.

@@andyschnell58 Andy, first I want to thank you for all your efforts prior to the concert. The AJ pins were fantastic -- hopefully they will become collectibles, from AJ's first named US concert :) I got lucky with my proximity to Sara. She came down front to record AJ on her iPhone -- really, it was amazing how she acted like a proud mom at a high school concert. It's incredible -- just incredible -- to me that she doesn't seem to understand why fans are so passionate about AJ. Maybe it's a Norway US thing. I talked to Sara at length, before I knew that she met Chris at the airport in LA. Tell me -- how could she not immediately recognize a guy who has devoted so much of his life to promoting her daughter? I would have asked her that had I known AJ's family ran into him. My career is social media analytics -- and it's clear to me that AJ's immediate managers don't get her follower base. I mean -- recording the concert on her mom's iPhone? What would it take to get a professional sound tech filming and recording in a balcony seat? Then you have 20 professionally recorded vids of her to post over the next several weeks, with all the consequent reactions from Elizabeth and Britt and Boudy and every other AJ reactor. Except, of course, that the audio was horrendous. That should be the number 1 objective at any AJ concert: get the acoustics right. The band overplaying her can be corrected in post-production. Anything can be corrected in post if you have a good audio feed. It's clear to me that Republic was in no way involved in this concert. I wish I could tell you why.

@@ClandOp "It's clear to me that Republic was in no way involved in this concert. I wish I could tell you why." Rocord labels own the rights to their recordings and are therefore exclusively responsible for the production and promotion of the recordings. Music publishers own the rights to the compositions and lyrics and take care of royalties for their composers and lyricists. Concerts are entirely the responsibility of the artists. They book the band, take care of rehearsals and either book their own sound and lighting technicians or use the venue's technicians. Artists can also hand over part of the responsibility to concert organizers. Record labels are never involved in concerts unless a live album is to be released. But this can only happen if Angelina organizes a concert with only her own songs or receives the rights to a live album from other artists.

@@DeviYim Excellent comment, Devi. I didn't mean to imply -- which reading over my comments, I did! -- that RR would be involved in organizing the concert. I was thinking from a social media point of view, where labels provide advice and support around music video productions -- in studio, of course, but also during live events. There clearly was no involvement here by RR in terms of helping AJ and her team promote her EP through any video recording of this concert. Only two of the tracks on the EP have related studio videos -- to me it was a missed opportunity to get quality videos to support the other tracks (as well as "Million Miles" which I think is the only other original AJ performed after she inked with RR). I know that the issue of recording the band is problematic -- it always is! But cutting a deal with the band for promotional rights is part of the label's job. This feels like a lost opportunity -- not RR's fault, BTW. Frankly, I'm almost certain they weren't asked to provide support . . . .

Appreciate the video Chris! I too am seeing and hearing from different comments about the acoustics/sounds and the band itself. There is one person who posted her own video clips saying that the sound and acoustics and the band were fine. It is possible that some fans may not or are not use to hearing live music in an enclosed environment as compared to an outdoor environment. And like you mentioned, they needed more practice in the concert hall to figure out the sound levels for her and the band. Her voice must be allowed to shine. My opinion, in the future, is that she needs a slightly larger band with backup singers and a soundman who can control backing track music when needed. Having the band play along with a backing track while she performs an EP song, for instance, would have been better. It would be recognizable but still sound just slightly different. Many singers do this. As for her speaking with the audience, I guess that will get better with more experience doing it. Maybe she should write down some topics she would like to talk about with the audience as well as do a short Q & A, maybe pick a few audience members to do this. Still, though, it was nice to hear that everyone had a great time and Angelina was awesome. Thanks for this Chris! Even though I wasn't there, your video brought me a little closer to the event.....

Most fans just want to listen to her voice for some reason. She doesn't really need a lot of instruments. So to arrange a concert involving this artist, has to always start with her voice. Then add in the instrumentation very carefully to fit her singing voice. Like in the EP.

I want to start off by saying that I totally respect everyone’s insights and opinions about Angelina’s concert but I can’t help but feel uneasy knowing that sometimes people just forget or take for granted that AJ is just 17 years old she literally has her entire life and career ahead of her and I’m sure in time as she continues to grow professionally these “issues” will be no more. Every time I listen to her cover of Easy on Me I can’t help but put myself in her shoes and feel for her because i think the lyrics apply so well to her life, I think that sometimes she carries too much weight on her shoulders, she’s so extraordinary that sometimes I feel people expect nothing less than perfect from her. But me personally I’m just happy I get to enjoy her music every single day of my life and witness her incredible journey. I hope this doesn’t come off the wrong way, I’m not trying to come at anyone, these are just thoughts i have sometimes. Anyway I just want to end this rant by saying thank you, I teared up during this entire video, it was absolutely gorgeous watching Angelina be so gracious and taking the time to say those kind words to her fans, and you Angels showing all that love and support for her, God bless you all. ❤

I feel she is still a very undiscovered artist so as time goes by and she gets herself more and more out there I’m sure people of all generations will support her. I’m 26 years old so I guess I would be considered part of the “younger” generation and I used to mainly only listen to rock and hip hop but the first time I discovered her was by watching her AGT audition performing Bohemian Rhapsody and I was simply blown away by her talent and soulfulness of her voice and as I listened to more and more of her singing and read more about her I just fell completely in love with her voice, her music and who she is as a person.

---- Agreed with much of what you said, especially that a part of the concert should be just Angelina with an acoustic guitar and that the between songs talks with the crowds should have followed more closely to what occurred in the 2022 summer concerts in Norway. Angelina was so appreciative of her fans, the daisies, the flowers back stage, etc that she kept repeating much the same thing. In Norway, she had much more variety of conversation with the audience ---- The acoustics of The Music Hall are not very good due to its poor design. The venues with the best acoustics are of a shoebox design with high flat ceilings that are at least 25 feet above the balcony seats. There are also few, if any, support poles for the balcony seats, and little, if any, overhang of the balcony over the orchestra seats. And if overhang does exist, the balcony seats are set high above the orchestra seats. One key appears to be to allow the sound waves to flow throughout the venue and not get scattered or compressed into tight spaces. High arch ceilings can somewhat work, but they cannot end on top of the balcony seats ---- The Music Hall has a high arch ceiling that ends about 8 or so feet from the back balcony seats. The balcony seats that overhung the back orchestra seats were low with pole supports. This was partially due to the steep grade of the orchestra floor from front to back. The side balcony seats that overhung the left and right orchestra seats also had pole supports. Acoustically this is a poor design as the sound waves will crash into each other and the structure itself, and get broken up creating an uneven sound, which is exactly what happened ---- The speakers for this concert were two 10 or so foot tall set of concert speakers on the left and right front stage. Concert speakers were also set at the front of the balcony high opera boxes on the right and left in front of the stage speakers to push the sound toward the balcony seats. I did not notice other speakers set out in the orchestra or balcony areas. The result seemed to create a muffled sound that was not clear and crisp as can be heard in your video clips of the concert ---- Yes, the band stepped over Angelina for many of the songs. I was told the band was either graduate students still at Berkeley College of Music in Boston, or recent graduates. Their lack of experience backing up a singer was very evident. They seemed to want to play loud and show off a little. One reason Unchained Melody was so good was that the band was virtually non-existent during its performance so that Angelina's voice and nuances could be heard as best as the acoustics would allow ---- Another thing was that the sound technicians seemed to be young and inexperienced with proper band sound balance and inexperienced with the tricky acoustics of The Music Hall. Artists many times have a sound engineer with them who is familiar with the singer and what the sound has to be. I have been to concerts where the artists not only thanked the musicians, but also thanked the sound engineer for making them sound good. ---- The Music Hall, unlike many venues, does not have a soundboard at the back of the orchestra seats. They also do not have monitor boards so that the sound people need to bring one. It looks like they setup on the right mid-stage about 10 or so feet behind the right column of speakers. This is far from an ideal location, especially when no back orchestra soundboard exists. As the sound waves expand from the source, the same amount of energy gets dispersed over a bigger area. For this reason, a loud sound can appear lower depending upon where you are located from the direction the sound is being made. Inexperienced sound technicians will not truly understand this and not attempt to compensate to try to balance the sound. ---- The saxophonist was both the farthest away from the soundboard technicians and the nearest to the left column of speakers. The bassist was next farthest away. They were consistently too loud. The drummer was set directly behind Angelina on the stage and his sound waves would come in slightly behind Angelina's voice sound waves, and by its very nature, the drums sound would tend to be louder than how Angelina sings. The keyboardist was closest to the soundboard technicians and also appeared to be the best balanced with Angelina. ---- Think back to other band concerts you have been at. Many times the drummer is set the highest above the guitarists and the singer so his sound will not effectively crush the guitarists and singer sound. Note that sometimes many of the musicians, are placed on elevated platforms. I have seen this done with both string instruments and horns. The artist is at the base of the elevated instruments, many times with a pianist. This was done with the horns at some of Angelina's older Norway concerts. Also, check out the Feeling Good video of 10-year old Angelina sung on Norwegian TV and you will see that the drummer is set off to the side in the back and that no musicians exist behind Angelina. In other words, whoever decided to arrange the band on stage, did a poor job and appears to have had little understanding of the sound dynamics being created. Angelina, and her people, may want to talk with a good stage and sound designer to better understand what are good, and what are bad setups ---- I was told that the sound technicians may also have been from Berkeley, and thus inexperienced outside of the concert venues that are located at Berkeley. An experienced sound engineer during the sound checks (if ones happened with the band and Angelina) would have understood that the farthest away musicians (saxophonist and bassist) and the drummer needed to be toned done. Ideally, the sound engineer would have had experience at The Music Hall to understand the somewhat tricky acoustics that exists there. If not, an experienced sound engineer would have probably wanted to get an idea of what was happening with the sound out in the orchestra and balcony during the sound checks. He also would know that when seats are empty versus filled with people, the sound waves will reflect differently ---- When I saw the livestreamed band rehearsal with Angelina the prior day, and she mentioned that the band was playing Mount Everest at a faster tempo, some concern popped into my head. It seemed the band was trying to force its performance beliefs onto Angelina rather than the reverse. Unfortunately, this appeared to hold true for the concert ---- One way to counter this is by having a Music Director who many times also plays during the concert (typically pianist or keyboardist). The Music Director makes sure that the musicians have the proper song charts and arrangements. During rehearsal he makes sure the musicians understand how to play the songs. He also controls the musicians during the concert to make sure they perform the songs correctly. For concert tours that do not have a traveling band/musicians, the Music Director serves as the equivalent to work with the hired professional musicians being used for a particular concert. Even traveling bands may have the equivalent of a Music Director who makes sure the musicians are on the same page with the artist. Unfortunately, unlike the Norwegian concerts over the years, the band used for the Portsmouth concert did not have a good handle on how to properly backup the star artist. And the sound technicians also did not know how to correctly attempt to balance the sound. And the band stage arrangement was among the worse one could conceive

@@FlyingAngel0638 ---- The speakers are part of an overall acoustical system that is required to address the bad design of The Music Hall ---- Many consider putting in line-array speakers is the best way to get clear sound from the front row to the very back of the venue. One aspect of line-array systems is the shape of the dispersed sound. Point-source (non-line-array) speakers project sound in a spherical shape, radiating out in all directions from the speaker. But an audience usually is not surrounding the speaker in all directions - the audience is usually more-or-less in front of the speaker. A line-array system projects sound in a shape closer to cylindrical. This reduces the amount of sound energy that is projected vertically (to the ceiling and floor). Reducing vertical dispersion is good to minimize the sound bouncing off the ceiling and floor that will interfere with the direct sound from the speaker and creates a more confused, reverberant sound. With a cylindrical dispersion pattern, the amount of sound energy decreases with distance at a slower rate. That means that as you move away from the speaker, you lose less volume, meaning that you can project sound farther away using less power. In a smaller venue like The Music Hall, side filling speakers typically would not be recommended when using line-array speakers, and I did not see any. However, speakers pointing to the balcony would be needed, and I did see those on front of the second story opera boxes ---- But, just because you have line-array speakers does not mean you do not have to properly prepare the venue with acoustical materials. From what I can tell, The Music Hall did little to prepare the venue with acoustical materials and the line-array speakers cylindrical sound projection was still being reflected from all the hard surfaces and other architectural issues that exist. When lots of sound is travelling to the ear from different directions, the result is disruption which has a detrimental effect acoustically. Good room acoustics ensure that noise is absorbed before it hits a person’s ear, so there are not disruptive effects. On top of this, I would be willing to presume that sound measurements where not done to check how wide the cylindrical dispersed sound was, and at what quality, especially in a filled venue compare to an empty seats venue. The reason I believe this is true, is there are too many people who either reported good sound (probably in direct path of the cylindrical sound waves) to poor sound (most likely in the outside orchestra seats and the outside balcony seats) ---- Hard surfaces such as bare floors and walls and hard furniture such as wooden or metal tables, chairs and counters all have a detrimental effect on room acoustics. The more hard surfaces in a room, the greater the need for absorption, this is because sound waves are not absorbed by hard materials but instead bounce off these reflective surfaces, creating a noisy and echoey environment. These negative acoustical effects need to be blunted. Utilizing fabric wrapped acoustical panels is a primary way to reduce echo and reflections. These panels are constructed of acoustical materials and trap enough waves to reduce both echo and reverberation ---- The high arch ceiling can also be an issue, even with line-array speakers. Higher ceilings increase volume in a room meaning sound is lost in the 'dead space' above our heads. They also result in higher reverberation times as sound waves have to travel a long way before they are reflected by a hard surface. The focusing effect of the vaulted ceiling can cause a coloration of the sound. An effective way of insulating a high ceiling room from excessive sound reverberation is to address both wall and ceiling acoustics. The direct way of reducing sound is to use acoustic paneling or tiles on the walls. I did not notice any. A second less effective way is to use acoustic paint which is unknown if any was used. This could also be used on all the support poles and other hard surfaces. As for the ceiling itself, installing a sort of large acoustic duct on both sides of the ceiling can act as an acoustic disperser ---- With the type of speakers being used at The Music Hall, we were having front-to-rear reflections as in essence they had created a tunnel-shape for the center of the room. Outside the speakers another tunnel effect front-to-rear is caused by the side balcony overhang. There was also a tunnel effect left to right from the low balcony seat overhang at the back of the orchestra. The rear orchestra wall should have absorptive material as well as the flat balcony ledge that surrounds the orchestra. ---- The stage area should have a flexible, adjustable acoustic system for the amplified performances (which, I believe was Angelina's) and for the less amplified performances (like a play). The back wall, the ceiling, and the upper left and right of the stage could have adjustable absorbers. Why? Because if a small orchestra was playing, making the area too dead would not be liked by the musicians who want to hear the reflective sound of the instruments in the orchestra when they are playing ---- I can see why you felt that the old non-line-array speaker system was better even with the acoustical issues of The Music Hall. However, why they probably changed to line-array speakers had to do with the loudness that people would hear in the first rows in order to get the last rows the sound. My guess is that both sets of people complained with one saying the speakers were too loud and the other set of people saying the speakers were not loud enough. The Music Hall appeared to have chosen a cheaper "solution" rather than fix the acoustical issues first. And now they still have sound issues, just different types than before

@@gebendeavors907 great, excellent explanation. I was not there, so I could not make judgement. I thought this old venue was designed for acoustic performance, so doesn't need very loud sound from the speakers. From the venue website, they were using a pair of 15 inch speaker (with tweeter), hanging high on the side of stage to cover the center orchestra and balcony. Then the added some pairs of small speaker, one pair for left and right orchestra and one pair for left and right balcony. They also added some small speakers in the front of the stage to cover the front line and subwoofers. But I totally agree with every point you had on how to make concerts even better in the future. I hope Angelina and her team will get some real professional help in concert directing and production. Maybe record company will be in charge later.. She is a masterful and super talented artist but she needs help in other stuff. In professional hands her concerts could be totally mind blowing from start to finish. When you see Angelina in an interview situation or speaking between songs in the concert you can tell she is obviously a little bit shy and then you suddenly understand that she is still just a 17 year old girl and her confidence is maybe not very strong yet in everything else but in the actual singing. When she sings you totally forget her age because when singing she almost like transforms to whole another person and there she is very confident and has always been that way. But they say that Freddie Mercury was quite shy person in real life.. You wouldn't expect that if you have seen him performing live on stage..

Thank you for the work you put into this review Chris! Also have to agree with most of your points. But - I was one attendee who came down (during and just after the concert) more on the side of it being a magical experience, and I honestly do not recall thinking much about the band overplaying her vocals, nor feeling like there were acoustic issues, during the concert itself. However I was close to the stage on the right, thus not right in line with the drums, etc. And I hadn't seen her in concert before so...felt slightly in awe just to be there and hear her sing. TBH though, in seeing a number of leaked out recordings, I do see the basis for some of the complaints - which should and I believe will lead to improvement. AFAIK this was her first performance in an indoor venue of this size - nearly all of her previous concerts were outside, right? Among her many other wonderful qualities, she strikes me as both smart and determined - so I'm confident she and her team will make the necessary adjustments. Thus I look forward to attending many great concerts of Angelina's in the future.

@@lesbrunswick5137 Rocord labels own the rights to their recordings and are therefore exclusively responsible for the production and promotion of the recordings. Music publishers own the rights to the compositions and lyrics and take care of royalties for their composers and lyricists. Concerts are entirely the responsibility of the artists. They book the band, take care of rehearsals and either book their own sound and lighting technicians or use the venue's technicians. But artists can also hand over a large part of the responsibility to concert organizers. They take care of the artists and audience, the hall, the fees, the technology or the catering. The decision for a concert organizer rests with the artist and the artist's manager. Record labels are never involved in concerts unless a live album is to be released. But this can only happen if Angelina organizes a concert with only her own songs or receives the rights to a live album from other artists. "Also, even if they don't do concerts, I would think they would be deeply interested in having Angelina's concerts succeed." Yes, that's probably why the phone call with Rob Christie during the concert, but it's the manager's job to take care of detailed questions about concerts. RR can offer help, but the decisions are made by the management and the artists.

However it needs to be seen by the whole world, especially Angelina singing "UNCHAINED MELODY", whose version is as good as Bobby Hatfields version back in the 60's. No other female singer including Leann Rimes version has ever brought forth so emotion , and heartfelt soul, and Angelina's slowed down version. It is a "must hear" for every die hard music fan that prefer musical art over cookie cutter pop music we have today. Angelina is becoming a young, beautiful, humble, Goddess of song. Chris, I hope the people who are working and managing Angelina heard your critique and recommendations . I do believe at this point they probably have noticed the short comings, especially the acoustic . You are not the only one who said the acoustic was not up to par. I wondered why the management didn't use the band from Norway who already had many shows with Angelina and have known her since she was about 8 years old. I was not there to see the show. But one thing that really bothered me was the photo. There was one photo, shot from behind the stage which I think it could be at the end of the show before they bowed to the audience . In that photo Angelina was off center, instead of placing Angelina at the center , the shortest one of the four musicians was in the center spot. IMHO , that was bad etiquette . This was Angelina Jordan's concert so two musicians should have flanked her on both sides.

Great job, Chris. Many people have commented (chatrooms, YT) that AJ could benefit from some professional stagecraft to help iron out some of the repetitive banter in between songs- I admit I'm one of those. I know and respect that others are not affected by what I would characterize as awkwardness. What I think is remarkable, however, is AJ's willingness to continually put herself out there, hoping she can wing it- it's incredibly courageous, natural and clearly heartfelt.

Angelina is so very special and sincere just as she is. Her musical genius is her gift to the world not her between song banter. Do not forget that English is not her first language and her feelings and emotions have to go through her mental interpretation. As far as the production goes, I get the impression it was done on a shoestring, why would that be? No label promotion yet, there must be reason. I think it should be understood that the sound output is controlled by the sound man, or sound people. They are responsible for the mix of the sound coming off of the stage. They have to have the expertise, and ability to understand, and produce the proper sound mix between the music and the singer or singers, as well as the balance of the instruments. If you are in a venue, and you are having trouble with the balance of music between the artist and the musicians, it is ultimately the responsibility of the sound person to create the proper mix. People are suggesting, in these comments, she should have her own band when she performs, but I would say that what she needs is her own music director, and sound crew. She and her music director would, of course, have established a rapport between the two of them, and because of that, she would get the same quality of sound from musicians even if she had to hire them for any particular event. And if she had her own sound crew, well of course ultimately it would be worked out to where they knew exactly how to produce the sound of her stage performances in the way that they understand was to her preference, and what she is comfortable with.

And it was in RR’s interest to ensure that this arrangement was in place for her first public US concert ‘promoting’ her EP tracks. The PA mixer was located in the wings behind the keyboard player. It should be front of house facing the stage. I’d love to know Rob Christie’s take on this setup.

@@pa1189j Behind the band? Well that was just unfortunate, and quite amateurish. Our girl deserved better than that. I am appalled to hear that's the kind of setup she had on her first American show, and I think that just reinforces what I was saying about the things she needed. A music director, and a sound crew to travel with her to all of her shows. Her song production has moved to the next level, and so should her road show so that her live performances can reflect the quality of her studio recordings. It can be extremely frustrating to watch her go through something like this when you see wrong things around her, and not have the ability to actually do anything about them. It seems to me that her record company should be the ones who would make sure all these things were put in place for her. I really hope someone in her circle has seen these problems that have unfortunately occurred in her first American show, and will have those things rectified at her next live concert no matter where she is. It has to be understood by everyone involved that her performances have to be set up in the way that her sound, and her music is always consistent because now they are reproducing hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of studio recordings, and productions. She should always be shown in the best light from now on. ❤️

---- Just a side note about The Music Hall being a very old venue. It is not the age of the venue but the design of the venue that caused the acoustics issues that a good sound engineer may have been able to minimize; but, alas, not eliminate ---- The Musikverein in Vienna is considered the best acoustical venue in the world. It was open in 1870, 8 years before The Music Hall was built. It is a shoebox with high flat ceiling set at least 25 feet above the balcony seats. It has 1,744 seats, or almost double The Music Hall

@@randegelo3506 ---- Yes, The Music Hall does have on-staff operating and production personnel, including audiovisual, who will help. How much they aided the sound technicians with the band (and effectively Angelina) is unclear. Presumably they did their best. However, they had little experience with the band and Angelina. One would presume that The Music Hall personnel had little, if anything, to do with the sound technicians who ran the sound during the concert. Ideally, a sound engineer very familiar with the needs of Angelina had been in control and he would have made sure her performance was highlighted. That seemed to not be the case, unfortunately ---- From The Music Hall tech specs, there are a bunch of Meyer Sound speakers in various points of the theater. With my quick glancing, I did not notice them. I am not sure what speaker setup was actually used. One would have presumed some variation of the default sound system for The Music Hall was used. If so, this concert pointed out that sound issues still significantly exist: - Two self-powered Meyer 500HP subwoofers are located in front of center stage. They do 35 Hz to 140 Hz and have a peak SPL of 135 dB at 1 meter. This is the low-end sound and by its nature will disperse everywhere. In quality home stereo systems, when the bass is cranked-up, one literally can hear/feel it even if one goes into another room, closes the door and can barely hear the mid and upper ranges. In apartment buildings, this low-end bass is what drives some people crazy because it literally goes through the ceiling, floors and walls, and one hears the pounding bass - Two Meyer CQ1 speakers are to be the left and right orchestra mains. They were to be located in the lower box opera seats. However, for Angelina's concert there were left and right onstage columns of speakers that did not look to be CQ-1 speakers. The CQ-1 is a wide coverage main speaker that is a self powered, phase-corrected reinforcement loudspeaker. It has a patented constant-Q horn design with a frequency response of 40 Hz to 16 kHz that is uniform over the entire coverage area in both the horizontal and vertical axes, with no side lobes - Two Meyer Ultra X42 speakers are to be the left and right balcony mains. The Ultra X42 is a mid-sized point-source loudspeaker with a rotatable Constant-Q horn. Phase-corrected electronics ensure flat acoustical amplitude and phase response. The beam width remains consistent within close tolerances in both the horizontal and vertical planes and across the horns’ operating frequency range. The frequency range is from 55 Hz to 19.5 kHz with max SPL of 134 dB for M-Noise (i.e., emulates the dynamic characteristics of music), 132 dB for Pink-Noise (i.e., sounds like a waterfall as each octave interval carries an equal amount of noise energy), and 134 dB for B-Noise (used for linear reproduction of a band-limited input signal so one can have the speaker accurately reproduce different sounds as from those of a person or from electronic dance music or from acoustic guitar or from whatever sound source is input into the speakers) - Six Meyer UP Junior XP speakers. Four located at left and right front sides (one each to cover under the side balcony overhangs and one each at balcony level to cover the left and right side balcony seats). One was for orchestra seats sound filling and the sixth was for balcony seats filling. The Up Junior XP has a rotatable horn. For a multi-speaker setup, it provides filler sound for the areas not properly covered by the main speakers. The Constant-Q horn affords uniform response throughout the coverage area ---- The Meyer speaker system is a bunch of horn speakers integrated together. I happen to have some experience with horn speaker setups as in the distant past I had two Klipshorn floor standing corner speakers (used the corner to greatly expand the sound generating area and reflect the sound more fully throughout the room). This speaker is a fully horn-loaded, full range, three-way system with a folded-horn 15" woofer. It is capable of extreme output levels with ultra low distortion and excellent dynamic range (in other words, it can be LOUD and still sound great). It attempts to mimic a live performance in a home setting and has won many awards over its 65 years for its excellence. However, as a horn speaker, the sound can be directional (the use of the corner tries to minimize this effect). So, under certain room scenarios, a filler speaker was sometimes added, typically between the two corner speakers. This made sure that the room coverage was reasonably consistent no matter where one stood in the room. In other words, I understand why the Meyer UP Junior XP speakers were needed in a theater setup when using horn speakers, some areas can experience sound drops that the filler speakers will cover
