Also, I'm wondering if there is a nostalgic energy I've been searching for from my old D&D game campaigns that might have NOTHING to do with the game and everything to do with my friends hanging out every weekend playing D&D. In which case, game design needs to take that into account as well. :) And yes, games are luxury items in a sense, but necessary for the soul: Play. Vitality. The only things I find people have issue with is length (I enjoy the grind), the rulebook (easily fixed) and people wanting more varied rewards for progression. I've been playing Bardsung with my friend, once a week, for the past two months or so. I'm finding that my enthusiasm has been waning as I continue to play and the rewards are just too minimal. I agree with all your points in the video. Here is a list of things that turn me off of the game, some are the same as you pointed out. - Rulebook is awful! I appreciate the learn-to-play style for a bit but then it becomes impossible to find rules again when you want to find a specific one, as it could be almost anywhere. - GRIND. What I realized after about 5 play sessions is that everyone is pretty much the same. There are plenty of nodes that have absolutely NO reason to go through. There isn't any story, treasure, cool enemies. It is just another grind through dungeon crawl fighting the same creatures. My friend and I recently agreed to just skip those, add a few gold to our pool, take the experience (if any), and draw 5 or 6 story cards and resolve them (in order to push story elements that might be in the cards). That has worked better, but still too much grind. - Too much repetition with monsters. They are the same, over and over again. Even when they change them up a bit, they aren't that much different. - Too little story. At this point I don't even really understand or care why we are on this journey. There is so little narration in this game that it makes Gloomhaven seem like War and Peace. At most you get a paragraph here or there and then grind through five more nodes, to get another paragraph. Maybe it becomes cool at some point, but I just haven't seen it. + I do like the character building and combat is fine. That has been what has kept us coming back, but I don't know how much longer that it will actually keep pulling us back in without some significant payoff. Not too hopeful.

Brian, thanks for your great reply here and I apologize for taking so long to actually answer. That RULEBOOK... damn that thing stopped me cold. I was SO EXCITED about this game... I was thinking I was going to play it all the time, my game group, and then that rulebook. Then... I just made it happen, figured it out, and then it wasn't long before GRIND became an issue. And I've been thinking about GRIND a lot lately, because it's a real thing. I just got Etherfields, there is a new unboxing video up somewhere, and I've heard about it being grindy. I've also heard the same about Tainted Grail, which I just backed the new game. I'm also playing a D&D game right now, a 5th edition port of the old Temple of Elemental Evil game, and I'm starting to worry about GRIND in that game as well. Design wise, to create a fast paced game... a combat that has CHOICES and TACTICS, and is a PUZZLE... I'm thinking the best I've seen might be Gloomhaven. I never get bored doing battles there. And then, a story, that moves along, is intriguing, surprising, delightful. Mechanics and story. Avoiding the Grind. I know it's a thing in Video games as well, though I don't play video games very often anymore.

My second group is about to fight the last two bosses of the epilogue Monday (although my first group only made it halfway through the main campaign before we had to scrub it for irl reasons). If you haven’t dropped it yet, some tips I think might reduce the grind are to try and condensed every chapter into 3-4 nodes. Reading all of the narrative entries as if you’d played all of the nodes one at a time parsed throughout the 3 or 4. We switched to this after roughly 4 chapters with my second group. One of my groups biggest issues is how wildly the balance is skewed in different directions, and barring 1 epilogue boss fight and one chapter with special explore mechanics we didn’t really miss the extra gold or xp we might be missing by dodging the extra nodes. A real complaint is the enemy cards not changing fast enough. About half the time it feels like they’re upping the difficulty to keep pace with the players but then you’ll bump into a set of cards for two chapters you feel like you could’ve dealt with 6 ability acquisitions ago and just think “why didn’t they use stronger cards or more mechanics?” Having played almost all of it I’ll say that it is fun and the setting is cool and decently explored. Saying that it’s repetitive in a lot of sections, and it feels like it’s too easy to sink your teeth into satisfyingly while simultaneously too complex to be able to bring with me for less experienced or mechanically invested gamers to be able to pick up and play with. It’s definitely not for everyone and required some fiddling for my group to enjoy.

I concur with Jason (TGW one). Bardsung had so much promise and has so much love, but some key elements hurt the overall final experience. MD2 is great. Arena the Contest is ALSO great. They are different games though. Arena is a number bell curve controlled tactical game originally made for PvP by Chess players. The PvE was very controlled originally, but Tanares Adventures and the RPG KS will expand in those directions. MD2 is more of a seeded random encounter generator in a loot and xp chase. It is a nearly unrecognizable redesigned Zombicide with Diablo/ video games in mind. Both are amazing games. Granted this game hasn’t been out near as long as Gloomhaven; but if there is a fan group it is well hidden. Randy, yeah... I wanted this game bad... and I got it! And it wasn't what I wanted it to be. It just didn't hit. Consider Oathsworn, a game that DID hit. It's subtle... and not always easily understandable why one game hits or another doesn't. I think it has SOMETHING to do with Steamforge games.... They just don't take care of the LITTLE things. This game needed more playtesting, a WAY better rulebook, and some smoothing out. It had some great ideas... but was too grindy, and did escalate fast enough. That made the story too slow, because you were always grinding away. Just little things Steamforge tends to mess up every time. There is a huge distance between GOOD and GREAT...and Bardsung was down on the good side of things, and in today's Gloomhaven world... where it's HARD to be GREAT... you have to do more. They just didn't do it, and unfortunately, don't seem inclined to put the work in to make any of their games EXCELLENT. They settle for good.

@@thegamewarrior6306 well I ended up buying the game since my last comment I couldn’t help myself I wanted it and I wanted to dive in. I organized all the trays and nerded out over the minis like I’m sure a lot of people do with new games and I played the tutorials and set up at my big table and started the campaign. The gameplay I had a bit of fun at first but then suddenly a weight came on my shoulders. My character had no name, no agency apart from a specific set of actions, and all the tiles looked so identical it was hard to tell apart aside from size. Every “map” looked the same which thematically made it fall flat. I can still enjoy the game as just a dungeon crawler like a diablo 3 where you do the same thing over and over and over again, but it’s got the worst campaign structure I have ever seen lol. And when you said the rule book was bad I heard people say that about gloomhaven and I got on with it fine so I went in thinking I’d get it. I’ve never had to read a manual 6 times and STILL try to find forums for rule explanations of which I may add there were very few of those lol. It’s a conversation piece game for me and I am glad I own it, but instead of a campaign of unique missions like gloomhaven or even journeys in middle earth or heck even massive darkness (which I also picked up) has unique flavour in the missions; Bardsung felt like all the bad side missions a video game will send you on to fill the run time and that’s the whole campaign. All this to say I’m still excited for the Elden Ring game from Steamforged because I did enjoy dark souls and I still play that from time to time. But I don’t know what the goal was with Bardsung because I just can’t get around how every single map tile design is literally exactly the same just different shapes. No varying colours or change of scenery. It gets drab very very very quickly.

I fully understand why you sell it. The game has a good foundation, but the campaign just doesn't work. The authors seem to have gotten lost in their maze of event cards, not realizing that the rest of the game could not be left so undeveloped. The adventure books has 180 pages of which only 2 are dedicated to the explanation of the type of encounters that in fact are almost all the same and some are broken highlighting that a playtesting worthy of the name has not been done. The rest of the book is just full of patterns, which make the campaign incredibly long and incredibly repetitive. Monsters change too rarely, but the most absurd thing is that the key items are found by drawing the right event cards, the problem is that you are not told not to shuffle them every session. By mixing them you risk never finding them and however you are forced to repeat sessions after sessions in an attempt to find them by lengthening an already repetitive game even further. The authors don't have a clue what game design is. Too bad because the game is good, it would have been enough to do a more restricted campaign with more refined chapters, develop new types of missions and so on. However Massive Darkness 1 and 2 are still inferior, at least bardsung is not zombicide in disguise.

Fabrizio, I like your take, and smiled at how you snuck in a dig at Massive Darkness 2 at the end. I honor what you like, but for me, Massive Darkness is pure gold! I love the game. -- As for Bardsung, I wonder if I was a fly on the wall what I might have seen as they designed it. Is it as you said, they just were out of their depth in terms of experience, and why wasn't it playtested enough, not enough time, money, or did they think they had it handled? Yet, you can see they put a lot of love into the game, but one definite feedback is the repetitive grind, so you think they have probably heard that, and will retool for the next edition.

@@thegamewarrior6306 Thanks for your answer. It should be noted that Massive Darkness and Bardsung are quite different DCs. Bardsung is inspired by Warhammer Quest and takes up its roguelike nature, so it is less inclined to structure missions in a specific and refined way. The idea of using a board in which to contain the dungeon allowed the introduction of original elements but also led them to remove the Quest Room (the room you had to reach to complete the quest) and this has definitely impoverished the game. Massive Darkness on the other hand does not randomly generate the dungeon, so it needs that the missions are well built and also tested. MD excels at providing a match that fills an evening like Zombicide did (albeit not as effectively) while the campaign is an additional and in some ways almost optional mode. MD wasn't specifically meant to be a campaign game, while Bardsung absolutely was. Now if in a game specifically created for a campaign system you fail the design of the campaign you have a serious problem. If you were the fly on the wall what would you see? You would see that the authors have put a lot of undeniable passion, unfortunately in side aspects of the game. The huge amount of event cards, has devoured all their time and their structure has become so complex as to force them to build flowcharts, which have produced errors, the need for their correction leading them to work on it up to the threshold of the game's print. So key elements like the variety of missions and the repetition of the gameplay remained incredibly unseen. It seems that for them repeating the same session over and over again is fun and that its randomness is enough to ensure it does not bore the players. I have other games like this one, Shadows of Brimstone or Darklight memento mori for example, but these put some extra effort into making the quests more interesting. The narrative aspect that was supposed to be an attractive hook of the game ran aground on the fact that being all set in a huge dungeon, it is not that it inspires this whole story to tell. They produced a good game system but never tested it by running an entire campaign and given game delivery times, much remained theoretical without practical testing that would have revealed the flaws. What do players want in this type of game? Explore mysterious dungeons, kill monsters and find treasures immersed in a narrative that justifies and gives meaning to their actions. Treasures in Bardsung are incredibly rare and most of them are resettable consumables, which often cost more money to restore than buying a random item card from the deck that possibly generates a gem with a permanent bonus. The economic system is a disaster, the monsters give too few coins! The authors were inspired by the D&D boardgame but the lives of the heroes, who were there tokens that you obtained at the beginning of each mission, here have become healing potions to buy (and it is not even clear from whom), with the risk of not having the money to do it and you risk getting bogged down in boss fights that you can't get through because you don't have the necessary resources. Bardsung is a classic game from KS, with authors who have a lot of economic resources in their hands, but who are amateur designers and do not understand that passion is not enough, but behind the sumptuous components there must be rationalization that leads to quality gameplay. Barsung could have been a great DC, combining the old school with modern elements and yet today it is a game that you either sell or do like me and modify it massively to save it from the incompetence of its authors. SFG is also no stranger to these outcomes with its games. As for MD, I think MD 2 has improved some aspects of the original and we hope that Bardsung will follow this path with perhaps a more complete and thoughtful second edition.

@@fabrizioarvat1141 Great to hear from you! Good meaty answer! Okay, one thing I like about Bardsung was the sense of exploring a dungeon. They put some effort into those tiles, they LOOK good, even if they are a bit confusing sometimes as to what spaces are what. So flipping a tile and opening a room is a bit more exciting. Eventually… you run into the boss room or get out by hitting the other side of the board. Now… if I’m designing my own game, and who knows, maybe I am in the back of my head… I’m liking this idea. A lot of other stuff went wrong with Bardsung, but the IDEA of exploring chambers of a different type and size with great artwork and feel… that’s a good idea. On that note, a game that works for me in his randomly generated pattern is Nemesis. It combines both worlds, by having a STRUCTURE… (the ship and it’s hex tiles) but arranging those hexes randomly each time you play. Thus certainly rooms are ALWAYS there, but you don’t know where. And some rooms aren’t always there, the less important one, giving some randomization. This has so far, delivered the idea of surprise and delight better than any other game to me. I’m ALWAYS excited to discover what tile I’m going to flip. ALWAYS. It’s exciting and nervous. Now… it’s not just the random element of a random room. I’m usually SEARCHING for a specific room… so flipping that tile has some ANCICIPATION and hope built into it. I have HOPE for something, and at the same time DISCOVERY, and at the same time, FEAR, that it will be bad. Bardsung lacked any hope of what was on the other side of the door,. Massive Darkness does exactly what you said, but it’s worth discussing. They have a pregenerated dungeon which does allow for more specific stories and balance. But loses some of the excitement of exploration. Now the discussion moves to campaign, and how to explore that… and now I kind of turn my head to Oathsworn. How do THEY do it? Well they split the game into two parts. The Story part, where you explore a city (so far at least) and inside that city there are encounters that seem random, and are filled with surprise and delight, and which you are searching for something or doing something, and it gives you choices. It’s so far well done. It’s not random, but it feels random, because there is choice in it that has consequences built right in. THEN…. After that exploration phase is done, they flip to the Encounter Phase, and they skip the dungeon exploration part… skip it entirely, and just go straight to the Boss Battle. That’s a pretty interesting design strategy. And so far, it seems they make this big battle EPIC. It sings, and is very tactical and has a lot of ways to play it and has an AI for the enemy. It’s a pretty cool way of doing it. And it has 20 story beats, 20 encounters, and 20 new miniature bosses to paint. I’m just starting… but so far this seems to have worked as a design element. (I’m also open to the very real possibility that Oathsworn is NOT a dungeon crawler.) As you mention with your fly on the wall scenario, I do believe the designers had their hearts in the right place, but Bardsung just didn’t pull it off. And the big issue is almost always GRIND. Right? (Another thing Oathsworn avoids. Just skips grind and goes to the Boss Battle - The more I think about that, the more intriguing the idea becomes). On the note of treasures being rare… that’s one thing I LOVE about Massive Darkness. I am going to gain 5 levels from each scenario, I go from weak to strong, and by the end I’m usually loaded with loot. Like you said, not necessarily workable for a campaign, but I LOVE that idea. And one of the drawbacks of ANY D&D type dungeon crawler game is being so weak at the beginning, but it’s okay if it pays off. Most of these games though, that pay off takes a LONG time. I say give them some levels and treasure right off. Every campaign I DMd in Dungeons and Dragons, my players gained a level and got treasure in the first session. Period. They showed movement on those scores, and it intrigued the players and kept them coming back for more. BTW I love how you sum it up, so I’ll quote your words: “What do players want in this type of game? Explore mysterious dungeons, kill monsters and find treasures immersed in a narrative that justifies and gives meaning to their actions.” I might add: Play a cool heroic character. Great response! I love talking about this stuff. It’s from conversations like that that I imagine people design to go out and make a board game. Thanks for taking the time to share your ideas!

Well I hope that was the best decision for you. I'll say this, there are SOME people who have found the game to be fun, who have updated it, who have written new rulebooks for it... so it IS a workable game. But not for me. What other games like this are you backing or looking forward to or playing?
