I paused the video before you begin, simply to say that I am loving that you switched up the intro paintings. It’s a clever idea, changing the paintings used from time to time. You clever clogs you!! 😁

Thanks for this review. I appreciate your thoroughness. It's a pass for me, though. I have a full set of Caran d'Ache Neocolor II water soluble wax pastels and they are a dream to use. In comparison, the Charvin set seems difficult to dilute on the paper. Your video helped me not to feel curious about them any more. 😂

Hi JoAnne! I have several different brands of soft pastels & these were intriguing enough to…try. I’m still not convinced, but they are fun to look at. Thanks so much for watching & commenting!

I used these as a mixed media good for adding a semi opaque areas with foliage in watercolor. But I agree with kind of dusty chalk

Soooo, I fell asleep part way through last night - sorry Ann. Charvin watercolours are extremely expensive, so what was the price point of these? Was it high enough to raise expectations? I have seen several people purchase the watercolours and who subsequently felt let down. Perhaps such an old company ought to stick to what they do very well - oils. I thought you coped extremely with a strange product and your end painting was much better than I would have felt possible from your initial swatches and blends. This is testament to your artistic skill!! An extremely interesting and informative video. Incidentally, Charvin can be just as difficult to track down in Europe, and I am yet to see any watercolours sold separately, and had no idea they even did the pastels until you showed them here. 🤷♀️🖌️🎨👩🏻🎨❤️

These pastels are very inexpensive, and they feel inexpensive when using them. Today, Amazon lists them for $22.99 and Jerry’s Artarama lists them for $15.99. To me, this product is exactly why I don’t like beginner students to seek out “whatever is cheapest” for their art supplies. If these were my first exposure to pastels I would probably not continue to pursue them as a medium. That said, there is so little information about these-they might work much better on Pastelmat paper. I haven’t tried that yet and honestly I’m hesitant to, given the experience on watercolor paper here. So no, I did not go into this with high expectations! On a scale of 1-10, I would rate these a solid 5.

@@artonthecreek The price point somewhat explains your struggle. I am honestly shocked that they even produced such a low quality product. It has done little for the image of extremely high end supplies they purport to sell, with a huge price tag to match. Had they put a caveat on the outer box saying "children's product", perhaps it would explain your difficulty. The noise and the dust would likely drive most parents insane though!!! Noise doesn't bother me, but the struggle and dust most certainly would! I think I'd be constantly sneezing. ❤️ Thank you for an excellent review. You could have thrown the company under the bus, but instead chose to soldier on and in the end, you came up with a very good painting. Anyone watching though could clearly see the issues over and above those emphased by yourself. ❤️

@anitadavidson1266 I agree with you completely. I’m not even sure these would be something I would let children use - I can’t remember if they are labeled safe or not…🤷🏻♀️ I’ve been wondering if I could possibly grind them finer and add some gum arabic….?

@@artonthecreek The French are safety obsessed, so I would imagine all is well in that respect. I do have a better way of obtaining finer particles. I used this technique when tinting clay. Very lightly and gently move the flat, sharp edge of an exacto knife or similar down the flat edge, allowing it to collect in either a little pot or onto your plate to be either picked up and used dry, or picked up with a damp brush if wished. It certainly worked in the very old box of student grade Eibhart Faber (tells you just how old they are, and still perfectly usable). It takes mere seconds to scrape off a lot of fine particles. Give it a try and let me know if they are even too rubbishy for that to work. Good luck, this message will explode in 💥💥

I'm confused. To the best of my understanding, all soft pastels are water-soluble. What makes these pastels different?
@artonthecreek
Ай бұрын
@@veystone2580 you are 100% correct and I cannot determine why that phrasing is used other than as marketing. I can tell you with full certainty, though, that if you are a seasoned pastel user, these Charvin Arts pastels do not come close in comparison to Rembrandt, Sennelier or even the student-grade Mungyo. They are hard, gritty and scratchy. For a firm pastel I would choose Prismacolor NuPastel over these. I made this video quite some time ago, and have not used these pastels since. They are probably my least favorite. You may find artists who rely on them, but they are not for me. I suspect the “water soluble” phrasing is merely a marketing tool used to attract water-media artists.

I talked about this in the review-they really are their own animal. Pigment particles are notably larger than Nupastels. Jerry’s has them on sale today is you’d like to try-nearly half the price of Amazon! www.jerrysartarama.com/charvin-water-soluble-pastel-painting-sticks
