I grew up listening to Christian Ferras and Pierre Barbizet, a superb duo, playing the Schumann violin sonatas and three romances written originally for Oboe and piano (a DGG gramophone record that has yet to be re-issued on a single CD. It is available in wider compilations.) What a wonderfully expressive artist he was!!! And what a tragic end to a life. May he rest in peace. And may he be rewarded for enriching our lives with his wonderful musical gift.

I discovered Ferras through this box, when it came out in 2017. Had heard his name before but never got to it. Couldn't believe that with that level of playing Ferras wasn't better known.

I was given his recording of the Brahms concerto by a perceptive grandmother when I was 11 and I fell in love with it instantly. I think the conductor was Malcolm Sargent. I’d love to hear more of his playing. A shame it’s not in this box. Decca Ace of Clubs I think

If you watch the YT performance of Ferras playing Sibelius concerto, he is literally in tears (whilst playing) at the end of the second movement. The tragedy of this movement must have surely resonated with his depression. As a kid I saw him play in Halifax, north of England with Fremaux and the (pre-Rattle) CBSO. It may well have been one of the last concerts he played before his retirement and it was very memorable.

Wow a review of a box set I own! I really enjoy it. I also have the Barbirolli Sibelius with Halle but based on your review of that, it is fun to have it to compare to others. :)

While in Paris in 1968 I heard Ferras perform Mendelsshon's Violin Concerto in E minor with the L'O.R.T.F under Charles Bruck. The program included Berlioz, Le roi Lear, overture; Martinon, Deuxieme concerto; Ravel, Daphnis et Chloe, deuxieme suite. Tickets, 3, 5, 7 F. I left the Theatre des Champs-Elysees with the memory of Ferras to the exclusion of the other pieces. The earlier box from French EMI "Les introuvables de Christian Ferras", (2002) had only five discs. The new ICON box is a welcome addition.

10 years ago Universal Music France issued a 10 cd box of Ferras' Deutsche Grammophon and Decca recordings, "L'art de Christian Ferras". I was lucky to get my hands on it before the price ridiculously soared sky high. I think, though, it might still be available as a download or at some streaming services more reasonably priced. In this box you find the recordings of Chausson's 'Poème' and the Lekeu sonata, that some of you requested. Beside the well known BPO/Karajan concerto recordings, supplemented with Bach's violin concertos with the same forces (whatever stylistically reservations one with good reason can harbour in respect to these performances, to have Ferras dueting with no one less than Michael Schwalbé in the slow movement of the double concerto, though, is like wallowing in aural luxury cream), you find a couple of Mozart concertos with Münchinger and his Stuttgart band. You even find something as exotic as Serge Nigg's first violin concerto (when did you last encounter that piece?) and Honnegger's sonata for solo violin (next to Ravel's Tzigane - "bvadr" 😉). Only one cd is spent on the unavoidable, miscellaneous 'Encores' - otherwise in the violin/piano department there is a lot of more substantial fare such as the sonatas by Franck, Fauré, Debussy, Brahms and Schumann - mainly with Barbizet at the keyboard

For years I resisted Ferras's recordings because the Trusty Penguin Guide sondescendingly objected to his "small bore" tone and sniffily noted a few lapses of intonation here and there. This is a paradigm case of how (excuse me, Dave) music critics can bias the unsuspecting listener against an artist before the prospective listener has a chance to hear and evaluate for him/herself. Eventually, on a whim, I purchased that French DG set and was astonished at how beautiful that tone really was (not as opulent as Oistrakh, to be sure) and how serenly aristocratic his musicianship. That box, by the way has some interesting repertoire in addition to Ferras's collaborations with Karajan, which are also splendid. I probably will pass up the Warner/Icon Ferras box (there are repertoire duplications between the two), and save my pennies for a Warner complete Milstein edition, should one appear. EMI didn't do justice to that supremely great violinist's discography, giving us two (or more?) incomplete survey boxes that competed with one another due to significant overlap. What were they thinking? Hopefully Warner will someday rectify the situation. Milstein deserves nothing less.

Music critics... I am reminded of scathing reviews of some recordings by them, then rave reviews of the same recordings scandalously re-issued under the fake name of Joyce Hatto.

Pleasantly surprised you did this video. I love Christian Ferras, I've always preferred the earlier Silvestri collaborations in this box than his later studio recordings with Karajan, of which the Sibelius I'm also not warm on and I felt could've been left out of the Sibelius VC video. In my ignorant opinion, I think the KZitem video with Mehta did A LOT more for his Sibelius concerto fame than the Karajan recording did.

Hey, great. The soul of Christian Ferras can now rest in the peace of Elysium, while that of Heribert still writhes in the third circle of Purgatory. Thank you.
