I never had the resources to try this ,but get a big Ford or GM chassis place a 1000 hp 6-cyl. 567 diesel in it, it's a two stroke cycle,I think it had a blower instead of a turbo,these motors had an rpm range of 200-800 ,but damn they could pull 2000 tons on steel rails,oh they were locomotive engines and they were tied to a dynamo,but I think in a truck a multi disc clutch would do the job,the 567 is displacement of one cylinder.They were made in-line 6,V-12 ,V-16 and V-20,the latter was 6000 hp @ 800 rpm,but a bit to large at 20 feet long.

@@jaycousland9835 I've been running manual glow plugs for years. 7 seconds is exactly what you should be doing on a 6.9. Some guys go for 10 seconds and end up shortening the life of the glow plugs. If you're planning to keep the truck for a while, oilburners.net is a great forum to learn and share info on these trucks. Oh, and the ATS 088 has been out of production for about 30 years. You can still find used kits sometimes and a small community of shops are starting to build new ones. Mine was used as well and needed work before I could use it. ATS and Banks have long since given up on these engines though. Hypermax is the last big name that still sells kits.

Even in Texas summers, they don't want to start if the glow plug system isn't working. Good thing is the glow plug system is really easy to understand and repair. Never seen an IDI glow plug controller on the left side of the engine; on the turbo model, they're always on the right fender, and on the non-turbo engines they're on the back of the motor. The IDIT was done less for power and more for killing smoke. There were IIRC at least three tunes of the IDI, depending on the altitude they were destined to run at. Run a sea-level truck in, say, Denver and it'd be nothing but black smoke. Run a high altitude calibration at sea level and it was just as gutless as it would be at home, just with more clatter. With the turbo, the engine never realized it was anywhere but at sea level. Oh, and I'm still driving an IDI. Yeah, it's gutless, but it runs, and I don't have to deal with electronics issues that come up on newer trucks.

I loved the "smoke screen" option in my old '84 6.9. If it was 50 degrees or below, you needed two batteries and half a can of cosby sauce to get it going. The car parked behind would totally disappear into a thick cloud of smoke! If it was exactly 51 degrees or higher, you barely had to bump the key and it started like you just shut it off - no glow plugs, no spray, no smoke! The sticker said 150hp from the factory, but on the highway I could not do more than 65mph, and where there was a hill, I had to get a running start otherwise I couldn't make it over the top. *Still got like 17mpg though!!*

Never had an issue with glow plugs, or cold starts down to 0 F. Your friends IDI in Africa probably Isn't maintained well. Return lines are kind of a pain, but not as bad as other fuel systems. The achilles heel in my opinion is the fuel selector valve, and that they always leak oil. Other than that, they get decent mileage and provide adequate power to most uses, and last a long time. That's why we still see them being used

My father just picked up an 85 f350 with the 6.9idi for $500 with a plow setup. Was running when we got it but later blew 2 rods threw the oil pan. Now he found a 7.3 idi none turbo for $250 with apparently 76000 original miles on it. Your video was perfect timing for us! Keep up the good work!

Nothing that can't be remedied with a shot of wd-40. Or ether...when you just don't give a damn anymore. Grew up with an 83 6.9 that we just never bothered to replace the glow plugs on. Shot of ether every morning and run it all day. Half million miles and a ton on idle hours and it took a wreck to stop it. The engine still ran, just not much truck left.

That's honeslty the pure glory of an idi. Thats all it has. But that's why it's great. No one will do that with a 6.7 powerstroke but it actually performs

I just bought a turbo charged 7.3 Idi and it's had some tuning done to it its got high horsepower injectors In it I don't know how much they put out the old owner of the truck put them in I put a ATS Aurora 4000 turbo in it and I had my buddy find out how much horsepower it makes,he works on sled pulling trucks, and he said that my ol 73 idi puts out 313 hp. I don't us it for sled pulling or anything I just haul hay with 32 foot gooseneck and it's actually pulls better than my 73 powerstroke

I have a question!!! If you always wait for the wait to start light to go off in cold conditions before cranking, will the glow plugs last much longer due to the proper usage? I was confused about this part.
@machscga6238
2 жыл бұрын
Yes you wait for the "wait to start light" to go off then you start cranking... this is true for both 6.9L 7.3L idi as well as the Chevy 6.2L and 6.5L Detroit... if you don't wait to start cranking the truck over you will destroy your glow plugs in 3-5 starts

The 73 IDI is the first diesel motor I ever worked on any Ford box truck first I had to change the transmission then the guy told me after I changed the bad transmission that it didn’t run so then I had to change the injection pump it was pretty labour-intensive considering you have to pull off all the front pulley is in the front covers to access the gears to time it I didn’t know that before I just went unbolting the injection pump d I learned the hard way and in the end he had a nice running driving box truck

Dead accurate review. Take care of the starting system, and these motors just run and run. Those damn leaky fuel return caps are the only major annoyance I’ve had with mine over the years.

Cavitation is when a fluid boils due to pressure reduction. It is usually associated with pipe restrictions and bends in liquids that are moving too quickly for the plumbing situation. This has nothing to do with pistons. Now, there might be some cavitation in the engine, but your description of what cavitation is, was off the mark.
@stephendee7839
4 жыл бұрын
@Doug Deshawn I suspect that there's actually cavitation going on as Rich is pretty knowledgeable, but the statement made was "cavitation is " bla bla bla that was not a correct description of the physical phenomenon of "cavitation."
@nickwhite6717
2 жыл бұрын
@@stephendee7839 happens due to combustion pressure slightly deflecting the cylinder wall and then it coming back true. When it comes back to place it creates a slight vaccum on the coolant side and the coolant boils off. Those bubbles then collapsing is what eats away at the block/liner

my dads IDI is just gutless. also had an issue with the 2 fuel tanks. it was taking fuel from one tank and returning it to another, running one tank clean out of fuel in no time. however it is pretty fuel efficient and geared nice and low for crawling around. ive cold started it at -20 and it started good. but it has brand new glow plugs. dunno, i kinda like the torque and low gearing, but other than that not a huge fan of the truck.
