Agree. I thought the beginning part in our world was great, and the journey to the city was some of the most suspenseful and tension-filled narrative fiction I can remember reading in a long time. I thought the second of the half of the book didn't quite sustain the same high level but it was still very good.

The slice of life stuff in the first 40% of the novel was my favorite part, very good character work there especially. The fantasy world was a big gigantic dud, it was a shallow cliche-filled fantasy world that seemed like it was trying to appeal to not just YA readers but really unsophisticated YA readers. It was full of boring tropes and shallow characters. A far better portal fantasy was The Talisman, which he partly wrote with the help of Peter Straub. And of course Dark Tower was much better too.

Couldn’t agree more with your review.. first third of it was okay-ish and was compelled to read on in hope of a great plot but myyy God, I really struggled to finish this. The characters meant nothing to me. Charlie became more and more cringey and annoying throughout. I forced myself to read to the end and it wasn’t worth it 🤦🏼♀️

What non-scary King are you reading good ma'am because this video suggests you either didn't like or didn't read Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption or Under the Dome and I am not okay with this 😅 Also I mostly agree with your review except that first third was awesome sauce. I completely agree with your review and I am a big Stephen King fan - pre-Twitter - so the political commentary really annoyed me and felt very out of place. But it could have been forgiven, had the plot and just the writing in general been good. It wasn't. I liked the first half but the second half of the book did absolutely nothing for me and I couldn't relate to any of the characters. I couldn't understand why Stephen King felt the need to make all these comments about white s u p r e m a c i s t s and then include this ridiculous plot point about Charlie suddenly becoming blonde and blue eyed when he wasn't before and people started bowing to him because they thought he was some kind of a prince? As if you can only be a prince if you have blonde hair and blue eyes? What was that all about? And why these royals were meant to be so noble and good but they abused their ugly disabled brother and made fun of him to the point where he chose to become an evil monster and kill most of them and curse the city? I have a lot more gripes but I don’t want to spoil people.

Great review, loved hearing your thoughts!! Bit of a bummer that it didn't live up to your expectations, it's always so rough when you feel like you have to drag yourself through a book. Also, love the fact that your favourite character was the dog, haha. I agree that this book felt like a YA novel. I also was looking for it to be more dark and in ways it felt like when given a choice between going dark or going YA, he went YA. Having said that, I did enjoy the book but I did have a lot of the same problems you had. Especially with the fact that the later characters are not fleshed out and not very impactful. Great video!
