I believe you would of had much better results if the mill was mounted on a stable counter top or attached workbench table. You were losing a whole lot of energy to the wobbling of the table and mill. Give it try that way and see if your results are different. I was pricing manual mills this week and was very happy to see this demonstration pop up. Also, commercially processed popping corn and home grown, air dried popping corn in my experience has a different density; home grown easier to work with. Thank you for sharing the experience! 🙂

I'm planning to grow popcorn and dent corn this year in my garden, so I'm hoping it will be easier to grind. Unfortunately, that wobbly Ikea table is all I have at the moment.

You cannot expect this little mill to grind it to size with one pass. You have to grind it in increments...grind it a little at a time! 3 or 4 passes, narrowing the size each time.....

If you watch the video you would see that I actually grind it several times.

You don't have to go to the gym anymore, just use your grinder. Grain like almonds, chickpeas maybe easier.

Total user error. It is so much easier when mounted to a stable surface. And backing that wing nut up towards the crank handle allows you to close the gap on the griding wheels, creating a flour instead of a meal.

Did you find some of that silver paint was coming off when taken out of the box? I bought one today and while setting it up I had silver paint or a silver residue on my fingers

I noticed it a little bit, but I was told that you should run grain through the mill several times to remove any paint from the gears and then throw that batch away.

This pre grinds the corn up so it’s easier for your coffee grinder to do the rest of it. Your a genius having this around you can unscrew the thumb bolt on the crank take the crank away. Get a 3” long hardened bolt (just take the thumb screw to the hardware store and match the threads) and you screw that new bolt back in where the crank went they make a little nut drive er that goes in your drill that will fit the bolt .And run it with a drill motor in low gear. Back off the grind pressure a little a run it through three or four times.

I was just looking at grain mills today online! I'm glad you did this video. This was one of the brands that I was looking at. I'm sorry it didn't work as well as you had hoped. I saw some of the other comments about using a sturdier table. If you do try that, please let us know if that makes a difference.

We have the mill, but we usually run it through the mill several times. Corn is tough. We even run wheat two times. It does work but yes, labor intensive. Look at some of the drill attachments.

What will you do with ground popcorn
@paisleyhendrix43

Grits; polenta , cornmeal mush , corn tortillas, the list goes on

Ground popcorn is basically just cornmeal. You use it to make all the things that you make with regular cornmeal.

@@paisleyhendrix43 yes I understand with regular sweet corn or other dried corn I just didn't know with popcorn! I know it's a harder corn to deal with. I love love grits

Definitely one needs to send it through in two or three steps. Popcorn is one of the hardest grains there are. Battery mills would NOT cope, and 1/4HP motor-driven will be much more expensive. If one is planning for a grid-down or SHTF situation t's a balance of what you need and what you can afford.

@@TheCrabappleCottage I've just taken delivery of a Victoria hand-mill. As the saying goes, I'd rather have and not need than need and not have. Grains can be sprouted and turnd into soups, grown into "wheatgrass" and juiced... OR painstakingly milled down into grits or flour, depending on patience and need. I LOVE having multiple options. If TSHTF, I won't have any other commitments than staying alive cheaply and sustainably, perhaps using only whatever I've already purchased and stored. In that situation I won't be worried about sending my grain through the mill as many times as it takes!

@@TheCrabappleCottage we have a Country Living mill that qe purchased the larger auger for and with it the popcorn gets ground up nicely. Popcorn is the hardest grain to grind I have tried, but it sure makes some nice cornmeal wnd all popcorn is non GMO so that always nice to know.
