Thank you for this review. For me, it is more than a review - it is an introduction to a type of cycling that I know very little about, so I thank you for all the details. I already consider myself a "rough rider" in that I have a gravel bike, and am proud to cycle long distances, unsupported. I say "unsupported" because it is hard to find water in times of this pandemic, so I carry a lot of water, and a lot of tools/parts with me. The next time I choose to change provinces here in Canada, this might be a very good option for me.

Nice to see KOGA reviews. I've been trying to reach a KOGA retailer in Basel, Switzerland via their email address with no luck at all. I've even copied my English text with a German translation and still no response. Naturally, I suspect that this would not be a good choice of dealerships for me with their lax approach to customer service. But they're right near EuroVelo 6 trail which I am wanting to ride. Logistics (plane from Atlanta to Paris and train from there to Basel to take delivery) are now being reconsidered. I wish you success with that KOGA shown so let's hope I find some way to get a new KOGA and take off with these retirement dreams.

Just the kind of Koga review I was looking for, thank you. I'm daily biking on a Koga e-deluxe now for 7 years. No mechanical problems if you don't count the frame paint that was loosing from the frame after 2 years of use and a broken battery after a year (new frame and battery for free), so that was a superb service I got from Koga. Time to look forward to a new buying adventure, because I'm in need of replacing the old bikes battery, and a complete set of brakes (I never trusted the Shimano Deore rim brakes, especially in wet conditions). I'm living at around 500m of the Channel so all metal things on my bike rust very easy, some more things need replacement to. In my view, it would be a financially wrong investment on a 7 years old bike. But should I now go for a Koga Signature or choose another brand, there are so many excellent bikes with specifications equal to a Signature and a same price tag (Kalkhoff, Flyer, Riese&Müller,...). A very tough decision to make! And now you paid attention to me on how electric cables are originally taped on the handlebars, slippery handles from Brooks and disc brakes from... again Shimano.

Koga has updated it's E-Worldtraveller-S slightly. Giving it a new electric motor and now comes with the Bosch Kiox display. This enables the bicycle to be locked within the motor as well. Therefore making it very unatractive to steal the bike. Since it can only be unlocked by Bosch itself.

How does the electronic shifting on the Rohloff work when the battery runs out or when there is no battery attached?
@OutdoorguruGearReviews
3 жыл бұрын
"Energy Supply The Rohloff E-14 does not require additional, individual power source if used in connection with a Bosch eBike system. The Rohloff E-14 shifting system will piggy-back off the Bosch eBike sytstem, drawing power from the Bosch battery as and when required. Due to this configuration, the Rohloff E-14 will only function when the Bosch eBike system is switched to the “on” position. The residual power in the battery will enable the integrated bicycle lighting system to remain functional for a period after the Bosch eBike System switches itself off. The Rohloff E-14 shifting system will also remain functional during this period." Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

Learn by doing en voortschrijdend inzicht. Groet, Gijs

Hmm, I am 1,68m and my Cube dealer recommended the 46cm or max 48cm frame ( Trapez ) for the Kathmandu Hybrid (28"wheels) . My Cube Mountainbike has also a 46cm frame...27,5" wheels. I have also used several different online configurators and the recommended framesizes were always around 46-50 cm. Batteries : Bosch maintains an online tool to calculate potential rangevof the battery, taking into account the type of bike, bosch-motor and battery-system . It also lets you select weight up to a total of 150kg for the system including baggage, various driving modes, road/ underground types, landscape, weather ( windspeeds ) and season ( summer/winter ) , drivers specifics and many more. Also very important : Try different pedalling cadence settings....Each Bosch motor has a certain optimum which gives the most support with the least amount of necessary energy. Somewhere between 70 and 85 for the normal Bosch motors and around 80 - 95 for the CX versions. Maintaining the optimal cadence by using the gearshifting is one of the more important strategies to keep battery drain low ( and helps to avoid knee-problems ) , just with a bio- bike where the driver is motor and battery at the same time.... Most impacting parameters are weight, speed, hilly or mountainous environment, wind, road / track / trailconditions, type of tires, drivers position on the bike. In my case, using a CX with twin 625 Wh batteries and an average speed of 22km/h, the range can vary between less then 80km and up to 278km under best conditions. This tool is an an eye-opener about what is really possible with one or two Batteries of a given capacity and under many different driving conditions and what are really the parameters with the most impact. www.bosch-ebike.com/en/service/range-assistant/ All the best Stefan

Dear Ace, Koga started in 1974 and is a brand created by Andries Gaastra, former sales director at Batavus Bikes. He started with Koga B.V. when his father Gerrit Gaastra sold the Batavus company. He merged the first letters of the surname of his wife Marion Kowallik with those of his own -Gaastra - last name to the brand name Koga. To my knowledge the Kona Company was founded in 1988 by Dan Gerhard and Jacob Heilbron and the name Kona comes from the Hawaii island Kailua-Kona. Both Kona owners like this place. So… lack of fantasy? I don’t agree ;-) And... The great-grandchild of Gerrit Gaastra is... Gerrit Gaastra (now you are right about imagination) the owner of Bike Basics with bike brands IdWorx and... Gaastra. Enjoy the Outdoors! Gijs

EURO 6'025,- is way too much for a bicycle/E-Bike. Take Dacia or other car brands, they have brand new cars out of the factory at almost the same price. This bike has 24 kilos of material, a car has a ton of material. This Koga has Rohloff, Bosch, Shimano XT Disc Brakes, Tubus and so on, but all of the stuff is extremely overpriced. Calculate all parts separately at good retail prices, you never get up to EURO 6'025,-. And then calculate with factory OEM prices... It's a big overcharge. Compare it to car: What's the price of a car engine? It just cannot be that a car engine costs less than for example a Rohloff Speedhub or a Bosch electric motor. The pricing of a lot of bicycles and E-Bikes is just not realistic. It is just for example at EURO 6'000,- and more, because customers can't think and can't calculate. As long as customers pay the prices from another world, brands rise and rise up prices. Take Shimano Altus: Good parts, last long, realistic prices, around 20 times cheaper than a Rohloff. But not 20 times weaker than a Rohloff. In the Chinese market expensive E-Bikes cost USD 1'000,-, in the European market E-Bikes can cost more than 1'000,-, but not 6 and more times more. That's lightyears away from good.

Hi Jonas, Thanks for the comment! You are comparing apples and pears. Compare a Stromer speedpedelec to a Tesla or a Polar and a E-bike like a Koga to a VW ID3. I do get your remark on expensive parts and partly do agree but volume wise Rohloff and Shimano can not be compared. It is good that we have different manufacturers in different countries. I read you love cheaper Chinese production; I would love people to support local markets and not go for the cheapest option but also for the sustainable option. In this respect your way of thinking is a bit scary and will lead to a domination of one productive country and than what... Higher prices, no parts getting to anywhere. Covid has proven one thing: a lot of countries are quite vulnerable when stuff does not come from China anymore. And... don't get me wrong: there are great parts (and bikes) coming coming from China. Funny thing: the cheapest E-bike I can buy in The Netherlands I could find quickly retails for € 749,00 and is designed in The Netherlands and made in... you have a guess. Would I take it on a biking holiday? I don't think so. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs

Outdoorguru there seems to be a discoloration in the top middle of the display. It could be the camera angle but it doesn’t look like it. But what do you mean about my name?

@@mountaincruiser817 Mountainbike Geklungel, I am Dutch so I know what it means and I like it ;-). You could be right about the display but I can't check that anymore since the bike is back to Koga. But... I had a look at some shot I made in a different angle and I don't see it there. It is strange that I did not make a comment on this if it was very visible whilst biking and shooting the video. But again: can't check it anymore.

Making an e-bike from an original great (non electricaltour-bike) is not the right way. Original tour bike is 10/10, for an electric bike better to look for Riese Muller or Flyer , that stuff.

Sorry but as soon as I realised this was a motor bike I stopped watching. I hate them. I don't think the cycling community should be promoting or accepting them. Sorry.

Alex, I do get your point but I like E-bikes within their purpose. Do I like bikes better? For sure! This Koga was for me a new start in the relation with Koga and I am happy about it since.... the next bike is going to be their new WorldTraveller that is to be released shortly. One thing that is also important, is that my channel gets a new reach in audience. E-Bikes in general are way more popular than the relative small trekking bike community. And I need audience to maintain making independent reviews. I hope you understand. Would you mind if I do a review on camera-gear so now and then? Hope to hear from you. Gijs

@@OutdoorguruGearReviews If you knew the damage that the manufacturing processes of these motor bikes with their motors and Li ion batteries did to the environment then you wouldn't accept or support them let alone buy one. I love bicycles. I cycle because I want to do as much to protect the environment as possible and improve the quality of life. If this means pedalling a little harder without cheating using a bicycle with a motor then I can live with this. The bicycle I believe was one of the most efficient machines ever designed and has low environmental impact. But sadly now this is changing as these MOTOR bicycles are becoming ever more popular with lazy people who do not care about the environment. They are corrupting cycling. Lazy people become even lazier. I am glad the UCI banned them. Human nature is to be lazy to cut corners, to pull one over on some one or some thing else. The market for these motor bicycles is being driven by money. Industrialists just want to make money at any cost. They don't give a crap about the environment, the water, the air quality, the natural environment. People buy them because they believe al the hype that they are environmentally friendly. NO THEY ARE NOT! I hate these motor bikes with a passion. They ARE firstly motor bikes and should be treated as such. They are NOT E-bikes which is a euphemism for motor bike. People should have to take mandatory tests, have insurance, helmet and annual inspections just like a motorcycle. The speed these things can reach is frightening as well, double the speed of a normal fit cyclist on the same cycle path. They are the next environmental scandal waiting to happen. People shouldn't be so fucking lazy. I can see you want yo grow your channel but surely you can do so without embracing these motor driven bikes. If you want to do camera reviews from time to time that would be great but there are already many many people doing camera reviews and very well. I am not criticising your presentation just the type of item you are now choosing to review. I think my arguments are pretty valid and in the fullness of time I shall be proved right.

@@alexmorgan3435 Alex, Thank you for your more than compete answer :-) and yes I do understand but I am a bit less radical if that is the correct word. There is a difference in embracing e-bikes and reporting on them. I don't embrace them, but realize they are there for a reason. I don't agree with you on people being lazy: I know many elderly, handicapped, commuters and schoolkids that because of a E-bike are not taking the car and do a fair amount of workout every day (40K). A E-bike is not a stand alone motorbike that does everything for you. I know, I own motorbikes. And... In The Netherlands a lot of people just use a bike. The battery issue is a BIG problem as is the end to fossil fuels. I would love to see more support for hydro-engines I and think the E-solution for the moment is fase into a newer way of thinking about energy and sources. Camera's: point taken! Just curious: where are you based? Cheers, Gijs ps I like this kind of open discussions. Thanks for that!

Alex Morgan I live in Denmark, and every day I have to bike approximately 18k (each way) to work. I can easily buy a car, but I opted for a e-bike ( e-world traveller), yes you are right about the batteries, but you are probably using one now, either on your phone or laptop. My point being, I don’t want to start my working day at the office super sweaty and “tired”, e-bikes for commuters are the way to go. Cheers from Copenhagen.

@@bigboobearboo Well I ride 30 miles about 50km each way to and from work on a conventional bicycle. I think you are pretty pathetic and lazy to claim you need a motorised bicycle to help you ride only 18km. This is pathetic. I hate e-Bikes and the lazy people who buy them who convince themselves with pathetic arguments like yours to justify them using or buying one. You massively increasing the destruction of the planet by using these bikes. The millions of batteries and motors being manufactured and fitted to such motorised bikes, the raw materials dug out of the ground from huge mines in Africa and South Americe destroying the natural habitats. Then when they are worn out thrown on the scrap heap or landfilled or in rivers. Yes you can use the duplicitous analogy of batteries in phones and laptops but there aren't really any alternatives to using these, but we would have these anyway, but with motorised bicycles there are alternatives and the main one is a traditional conventional bicycle with no such motor or batteries. When you ride your motorised bike think of all the damage that has been done to the planet in producing it. A normal bicycle simply doesn't have such a damaging environmental footprint. Don't be so fucking lazy and pedal for yourself!

Another company and its paid representative (regardless of the bullshit... "All business inquires: gijs@outdoorguru.com") exaggerating the virtues of a hardtail ebike with a poor layout and overall lack of design as a touring bike. Yes... it Could be ridden around the world just like a person could walk around the world but why? Tiny little batteries that will be cooked in the 1st year... if you have 3. Underpowered, no suspension (but then that's how you get to use the Gates Belt), bolt-on cheesy racks, minimal bar space for gear needed to "travel" in style and less like a vagabond. No mirrors, highly recommended for touring in traffic. An aluminum frame hydro-formed in an attempt to get more rigidity and strength rather than just using steel. The only redeeming aspects of this bike are some of the components built by other companies that have been hung on it. Don't listen to people trying to sell something or that are begging online for handouts. They end up saying anything and everything including whatever they are told by the manufacturer to get money. Fucking money addists talking out of the side of their neck. If you want a real ebike, something that Can be ridden around the world if you choose then find the perfect bike and hang a BaFang BBSHD on it, get a pair of 30Ah batteries, a Grin Satiator for charging and the control of your choice. Bike, batteries, charger, control display and you have a great start for a real World Class Expedition Tour Bike. If you want an off the rack bike built and designed specifically to sell rather than to ride... this one is as good as any of the crap being offered to the public. I don't blame Koga since they are nothing but a company trying to make money, that's what companies do. What I think is vile is people that try and get others to drink the Kool-aid on behalf of sociopaths for a few fucking pennies. If you want one of the best then build your own just like I did and don't listen to yammerheads on KZitem. @Jurre is Online If you think that 2 500W batteries is enough for touring then it's obvious that you live in one of the flattest countries on the face of the planet OR are you are trying to sell Lithium batteries too. Note: Netherlands has a mean elevation of 98.5 feet (30 meters) above sea level and the lowest point is -7 meters at Zuidplaspolder, while the highest point is Mount Scenery reaching 2,877 feet (862 meters) above sea level.Apr 25, 2017 Maybe that's why you choose to jump on planes and fly somewhere just to ride your bike, of course with the obvious other incentives. It's funny to me that you are pointing out components of the bike as what makes it special, other than the obvioulsy false statement about the aluminum frame being "ridgid" all those parts can be used on almost any bike. But as you say.... it's fine, if it only cost $2500.00.

@Jurre is Online Opinionated through years of experience, and if you find me impolite then grow up. My education comes from riding not reading. I did learn from research, however, and experience... that batteries are the most expensive components over the life of the bike. Treating them well is paramount for "owners" and means you don't fully charge them. It also means you don't fully deplete them. That gives you 60% of the battery's capacity to use as you like. If you want to race up a hill so you can talk crap about it and then coast back down... fine. Do you know what 60% of 500W is? I use 1.3Kw/30Ah 52V triangle packs and I get 18Ah. out of each of them to spend however I want, and do no harm to them while doing "it", thus greatly extending their recharge cycle count (life of the pack). You will also find that you can charge larger packs at a higher amperage (faster) without stressing the cells. p.s. I didn't mean to wad up your panties Jurre, and ya kinda have to cross borders if you want to ride anywhere don't ya? - Bike pics: prior to Oct 2019 photos.google.com/share/AF1QipN67sUw0ykU-Mg5gLsOw9vF8kBMEM5cGCgCNmLT_j72h9iu5fKYFFVbLJ2Z415Umw?key=LUZqdEl1d3RjNV9id0ZvTEFickhITnBwWFZrU3hR

Dear Brian, You sound angry and I don't know what I've done to deserve this. Because of your choice of words, I do not respond substantively to your comment expect for one thing: I am 100% independent. I am not payed in any way for my reviews. The "All business inquires: gijs@@t") is there because I produce video's and reviews for other independent outdoor magazines that do pay me for the reviews. And I am always looking for new clients. I need a bit of money to live. I hope you don't mind. I had a look at the bike you build and respect for that. Enjoy the Outdoors! Gijs
