Is he keeping the Concergebouw postion at the same time? I know he is resigning Paris and Oslo. This will leave him with two of the top 10 if not the top 5 Orchestras in the world. It is incredible that Chicago would offer this postion to a 28 year old who will jet back and forth to Europe for another full time job. What made me laugh is his interview -- when asked about how he prepares for all these concerts on his schedule, his answer was "I eat 4 bananas on busy days". Brilliant answer!

Dave may have been as offensive as the Babylon Bee with the new "Pregnant Ken" doll, but what is really most inconvenient is that both might be right. So, everyone is talking about Mäkelä, and I was mildly interested enough to compare the ending of the Sibelius 2. to the one by Mariss Jansons with the same Oslo Philharmonic, even a video, actually. Perhaps Jansons was not as young and photogenic, but I was convinced that he could build - conduct - that ending, and sell it to me. I didn`t believe Mäkelä, sorry.

Standing ovations after each but I had to listen to an old Lorin Maazal version in the car to remind myself of the piece as I always envisioned it (particularly after hearing Makela’s extremely comparatively slow tempo for the the last section of Spring which spoiled its impact).

We have reached the stage where image is everything and musical ability means little,just like in pop music. Nigel Kennedy was the first example. Most of the players in major orchestras could do a better job than the conductors who are standing in front of them.

This is going on all through the world of the marketable arts- music, film, tv, music, painting, writing, and so on - the further rise of the models. TV and film, for instance, are more than ever just a medium of models acting- narratives portrayed by models. But in so many other artistic domains as well- probably all of them- it's the visual image of facial and bodily harmony that commercially prevails over talent- so people must be buying it. And the only things that suffer are the arts themselves, plus less photogenic creators of equal or greater talent.

I heard a snippet of this recording on the radio in my car today - Classic Praha is a Prague commercial FM classical station, and during the day they play random excerpts from this and that. The bit they played was Les Augures printaniers from Part I, and it sounded quite odd. But then, things on the radio when I'm driving often don't sound right. I have a cheap, noisy car with the cheap factory radio and speakers. But after the excerpt, they said it was Mackerel conducting, so that was probably why it sounded fishy.

I've seen this orchestra live (not conducted by Mäkelä, fortunately) and it's really a shame because you can hear it has potential. I don't know if many people share this opinion, but I really believe that French orchestras in general have been really unlucky with their conductors in recent years. What did we get since Markevitch and Martinon? Yes, from time to time we get a great recording from France (Myung-Whun Chung's Daphnis and Chloe, Măcelaru's Saint-Saëns cycle...), but 90% of the time they're just boring and snoozy. And of course Mäkelä isn't the only one, just consider Emmanuel Krivine's absolutely anemic performances with the Orchestre National de France. Please give us a conductor that will make them play, for God's sake... A guy like Manfred Honeck for instance. We know they can do it, Leonard Slatkin has made terrific Ravel recordings with the Orchestre National de Lyon, all they need is a great conductor! Does anyone have the same feeling about French orchestras?

DG (of course it was DG) made a stab at the same thing a few years ago with Daniel Harding. Look at the heartthrob cover of his Carmina Burana, completely unrelated in any way to the music. Maybe Harding was already too old by that point to keep up the centerfolds for much longer, but they stopped it quick. As Mäkelä is still in high school, they know they'll get a few more years of pinups out of him.
@robhaynes4410
Жыл бұрын
@Gregory Chapman And there's no reason Mäkelä can't also evolve. But high-profile appointments & recording contracts should be the end result of (at a minimum) competence. They shouldn't be training grounds. I suspect he's more likely to be another Dudamel rather than another Harding.

I saw Makela conduct Sibelius Violin Concerto with Janine Janson and the Orchestre de Paris a few weeks ago, it was TERRIBLE. Probably the worst live performance I've ever seen, and from the look of my fellow patrons, the worst they had seen too! I have never experienced such a lack of flow throughout a movement, or between movements, and Makela selfishly never paid attention to the soloist - she was barely audible. If anything, I gained some insights into how out of touch the modern classical music industry is with the audience.
