Just purchased this . Tried a bivy for the first time last week. The Trekmates Squall . The only thing I didn’t like was the top entry . This Elan has a side entrance which I think is better for me . Great review atb Tony 🇮🇪🇮🇪

You won’t be disappointed. I like the side zip way better. I have a goretex army bivvy bag but is basically a human sock. The only thing I will change at some point on this Elan, is to put a small vent by the feet to breath better. I tend to use mine in summer or dry months so need the heat to release

Yes I totally agree with your thoughts on it. You either like them or hate them. The marmite of the camping world 😂. For me it has its place in a simple overnighter, or trying to go lightweight hiking, but then hiking pole tents now are under a kg for a 2 person tent so if you have one of them the question is, is a bivvy needed??? I guess if having to be stealth nothing beats a bivvy as so low and tiny footprint

Every body gets out of this sport what they want, I respect that, watching u get into it gives me the creeps, feels like it a body bag not to the feeling of claustrophobic , enjoy I’ll stay with my Luna solo, I just set it up in my yard for 3 days of rain , no leaks an it’s 8yrs old !!

Oh yes I’m not the biggest fan of a bivvy bag, but I only use when space on my bike is a premium, or I know I will be camping on rock and can’t pitch a tent. I prefer more room though like yourself. Just had a look at the Luna solo, looks like a great 1 person lightweight tent. Great that it’s fully waterproof too

Turn your Army bivvy bag upside down then tie off the protruding cover out on a stick, it gives you a mini tent ! I also sewed a bug net in on a zip..

I didn’t have any when I used it, but I had good airflow being by the sea last time. I think I will modify it though and put a little bit of mes at the foot end and a flap like at the head end for extra airflow though

Thank you for your information and videos on your adventures and gear I would like you ask you a question on gear , I'm looking for a down sleep bag 3 season as I do bikepacking and looking for something that will compress down , alot of people recommend the alpkit 400 pipedream was going to ask what you use and if you can give me a point in the right direction

Thank you. So when I bought my down bag I was contemplating a few as I wanted pack size to be small. I don’t get overly cold on camps so wasn’t looking for a crazy warm bag. It was between the pipedream 400 and vango cobra 400. As the pipedream was almost impossible to get at the time I needed a bag, I got the cobra. If you can get a pipedream, I don’t think there are much better for the money out there, although I just looked and alpinetrek are doing the rab ascent 400 for £150 on sale and that is cheaper than both I mentioned. That’s a great bag but usually way over £200 so it’s a bargain. The biggest game changer for me is to take a mini hot water bottle though, boil water when you make your late night hot drink, then place the hot water bottle in the foot box before you get in. You will sleep better as feet getting cold is typically what wakes people up.

Yeah better than my tent, but it has to be as in contact. Doesn’t breath but then you don’t need it too really as got the mesh. Staying dry is always priority. I will bring this up when we do a little bike camp soon

I'm not sure I could sleep in something this small. I've got the Jack Wolfskin Gossamer 1 and that's got just enough room inside for a bag, but I guess it's a fair bit heavier and not as compact to pack away.
@thebikepackingadventurer

Yes it’s pretty small, great for lighter weight and small bag hiking but no room for anything but sleeping. I stayed in it this weekend, was enough to store my shoes at foot end and all electrical at my head end. I don’t get claustrophobic though so this is better than a normal army bivvy. Certainly warmer than a tent though. I have the Helm1 and this is under half the weight of that

@@thebikepackingadventurer Yes, I'm going to Germany to climb some Via Ferrata's in Bavaria in the first week of August and need a Bivy as opposed to my Tarptent Double Rainbow DW. I have painstakingly looked at every bivy as I am on a tight budget and the only one that ticks all the boxes is the Big Agnes Three Wire, but I cannot fond a single one in stock and it's double the price of the Alpkit Elan. The only thing the Alpkit Elan doesn't have is a full mesh for the door incase you want a large venting option or view (I'll be going with a tarp from BUSHMEN, and it doesn't state the name fo the waterproof membrane they are using (if they are at all) so I worry about condensation. Whats the coldest you've camped in this now? If at all lol
@thebikepackingadventurer

@@TarikVann ah that sounds like an epic trip. Yes cost is always the biggest factor. I only camped in it once, that’s my most recent video. There is good airflow, but I made sure on the side I sleep on and face that I left a couple of inches unzipped to help. It got down to 10 degrees and the video shows I camp a few metres from the sea and can get lots of moisture in the air. I think leaving a small air hole makes a huge difference for condensation as it will all come from your breath
@TarikVann

That's helpful, I'm a side sleeper too and know I breathe out a lot of moisture. The only thing is I'm an Aussie and so leaving any gap means nozzles will get in and you'll wake up with welts on your face. So I hope to pitch it in a way where there is enough ventilation, but I may even being an external bug mesh for when I'm wanting to sit up.

Yes similar for me, although I shuffled down slightly and solved that on my first camp using it. I actually left the zip slightly open and gave amazing breathing and airflow. Just positioned it in to the wind, and left a 2” gap. Worked very well

@@Chris66able ah nice. Yes I was thinking of adding a vent at the foot end. I think the foot end tie out point would work better with 2 now I have used it out and about. That way will hold the toe box up nicer, and would be better for water run off
