I met Cav of Cavalex at a local model railway show where he was exhibiting his N Gauge layout based on Burton in 2019 just before this venture started and that’s the key, these guys are modellers too and they understand what matters to us.

This is the first of your videos Charlie that I've managed to watch in the last few months. I use to watch with my dad but Sadly he passed away end of June and he never got to use the Cavalex 56 which he so wanted to try..:( I cant bring myself to go into the layout room that I helped build for my dad at the moment, but I did promise that I would use the layout and all the stock again and I wouldn't just sell it. As this is something we did together, father and son. I will get back to it one day, even if its way down the line when things get more comfortable. I'll get more and more into the hobby again and start watching you and others as time goes by I'm sure. Cracking content as always, Charlie 👍

Charlie, great review. I must say, your check-list of how to check a new wagon or carriage purchase is great. I have mode notes, and will follow in the future. Thank you for that. I do have to say, that some models have such amazing undercarriage details, that doing the back-to-back check is hard, and I have had to revert to a set of digital callipers on some. I think I noticed that you have done some landscaping near the fueling yard, you will have to give us an update. Thank you for sharing, cheers, and stay safe, Michael

All of my locomotives and rolling stock pre-dates NEM pockets, and I'm in the gradual process of changing everything to magnetic couplers, but I use a similar bit of "test" track to achieve the correct heights. Hi Charlie. An informative video as ever. It's nice to see a review for a change and your approach is honest. I'd not heard of Cavalex, but they're now on my radar. If I might offer a bit of information myself, you did a video a while back about MTB point motors - their MP1 and MP5 models if I remember correctly. As well as there being a MP10 model - the same fixing points as tortoise motors, they've now replaced the MP5 with the MP4, but more interestingly, they now do a DP4 and DP10 as well, the latter two being for DCC control without the need for an interface unit (I assume that you address them from your main control unit). They have the two volt free contacts for switching frog polarity, etc. and from what I can see, the DP4 isn't much dearer than the MP4, so perhaps this is something that you might wish to look in to for both your own benefit and to review for others, as if they are directly addressable, then the cost and installation time savings could be considerable. I hope that I haven't waffled on. Kind regards, Gordon

Thanks Charlie, a really good Video, you mentioned that a Class 60 is being introduced hopefully more reliable than the Prototype, which had a poor service history. Out of interest did you know that in America the BNSF among some other Railway Coys bought large Numbers of the GE Evolution Series ET44 and ES44 Diesels elected to have them as having 2 Traction Motors per Truck rather than 3 Traction Motors (the middle Axle being unpowered) and classified ET44C4 and ES44C4 as they felt it gave the Wheel Sets more bite!

I think its a very close race between the Cav class 56 and the SLW class 25 as being the top tier benchmark model in 00. As a DC only model, the SLW class 25 wins out by a length. DCC sound however, the Cav 56 really is the class act. Cavs wagons go from strength to strength too, the only ones I've had with issues is the HAA hoppers which seem a bit rushed in their assembly, presumably in light of competition from Accurascale. Every single one I have has issues with misaligned couplers whos mounts are glued on the wonk and brake clasps that rub on the wheelsets from being mounted skew-whiff; but are otherwise very good looking. Their BBA is absolutely sublime!

Hi Charlie, Great review, lovely to see some running both at Chadwick and at the Cathedral. They are lovely models, it's hard to imagine that the fine detail on the undercarriage will last. The large tankers looked amazing especially the graffiti applied by your friend. Seems wrong to be appreciating it though!! The packaging looked excellent especially the mounting tray. Not sure I would go for the flat bed trucks my old grey and black dublo ones blend in well, but that's just personal choice. Have a great weekend!! PS: What happened to the man on the viaduct?

If the centre axle of the 56 bogie has some vertical float then it will effectively carry no weight. Your worries about traction are thus unfounded as friction for traction is directly proportional to the contact force that gravity provides.
@ChadwickModelRailway
9 сағат бұрын
Now that’s a comment that is really pricked up my interest, Graham. However, I would’ve thought that 12 wheels would deliver more tractive effort than 8, but it could be just reducing the likely of slippage. I am very much scratching my head on the physics of this. Regards, Charlie.

An interesting video thanks Charlie. Its good to see what's on offer these days, and as your review reveals, these models are quite superb. However (and sadly), my Railway at Pevenbourne will never see the likes of these. For a start, I've already got far too many models (as my wife frequently reminds me !). Then there's the price ! While I do get why these models cost what they do, I'm sorry but I'm just NOT paying £200-£300 for a loco, £40 or so for a wagon and about £60 for a coach. To me these models, however good they are, are just not worth these eye-watering prices. I'll only make an exception if we eventually see a prototype Class 252 HST or LEV1/LEV2 as they are trains that are of particular interest for me. In the long run, I'm retired so have a much reduced disposable income and I need to focus on completing my planned railway to run the trains that I already have. I do need additional rolling stock such as coaches and wagons to run behind some of my locos, but these will be second hand ones. Rant over Charlie ! Thanks for the video, its the only way I'll be seeing these sort of models !

Hi Bryan, I totally agree with your pricing views . It hardly attracts young enthusiasts into our hobby. However, choices are what they are, and hopefully you get what you pay for. It will be great when these items do trickle down into the secondhand market. Regards, Charlie.

I'm surprised things like the issue with the HAA wheel arch doesn't happen more often (maybe it does and I didn't know) because of 16.5mm gauge being too narrow for 4mm/foot modelling - which makes the wheel encroach on the body

Hi Charlie. A very nice review video, plenty of information for potential Cavalex buyers. I’ve seen Cavalex several times at Model Rail Scotland show and their models look superb. However, I model Era 5 and all the Cavalex stuff seems much newer. Perhaps they have made a conscious business decision to focus on era 7 and newer? So, I’d love to buy their stuff but I can’t. A bit of a comparison with your Accurascale models would have been nice. I see these 2 manufacturers as very much head-to-head competitors. Finally, did Cavalex give you the models to try (other than those loaned by your friends) are they on loan? (Just curious, as often reviews start with a disclaimer to confirm no incentives were given etc). Really enjoyed this video though and wait hopefully for Cavalex to focus on early 1960’s era. All the best Charlie.

An excellent comment, William, thank you. There is normally a disclaimer at the start of a video, whereas the KZitemr has been paid for this promotion. Rest assured, that is not the case here. Financially, there is nothing in it for me. Cavalex did lend me one of the Class 56 Locos and the 17 BBA wagons. These will be returned at GETS. I’m always suspicious of reviews when the KZitemr accepts payment! Stay safe, regards Charlie.
