My brother and I played against each other on this in early 90’s, many times. We found it quite easy to understand once you had done a couple of phases. This was definitely one of my all time favorite games.

This was one of my favorite games as I loved Dragonlance and War simulators. And yes, it is a VERY difficult game. I did beat it several times though, but only after playing it time and time again and getting some good luck with country alliances. I liked this game so much, I actually made my own physical board game out of it! Fav part was actually killing a dragon in battle! Thanks for bringing back some fine memories.

Highly enjoyable to watch reviews of old and (mostly) forgotten games :) I think it might take a little more effort to get into this than just to boot it up and expect to win it, since as you mention there are some mechanics that are vital yet might be completely new to the player. Though I guess it helps to know the Dragonlance world a little bit (and how the War of the Lance was played out, as it affect the Highlord movements). If you ever replay it, here are 2 suggestions: Make sure you don't lose Silvanesti, that is the real tactical game changer. This should not be a real problem unless you put Highlord on very high strength and yourself on low. Just ship basically every Solamnia unit over there and defend it until they give up and move on. And about the naming of the savefiles. You are supposed to use the same letter for an entire campaign :)

Thanks for the review, you did a good job of telling why not everybody would like this game but it is cool to play a strategy game set in the dragonlance world.

About a year old on this review now, and you're highly likely the last person to have played this game. I always enjoy your indepth reviews, Darrell. You pick the most complicated, difficult games. I love hearing about them every time. Even if I'd never play them.

Thank you for demystifying this game, which I could never get into. By the way, massive microphone quality upgrade. Nice work!

Secret to winning this game is using fleets and griffons to fight delaying actions and block enemey movement using retreat to do delaying actions. You can surround sylvanesti with, so that the dragons can't surround you and attack the capital. you can also block entry to invading armies. this can delay or even prevent capture of the capital.

I enjoyed this game a lot on the Commodore 64, even though I recall my friends hating it. You aren't kidding about the difficulty being through the roof though. They were aiming for a real simulation of the War of the Lance as it played out in the books, and of course in the books, Whitestone is all but doomed. My biggest complaint about the game is the diplomacy system. How well you do really comes down to how fast you can get countries to ally with you, which is essentially just an unfavorable dice roll every single time. If you get lucky rolls early on, you have a chance. If you don't, you pretty much wasted an hour of setup time and have no hope of victory. I know you can tweak this difficultly but setting it to the most favorable number always feels like cheating. The game really does lamp-shade some of the outright mistakes they made in the books. For example, the Dragon Army going out of it's way to capture Tarsus in the second novel is ridiculous, as it clearly has no strategic value what so ever. The decision to attack Silvenesti first, instead of marching straight for Solamnia and steam rolling the Knight countries, is also pretty questionable, since the elves never would have gotten involved in the war if they thought they were going to be left alone. Also, why the heck was the entire White Dragonarmy stationed at Icewall!? All I'm saying is, if I were the Highlord, I'd have hit Solamnia with all my dragons on month one, before they had any time for all the diplomatic gymnastics. Boom, victory, done.

Loved the review, as I tend to do. It looks so familiar to me... Wondering if it could be a reuse of an older SSI engine, not sure. Sure looks like it's straight out of one of their mid 80's war games. I do love how they ventured off into all these different areas for the TSR stuff. I think both TSR and SSI got their moneys worth out of that deal. Made me curious on if the Amiga version was any better, but they didn't even release on the Amiga... Guess it's because this was one of their lowest selling games. Well, makes me curious on the C64 version then, since nothing for the Amiga. Thanks for showing it off, as always! - And yes... that armor... very creepy... lol

Thank you Shot97! Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, the "country status" screen actually looks a lot like the "credits" screen in many of the Goldbox series games. I think they definitely reused parts of the code since some of the GB games came before this one.

Really like your reviews and choice of games, but might I suggest speaking with shorter pauses? It'd really add dynamism to your videos, I find myself turning the speed to 1.25x, something I never do. Adding some emphasis could also help the videos sound more natural and less like you're reading a script or doing a power point presentation, but speaking with less pauses would already alleviate that a bunch.

Honestly, the game would have been way easier to understand if they had stuck to the rules from the physical version of this game. Yes, there was a hex map and cardboard chit version of this that was a lot less complicated.
