Lovely whistle with amazing sound as you effortlessly fly through the registers. I'll have to acquire one, as I was looking to upgrade. I've been playing the one I made for myself of copper that plays great, but is a little heavier perhaps than many. But that seems to give a more stable register balance. I have looked at a lot of clips of current brands, and I think I'm sold on this whistle. Thank you for your review and exalent playing.

This is certainly one of my favorite sounding whistles but I’m not sure if it’s just this beasts playing of it that makes it sound so good. I like the sound of this and the Lir whistle. If I ever get a good whistle it would be Wild, Lir, or Killarney. Really hard after looking at those so long to choose between. Also heard some people like Humphrey and Syn but I think the syns coolest selling point is the interchangeable bores. I still think I prefer the sound of the above 3 from what I’ve heard.

That was wonderfull to hear again. I have found your suggestion helpful on how to get the C natural by just dropping the F finger a bit. Very helpful, thank you! I live in Lahardaun Mayo, just down the road a bitten to Castlebar. I enjoyed hearing the Castlebar Traveler. I never heard that one before. Where could I get the sheet music for it. I read music. I don't play looking at finger positions. In fact I think it a BIG disservice to the students in school, including my own, teaching them only learning the fingering chart. They really should be taught to learn to read music, to look at the notes and know the fingering. They should learn and know how to read they music notation. And when a song asks for a C natural instead of C#. They know how to read the music and what's an accidental is and all the different keys! Then they could know how to transpose. I also play trympet. More classical style and some Jazz. One has to do a lot of transposing. Reading music is not hard. And just teaching finger tabliture is a big mistake. The students of all other instruments learn it step by step, note by note. Why is the Feadóg Stáin different. They become very limited if the grow up not know how to read music. They most often drop the instrument. If a person could go on playing and learning new song by reading the music; then I think there is more of a chance they will continue playing as an adult. There is a famous youtube whistle player. She plays lovely and tin whistle makers send her all kinds of wonderful whistles to try out and give an oppinion. But if you listen to some of the songs she plays, for example "Moon River", she is playing by reading the fingering. She does not see a timing signiture or the length of the notes. She does not know an eight note from sixteenth or whole notes. So she gueses the the length to hold a note. She plays by memory of a song and follows the fingering. She ends up playing her own version of the song, simply because she cannot read music at all. She knows the bottom hole is a D. She knows what notes are for her fingers. But cannot read it on a music staff. I wrote back and fourth with her about that. And told me she cannot read music. Just think how good she could be if she did. I do think the Irish schools should change their method of teaching tin whistle. Well I know that is how all five of our children learned. The unwanted result I have seen is, it causes kids to be frightened and intimidated by music. The actual music staff and notation frightens them and they automatically think it will be too hard. I have met so many musicians, like guitarist and whistlers cannot and will not wven try and learn to read music. The guitarist use guitar tabs and whistlers (who play well) end up just playing by ear. But if you ask the guitarists what key they are in, they may answering?: A capo 2! Now how will that help my hubby violinists or me on my trumpet who needs to transpose. Or me with my whistle. I don't have all the keys yet. I don't have low E or Eb, Alto F#, Ab, I am sorry for my rant and ramblimg. He h! I just thought what would be good. A great book or course or App that would simply teach people how to read music when playing a whistle! Again, I'm so sorry for the very long message and rant.6 I enjoy your playing. I would love to have your CDs or an albums? God bless you! And I hope your music does very well ideed!

I play with Dixon whistles in several keys, accept low D. My fingers are too short. But I don't have a good D whistle that sounds so clear as your McNeela.. I think I'll go for one of these Ds. How much do they go for here in Ireland? I have a few D whistles, but clearest nicest sound is my Clarke. But it has one BIG problem that keeps me from playing it with others, it is not in pitch and I can't adjust it. Oh well. Great musicianship! God bless you!

I can read music. It helps very little. The tinwhistle in particular is almost all people making slight variations on songs with different ornaments anyway. Knowing how a song goes and matching it is just as effective and an easier point of entry for students. Students that care can learn music theory if they wanna delve into it. Learning to keep time, music notes and their lengths while keeping time and remembering fingerings at once will overwhelm most students and people learning so I think learning the tabs first and then adding more is best. Tabs Learn to read while still learning tabs have both available Remove tabs and try to learn some songs with classic notation. You want it to be interesting and fun so they wanna learn more before you try to teach them something that doesn’t naturally make sense with the brain. 🧠 what makes sense is note distance and matching a timing. Then learning to read.
