Guitar and strings sound amazing. It has an extremely low noise floor. It does get a bit hot at times so ensure it has good ventilation around it. Good quality power cord made quite a bit of positive difference. Everything I mention above got a lot better. I had a tacima power conditioner and then upgraded to the Audioquest Niagara 1200. I'm pairing this amp (Hong Kong version) with the Harbeth SHL5+ 40th and I couldn't be happier. This amp replaced the Rogue Sphinx V1 which was not bad at all, no complaints, but probably because the Kinki is a sort of dual mono design with twice the power, everything just sounds effortless and more detailed. Even ”corrected” the LR balance issue which I previously thought was caused by the room. I can't say the mids are any weaker or thinner than before, not in my set up at least.

Unfortunately after sales service at Kinki Studio leaves a lot to be desired. My EX-M1+ amp, only a few months old, developed nasty distortion on every channel. All Kinki has done is to blame it on my cables. I have checked my cables on two other systems and they are in perfect condition. Kinki refuses to swap out the amp. For that reason I have to recommend you avoid Kinki Studio products at least for now.

Sean, nice review. BTW, I had a chance to spend quite a bit of time with the Yamaha A-S2100 integrated amp. It is really an interesting unit. Music from it has the same black background and extraction of detail you describe in this review. It is also wonderfully smooth and easy to listen to, which I attribute to its MOSFET output stage. It is also beautifully built with polished wood side panels and VU meters on the front. However, in my system it had one glaring flaw that for me was a deal-killer. It is just under-powered. It offers only 90W per channel and I don't know how much current. The result was that music, while sounding qualitatively excellent (tone, detail, warmth, musicality, etc.), quantitatively was just a little lifeless. It sounded really good with Diana Krall, but when I put on Heart it was relatively staid. Not enough punch and dynamics. In short, it lacks balls. Too bad. I liked so much else about it.

No Audiolab, arcam, Cambridge, amps are good enough for serious audiophiles like me, who crave, clarity, detail resolution, and speed from their amplifiers abilities. Not even cyrus or naim either. I live in the UK too, and I value clarity, speed, and detail resolution, and none of those brands can match my two biamped 1995 avi s2000mi integrated amplifiers for that such very reason. I have listened to every single one of our UK brands amplifiers. Not even any of the new uk amps also, can compete. My two avi s2000mi integrated amplifiers biamped, can power atc scm150's no problem. One amp for mid and treble, and the second amp for the bass. These amps were designed also using the atc scm100 and scm150 3 way monitors as the reference loudspeakers. So you get my view I hope, from this perspective. My two amplifiers biamped together, have a total of 350 Watts into 4 ohms, and can output 750 Watts into 2 ohms between the two of them. Not even the mighty naim nap 300 and 500 can compete either. If you Look up the prices of those two particular naim amplifiers, they are pretty expensive bits of kit, and no way in my book are they worth their respective prices. As regards clarity, detail resolution, and speed, my two amps biamped, show those two naim amps a clean pair of heels and show them the door.

I had the Kinki, it had so many problems: audible hum from the amp (not speakers) at a couple of meters away, way too high gain (even with low gain setting) for 87db speakers (i.e. on louder mastered CDs at night, when I listen more quietly, I wanted to lower the volume even when it was on Vol.1 so not possible). Volume Tracking when turning the volume knob was not linear - it would sometimes click down a volume notch when turning it up! Basically, if you're thinking of Kinki definitely don't buy it blind like I did. Vinshine refused to accept that any of these issues were a fault, but thankfully I managed to swap it for another brand of amp with the UK importer which works perfectly!

Ok, I'll spare the jokes in this one. Seriously though, this appears to be a nice piece. While I am not that crazy about the looks, there is still an appeal to it for me. The build is what I like about this unit, super solid! Sean, I'm glad you did a compare between the Parasound Hint 6 and the Kinki EX-EM1+. I was hoping you would! I agree with what you said about their strengths and weaknesses comparatively. I was thinking that while watching the review of the Kinki. I do think thought that Parasound would still dominate slightly if the comparison was the P6/A23+ or 21+ separates to the Kinki, but then again, that would not have been a fair comparison. I'm glad I am not in the market for an integrated, otherwise judging by sound description I would have maybe had a hard time deciding between the two. Although, while I do like detailed and balanced sound (I want to hear everything in a recording), I would not call myself a purest because I am not afraid of tone controls/EQ, I'd much rather have them than not, even though I rarely ever use them. I also like to have basic features such as an easy way to select source inputs and such rather than click or dial through a knob in a menu. Yeah, ok, I appreciate remotes too.

By some atc scm40 v2 or scm 50's, and add 2 kinki integrated's one amp for mid and treble, and the second amp for the bass. Atc scm 3 way monitors need amplifiers with speed, detail , clarity, and control, for them to be emotionally involving and inviting, and exiting.

I get the appeal of "Chi-Fi" when it comes to affordable tube amps. But at $3K for a class AB integrated, it seems to me there are too many great options from long-standing, reputable brands to take a gamble on the Kinki. If this amp competed with the likes of Nagra, Gryphon or Accuphase, then it'd make for a good value proposition but I gather it's not on that level.

Nice review. I owned the non “plus” version amp for a month or so, and sold it in favour of the Schiit Freya and Vidar. I wrote a review comparing the Kinki to the Schiit Duo over on SBAF. My thoughts pretty much perfectly line up with yours. Like you say, thin mids and speed is not for everyone or every set of speakers - it wasn’t for me/mine.

Thanks Rick. I haven't heard the Freya/Vidar combo. Only the Vidar in a different rig. I'd imagine that it sounds warmer, slower, far less refined yet nonetheless very enjoyable! Glad you found your huckleberry! And yep, the EXM1+ has the kinda sound that is stunning in many ways, but it won't be for everyone and careful equipment matching will be the key to getting the most ideal performance outta it.

Zero Fidelity to me the Kinki put its flavour on every recording and didn’t sound natural. Detailed and fast and inky black, yes. But a bit too fast and dry. A great amp IMO should morph with the recording and let the recording/production and the source dictate the overall feeling of the track. To me the Kinki added a fast/dry signature to everything.

Minimalism is great but the face of that unit looks very DIY. The face looks quite "scrap metalish" and the knobs, home made. No doubt it's a brilliant musical piece... personally the appearance doesn't match up to it's internal calibre.

It looks like Atoll has finally begun to catch the eyes of more audio enthusiasts. It's about time! Kinki on the other hand, has a long road to travel. There are a number of obstacles standing in their way. First, the brand name itself is off-putting to a lot of people. Secondly, they've got to fight against the overwhelmingly negative reception of hi-fi products that come from China. Particularly gear that costs more than a Happy Meal. The product seems to be fairly solid, and their global distributor is one of the more pleasant people that I've dealt with. Here's to hoping they find success!

Those atoll heatsinks on the inside of the amplifier, are only just large enough for say an amplifier that would be operated at only a very low few watts just in a class A input stage alone, if it was an input stage on a normal class A operated amplifier, and that's not even taking into account large heatsinks needed for an output stage.. I definitely would not be happy with an integrated amplifier with heatsinks that small for a so called 120 watt amplifier. Those inside heatsinks are a bit of joke for a 120 watt amplifier, especially with the size of those transformers on the inside, the heatsinks are a pure joke. You should not have skipped on your amplifier just because of a headphone output, you should have bought a seperate headphone amplifier for the headphone job, and a proper amplifier for powering loudspeakers. That intoll IN200 should be called the zero fidelity amplifier, HAHA. Probably its just good enough for some headphones, but transformers that large for a headphone out, is a hum magnet for a headphone output in my book, they should be shielded for a start, and the amp needs to be shielded from mains pollution for a delicate dedicated headphone amp. Look at the size of the the heatsinks of an atc p1 150 watt class ab power amplifier, and then tell me everything is alright with the atoll IN200 as an amplifier to properly power good decent loudspeakers. Why do people buy loudspeakers and other products, just because of some reviews, I will never understand, because the buchardt loudspeakers are very poor in sound quality, and if you think they sound good and real, then you haven't heard some proper loudspeakers I'm afraid. Good music is falling on deaf ears, with most people buying because of some overated review related product, just like the kef ls50, which is another bad and overated loudspeaker also, reviewers say they are the best thing since sliced bread, they are most certainly and definitely not the best sounding loudspeakers since sliced bread at all, no where near at all, not even for a standmount loudspeaker full stop.

Hi Zero. Nice review. I would like to see more info about the device in these reviews, other than the subjective appraisal. It's class AB right? Stepped resistor ladder volume via some IC? I like the look and concept of the amp, but I'm concerned with the ladder resistor stepped volume. What is the dB step? And how many? There's another comment further down said too loud for late night listening on 001 even with the low gain setting. I'm not too keen on stepped volumes at all, what was your exeperience?

They also exposed the gold heat sinks, however everything else with maybe the upper harmonics The reviewer said he found it extended yet natural no simblance nothing strident. He overall found it supremely holographic and all the tight fast bass. He did find the Mids excellent with no mention of a dip having paired it with every speaker he owns. See New Record Day.
