Bought it. Thank you, Hurwitz. My wife’s reached the end of her tether, mind, with my cd purchasing. Have hidden it behind the cat litter. She never goes there.

Great review. I'm delighted to have this set for giving us his Sibelius in one place, yes, but also for the opportunity to hear him conduct other composers' works. Thanks, Warner. A keeper.

Hello Dave! Fabulous presentation (as always) Thanks for the 'heads up' on this mega-box. I very rarely go for big boxes, as I would have too many duplications. However, I have very little Berglund in my collection, but I really love that which I have, so this collection is a 'must' for me. A belated self-birthday pressent!

You naughty person. Tempted by your review of the Sibelius alone! Best wishes from George in Herefordshire.

I have the Icon box but just had to get this current one too on account of it having all three Sibelius cycles, as well as the original cover designs on the sleeves (I know...!). Just two of so many highlights for me would be the Bournemouth "Kullervo" - what a spectacular achievement they managed in bringing this music to a wider audience through this first recording of the piece - and Bliss' "Miracle in The Gorbals", in which they convince us that this is one of the great 20th century ballet scores, or so it seems to me - just listen to how together the orchestra plays, especially the string section. It is thrilling that this set has been made available to us by Warner. A standout release of 2024, I would say!

Have already bought the very good Berglund Icon box, and now this comes out? How many more ways to the poorhouse? Now, you've gotten me really tempted!

A lovely video. Thanks, David. I have a very high opinion of Berglund too and have many of the recordings in that box. However, I have to confess I wasn't aware of the symphony cycle with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe.

I attended many Berglund concerts in Newcastle in the 70s. He was a wonderful and underestimated conductor. He is always worth revisiting…..

Thanks for this Dave - I purchased the set as soon as it came out as I remember buying a lot of it when it came out on LP - some of which I still retain. A lot has never been reissued on CD. Yes it is for the collector - but so is this channel….

Thanks for doing this; it's a tough choice, since shelf-space is limited. But the good stuff is SO good (I missed getting the Shostakovich 6th when it was commonly available; do I buy the entire box now?). But it's good to hear your assessment of everything. (No dead spots in the Franck D minor?..this I MUST hear!) Also, I turned away for a moment near the beginning, looked back and thought Warner had slipped an Arthur Fiedler disc into the box....until I realized the cover photo onscreen was Arthur BLISS. Pretty weird. LR

When will these companies actually get the boxes right. Looking at the Discogs entry, it appears that Berglund’s last Tapiola from Helsinki is missing. It was on Finlandia and was released again with Ormandy’s Lemminkäinen Suite.

Finally they released a comprehensive Berglund box! I was looking forward to this release from quite some time. Even though I already have some of this stuff, I immediately ordered it, there are some amazing gems inside - his Shostakovich, Vaughan Williams, of course all three of his Sibelius cycles and so much more! By the way Warner also just released a big box of Neville Marriner, a conductor, with whom I am not very familiar, so I was wondering if you are going to cover the set and what is your opinion on Marriner and the individual performances. On a side note isn't it wonderful what Warner does with its legacy! They release all of these great boxes, reissue them from time to time and generally keep them in print for quite more then most other major labels, especially DECCA and RCA (to be fair Sony and DG also do a decent job, but they rarely reissue stuff and don't keep most things in print for as long as Warner). Anyway, thanks so much for the video, it was very interesting to hear your thoughts on the Berglund box!

I have the Icon box and the Sibelius symphonies separately, so most of these performances. Are these all remastered and is it worth buying for the remastering and the missing pieces?

Stick with what you have unless you want the missing stuff.

I've already bought that box, and, amazing as it is, it is not really complete (as usual) as the Helsinki Tapiola has not been included (a fantastic performance, IMHO, in surprisingly less than 15 minutes!)

I know, these things never are quite right. I get tired of pointing that out. It's complete enough.

I noticed that omission as well. I can almost understand how they missed it, since (at least from what I've seen) the recording wasn't released as part of the original albums, but was first released in the second of the two disc sets of the Helsinki cycle. Mild frustration, yes, but still a great box.

@@timothymoore883 , I also think that's the reason. It was also included in the complete Helsinki Sibelius cycle released a few years ago, which I have. It's a quite cheap way to complete the collection, but of course with lots of repetition.

Also missing is a Berglund Sibelius 4th with the Finnish Radio Symphony released on Finlandia (now part of Warner). That might have earned a dubious distinction as including the most (4) duplicated works in a single megabox. Have there any others with 4 or more??

The Helsinki Tapiola was released many years after its recording (1994) as the last track on a Ormandy Kalevala Legends disc that’s in one of those oddball series that classical labels loved to throw out there.

A very rare edit/jump cut from Dave. You eliminated the background hum. I guess you went to turn off the heating unit or something. I only noticed because I was listening rather than watching while doing something else. It reminds me of how incredible it is that you do most of these like Fred Astaire did his perfect routines, without cuts.

Ida Haendel comissioned Allan Pettersson to write her a violin concerto, well be careful what you wish for, it's a full fifty minutes of maximum intensity. OOP I'm afraid.
